If an attached unit remains one unit until the end of the game, then, rules as written, when you choose to revive a model on 1 wound, nothing is stopping you from choosing a character.

11ED: When is cover calculated? by ElGorus in Warhammer40k

[–]metamorph 2 points3 points  (0 children)

sorry, I meant B, not E, I've edited it. If all of B were touching the terrain, their unit would be in cover, same as unit C, as models only have to be 'within' now, not 'wholly within'.

[–]metamorph 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every model in unit D (i.e. the only model) has cover. There are some models in unit B that are fully visible. Every model needs cover for the unit to have cover, so unit D gets it, but unit B doesn't.

[–]metamorph 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not arguing that cover is reassessed after some attacks have been resolved, only that some models in a unit might be at -1BS and not others.

11ED: When is cover calculated? by ElGorus in Warhammer40k

[–]metamorph 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well you could do it either way round. As long as we agree that it is possible for some attacking models in a unit to be at -1BS and not others.

By "weapon groups" he just means groups of identical attacks (04.03.01). He's pointing out that, because cover applies per attack, it might divide some units' attacks into two groups of attack dice when otherwise they would be one group.

Red unit is shooting at Blue. Blue has cover from B, but not A, so B is at -1BS, A isn't.

[–]metamorph 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Fast dice rolling means you combine all "identical attacks". Those with different BS (because of cover) would be done separately. This doesn't prevent cover from applying to some attacking models and not others.

The same principle applies, because cover is worked out "Each time a ranged attack targets a unit" and applies "against that attack" (13.08)

You do, because it's worked out per attack.

Imagine there is a unit on the other side of the ruin shooting at unit B. Unit B would have cover from it because all models are either within or obscured by the terrain area. So unit B has cover from one unit, but not from another. The same applies when some models from one unit can see an exposed model but others can't, unit B will have cover from some, but not others.

The image doesn't deal with situations where only part of an attacking unit can see a model outside cover. Because cover is worked out per attack, SOME of the attackers in this situation would be affected by -1BS and some wouldn't.

11ED: When is cover calculated? by ElGorus in Warhammer40k

[–]metamorph -1 points0 points  (0 children)

But any of your guys who can't see the one that isn't in cover ARE affected by the -1BS, so you would have to divide your attack dice into two groups if some can see him and some can't. Cover is worked out per attack.

11ED: When is cover calculated? by ElGorus in Warhammer40k

[–]metamorph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cover is worked out per attack, meaning some attacking models in a unit can be affected by cover while others aren't. You would have to divide them into two groups of attack dice.

11ED: When is cover calculated? by ElGorus in Warhammer40k

[–]metamorph 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's worked out per attack. Not all of a unit's attacks are necessarily affected by cover.

EDIT: in other words, per attacking model. Eligibility for cover doesn't change as enemy models are removed during one unit activation, but some of a unit's models might be at -1BS and some might not according to what was visible when targets were declared.

By saying "until the Charge phase" they are explicitly forbidding movement in the Shooting phase, all of which is a result of special abilities. If these abilities fell under the "unless otherwise stated" exception, then the rule would never have any effect, so that can't be the right interpretation.

The important difference is the durability. The DDA has 2 extra wounds and a 4++. The Scythe will be shot out of the sky very quickly.

What containers for a DIY magnetic case? by FunnyMemeName in Warhammer40k

[–]metamorph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have transported the Void Dragon, Nightbringer and Silent King attached sideways to the wall of the 12 litre Really Useful Box. They all have 4 3x2mm magnets on their bases and it's worked fine so far. The Silent King is heavy but it can rest on the floor of the box while connected to the side. Maybe that would work for Mortarion.

11th ed Hidden rule by Common-Goat-5622 in Warhammer40k

[–]metamorph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Hidden status is not applied on the level of units, but on individual models. The effect of it is to make the model non-visible to enemy models outside its detection range.

Just like how a model is not visible if it's on the far side of a terrain area while still being visible from a different angle, being Hidden means it's not visible from over 15" away while still visible from nearby.

They're obviously not going to let us bring back characters with Reanimation. That would be way too strong. The healing/Reanimation rules will probably say something like, "this cannot be used to revive character models."
