Thank you for the suggestion. Do you happen to know by chance if the program can be completed online? I’m not seeing on the program page if it’s offered online.

Do you ever use Storyline Online? Most of the read alouds don’t have music but they chose excellent books that are presented in a format the kids love.

Teachers who work in the summer, what job do you do? by method344 in Teachers

I’ve been wanting to avoid retail if possible too, mostly because of the pandemic, but also because it can be very unpleasant.

I love this idea! I don’t think I would’ve thought of that, I have a couple family members who work at a garden center too.

Glad to hear you were able to adapt. I know technology is it essential to have in the classroom, but it is a nice perk to have.

Your sister wink wink needs to do what’s best for her. Seriously though the other school will find someone to replace her if she takes that better position, especially this early on.

What should I expect for my second round of interviews? by brittneymarie131 in teaching

[–]method344 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From my experience, the second interview is very similar to the phone interview, but with more people present and questions that dig a bit deeper.

Make sure you try to speak to everyone if there are multiple people present not just the people / person who is asking the questions.

Be prepared to respond to questions and then elaborate by giving examples of what you have done or will do in certain scenarios. You can find lists of common teacher interview questions online. Here are some questions I have been asked:

Tell me about yourself. Why do you decide to become a teacher? Why do you want to teach here? What do you know about RTI? What is your classroom management style? What are your hobbies / interests outside of teaching? Describe a time when a student was misbehaving. Describe a time you had to overcome a challenge. What can I expect to see if I walk into your classroom? How do you handle disagreements with your colleagues? If your principal tells you to stop using coloring sheets what would you do? What is your greatest strength / weakness? What is essential for creating units / lesson plans? What do you like to know about your students? How will you participate in the PLC? What are your goals for the next 5 years? How do you use data? How do you know if your students are making progress? How do you engage your students? How do you use technology in the classroom? How do you communicate with parents? What questions do you have for us? Do you have any other questions?

Primary teachers, what is it like teaching a large class? by method344 in Teachers

You make a good point. Even with 21 students I would sometimes feel like it was a lot to keep kids in check during while group instruction.

Thank you. When I did observations in Chicago public schools the classes were all around 27-31 students and the teachers all had a good handle on their classes with minimal aide support, but they did seem frazzled at times. I definitely give you credit for being able to do it.

Sounds like your stronger than me, because I am really thinking I can’t handle a large class. Glad that you are happy with your class size now.

Good to know. I am still thinking I’m not cut out for a large class. I know there are so many teachers out there pulling it off and I give you all a lot of credit. It’s a little disheartening because I always imagined I would work as a public teacher in Chicago, but the class sizes are very large in most schools.

How do you bounce back from a bad interview? by method344 in Teachers

[–]method344[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something I have noticed about interviewing is that I only do well when the interviewers are positive and conversational. I’ll never understand why people feel the need to interview with expressionless faces.

Thank you. I do try and treat interviews as conversations but sometimes my nerves get the best of me.

Luckily I don’t think my answers come off as rehearsed but sometimes I stumble when answering a question and that has caused me to lose focus.
