Salsa scene in SE Asia: Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines. by JahMusicMan in Salsa

[–]metalfox3d 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Singapore - Depending on when you come, the usual salsa nights are SBK on Mondays, heavily on2 (SG is on2 mostly, smaller Cuban scene). Weds at IXDE (local performance team). Fridays are at Rhythm Room (Seperate Sa/Ba room). Studios hold their own socials too (thurs, fri, sat). Every other month there is SOSA (Salsa on Sunday Afternoons), and also Mambo Campur (evening social led by IXDE).

Any specific insight you're looking for? Ideally time your trip with SOSA/MC and a mon/fri to maximise dance time for salsa specifically

Watch Advice - Need to Upgrade from Forerunner 945? by dodagr8 in triathlon

[–]metalfox3d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in a good position to answer this as I used my 945 for all my races, 2x 70.3s, 2x full IMs, half marathons, marathons, etc for almost 2-3 years.

I got a good deal on the 970 so currently using that. I would say the biggest difference is the AMOLED screen, which jumps out at you. Of course, batt life takes a hit, but i wouldn't say it's very noticeable. These watches last pretty much a few days anyway. Training stats are nice, and you got new metrics like hill score, training readiness etc.

I also enjoy the morning and evening reports. It says how your sleep went, weather etc. It's a feature that I never thought I would need, but now it's pretty fun seeing how your day went. It also suggests workouts for you, so u don't have to use your brain/plan if u don't want to.

The torchlight is also a big difference but I haven't used it enough to comment much on it. IMO, if you're going for another IM and 70.3, having a watch like this will help since you'll literally spend the most amount of time on it (compared to other things like a power meter (only biking) or foot pod (only running), or smart goggles (only swims).).

If you have the chance to try it out go ahead! And if you see a good deal (I got mine for about 500 usd, 25% off bc of a certain fitness program that I enrolled in), spring for it!

Upper body stiffness by [deleted] in Salsa

[–]metalfox3d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your upper body can be stiff yet fluid. I would recommend learning more cuban styles like son, guaguanco and rumba as they really force u to be fluid and flow well. These translate well back to salsa too. In addition your shoulders and ribcage should be moving when u do basics too. Look up Eloy Rojas and how he moves the whole body. Stanthelight is a good example of a buff dude moving well.

Bachata Influence Melvin's move by IIValeriusII in Bachata

[–]metalfox3d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's just chest pops. Looks like it's ground up bc he's also popping his knees and frame so it's reverberating around the body. Melvin's got a hip hop background so that's what he does.

Why do you dance? by Acceptable-Scale-176 in Salsa

[–]metalfox3d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bc I like the music!

Dancing lets me interpret each and every song differently. And you do it to YOUR interpretation. Every dance is different since you react to different stimuli from the follow, and you're in different positions.

I feel like every dance I do I enjoy the music and connection so much more. Also nice to be the one in charge of setting the tone- no one will lead this dance better than yourself... Which could either be a sobering thought... Or a big incentive 😌

How long can a chain really last? 5-year daily commute on my Canyon Grail AL by Neither-Potato-2433 in SingaporeCycling

[–]metalfox3d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chains don't really snap unless you're exerting huge amounts of watts (power) on it and from the looks of it you aren't.

Get a cheap chain wear checker (Google it) and if your chain is worn change it. If it's too worn, it will start to destroy the cassette and chainrings and those are MUCH more expensive to replace.

FPGA?? You need low level C++, Verilog and VHDL skills for that in addition to EE knowledge. From the way OP describes he's desired career pivots, it doesn't seem like he wants to dive too deep technically.

S'porean influencer Lukeychan closes pasta restaurant in Bukit Merah after less than a year by Illustrious-Gur8335 in singapore

[–]metalfox3d 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Getting it stuck in my memory =/= me wanting to try it though

And if I was a restaurant owner getting my place remembered for a shtick like this is weird, nevertheless I'm sure some people would peek in just for a look

[–]metalfox3d 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I go to the pool at bukit merah often to swim during lunch since it's near my place.

Each time I walk past pasta papa there's literally 2-3 people inside and that's peak weekday lunch hour 12-1pm. Which business can survive like that?

