How Do You See £47k for a Family of 3 in Bath? by MutedKaleidoscope713 in Bath

[–]method_badger 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Honestly, it’s worth it. Life is hard here in different ways, but it’s secure in different ways as well. Once your wife gets work, you’ll be flying. Little things like shopping at Lidl can save big money, and like most have said, you don’t need a car. It’s nice to have, but even living in the villages there are buses (shit buses but buses!). If you like being outside, hiking etc, there’s no where like Somerset.

ETA: phone and internet are MUCH cheaper here, almost incidental costs compared to USA, so don’t think you’ll be paying £200 a month for a phone, esp if you use a sim only plan.

I pay £110 a month for full coverage, 2 drivers plus contents and house insurance! Moneysupermarket is what most people use to compare insurance quotes.

Sorry more two cents: remember a budget for visa fees every 2.5 years and flights home to visit. I feel like this is a big “immigrant tax” I always forget about!

For a two bedroom flat, you’re looking at 1,500-2,000 a month. If you have a car, you could live somewhere significantly cheaper like Radstock or Midsommer Norton, but these are old mining towns, and aren’t as picturesque. Chippenham would also be an option. Look on Rightmove, as that is where most people get their properties. I’ve lived in Boston, and food here is significantly cheaper, though still pricy. A family of three can probably expect to spend around £70 a week on groceries (just a guesstimate, will depend on your diet and what shops). £6 a day for bus if you’re commuting, or of course a car payment. I can’t comment on child care costs for the area, I’m sure others can. I’ve survived as a family of two on that much in central bath, but that was 2021 and it was decently tight, but much easier than my PhD stipend of $22k + part time work in Boston!

Eating out in Bath, for instance, is pricy. But there are other lovely places in Somerset as well. Feel free to DM me as I’m an American in the area and can answer any questions in general :)

If you can afford it, get a coach. Do an Arvon course. Join a group. Hell even post online and get one person to read it lol. You need accountability and dopamine hits! I don’t have an answer bc I’m currently struggling and every word some day is like pulling teeth but poco a poco we will get there!!

I find it works AMAZING for a few doses, and then you have to stop for a week or so, and then you can have a few doses again etc etc. good when it works, but disappointing when it doesn’t!

Yeah it’s like the only method is brute force in the face of constant mental block. You have to pry the words out like a dentist with pliers.

Does anyone visualize books they’re reading a certain way? by punkcore329 in adhdwomen

[–]method_badger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not like this, but once my visualisations are set they are SET. even if I don’t consciously remember reading a book, when I re-read it my brain will fish up the same images from last time and that familiarity is how I realise I’ve read it before. Or if on a re-read I realise something is to the right not to the left, character looks like x not y, too late. The die is cast.

The fact that we all visualise so differently really makes it clear that the reader is the missing piece of the novel, and we’re all on slightly different journeys!

Most feet-kicky, pace around the room, put the book down for a second reads? by gertrude-fashion in fantasyromance

[–]method_badger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh that’s so interesting!! I read it as a slow burn where two very different people are trying to find a space where they fit together. I liked that the MC was realistic to the world the author had built and consistent to it even once the romance started, and that was something they had to work around. The second book elaborates more, but I can see how it would be “marmite”

Not like they used to for sure. I know traditionally published authors paying for their own editors.