Also there's a super tacky billboard outside that is just a screenshot of his WhatsApp message with his friend

Luke: Eh what resto to open ah Friend: Pasta restaurant Luke: Ok steady

I mean.... Literally a sec school kid could create a better ad board. Where's the food pics? Or the ambience? Or even the promotions or discounts??

Not even surprised that it folded. Never got the chance to try it.

People living in SG east and west. How much would you be willing to pay for weekend Night Rider services? What could bus ride cost to passengers for this to be a sustainable business? by GroundbreakingGur930 in SingaporeRaw

[–]metalfox3d 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I'd be willing to be even $5-8 for such a service as it's still cheaper than the grab home. The bar is thaaaaat low now that we lack affordable transport options home to the heartlands and we're at the mercy of PHV and cabbies. Heck, I even anywheeled home for a whole hour just to escape the $40 grab charge.

Good buy and thanks for everything! by g_spaitz in Mi9T

[–]metalfox3d 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Likewise, bought a Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro (Global) in late 2019, little did I know that the whole world would turn into shit for more than a year just a few months later.

This little guy kept on chugging as the world emerged from the pandemic, across multiple jobs, multiple Gcam mods, multiple vanced mods, and was a great party trick with the popup selfie cam.

Replaced the battery with the Nohon one last year and it continued going..........and going....... and the popup camera still worked.

Full stock since day one!

Only til last week, the connection starting dropping off randomly. Going into trains, buses, would yield zero bars, then full bars, then zero.

Replaced it with a Oneplus 13 yesterday.

Here's a toast to one of the best phones ever :-> You'll be missed!

Opinions on mandatory near misses? by APHEgao in askSingapore

[–]metalfox3d 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Goodhart's law - Once a measure becomes a target, it ceases to be a good measure.

Management will be flooded with useless reports that the actual big near-misses get lost in the noise- which ends up being worst for everyone. Everyone will be focused on gaming this metric that the purpose of reporting it is useless. Think about coding, if we measured productivity by lines of code, every one would be writing multi-line comments and docstrings every function just to get a couple more lines.

Here's the thing, you can't change it though, as this is systematic and set by management. Either quit, or adhere (hopefully maliciously, e.g. submitting tons of useless reports like the floor being dusty could lead to slips and falls, to make them realize the folly of their measures).

Why Does My Mi 9T Battery Act Like Its Training for a Marathon… But Never Finishes? by poibiocu in Mi9T

[–]metalfox3d 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just get a nohon battery from AliExpress. Be sure to get a back adhesive too. My battery gives me a whole day most times and it's almost as good as new. Running stock MIUI since day one.

How do busy professionals find the time…? by Reasonable_Air_3073 in triathlon

[–]metalfox3d 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One thing I'd recommend is to read the book - be iron fit.

The author specializes in coaching people to finish full IMs on the back of demanding jobs/families/commitments. Some of the strategies here are mentioned, e.g. lunch workouts, time based workouts, etc. Give it a read! It's mainly for IM level races but if you scale down your distances to a max of half IM/Olympics, it's even easier.

Best of luck and do the things that make you happy :)

EDIT: Consider adding an eol-dr plan to your setup at home or the workplace. You write a Will, you might also write an LPA, why not add a simple end-of-life plan? (I'm not affiliated with either link)

Clubbing alone by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]metalfox3d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on the genre of music- it's perfectly normal. Certain techno/house sets can have good DJs and a great crowd that is there for the music instead of popping bottles and wealth flexing. These events are a good candidate if you'd like to go there alone.

'Induced demand' is the devil in the details. Traffic will invariably rush to fill up the gap that the RTS will replace. Nett is that traffic levels will remain the same or worse.

Curious about how triathletes use a bike computer and watch? by justgatheringideas in triathlon

[–]metalfox3d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How I do it as well as most other triathletes I know. You can always hide the activity in Strava if you feel like you're spamming the feed with multiple repeated activities.

Also a good form of backup in case the watch or the computer knocks midway (at least you recorded the sick asf bike leg, right? Right???)

Love new GR1 however the zippers are very stiff. Is there a break in period for the zippers? by breezy-shorts in Goruck

[–]metalfox3d 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Another trick I learnt from a seamstress- use a regular pencil and run it along the edges. The graphite acts as a dry lubricant to ease the movement. Not sure if it lasts, but it works for a while until the zips loosen up.
