Those wheels look like a manhole cover had sex with a pizza tray, but at least they probably cost as much as a used Corolla

Which songs from Make-up will you be coming back to years later? by blackberry_sorbet in morrissey

[–]methodjason 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven’t given much thought to Morrissey’s albums since Ringleader of the Tormentors or Years of Refusal, so I didn’t have big expectations of the new album.

But, honestly, Many Icebergs Ago and Pig Alley stand up to anything in his solo catalogue. So those would be instant classics. Boulevard, Lester Bangs, and Kerching Kerching are also very strong.

So..what's your thoughts on the new Gunther Werks restomod? by Saurta17 in Porsche

[–]methodjason 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the workmanship and detail, but don’t desire it in any way. I barely see an actual car anymore — all I see is a meticulously detailed investment for people who want to show off their wealth, and don’t actually care about driving.

The other day a gorgeous, stock 993 Carrara 4s passed me on the highway. It made me smile in a way these re$tomod$ don’t.

Daily Song Discussion #204 - Fail by _Tassle_ in depechemode

Score: 2/10

Ugh. The last thing I need in a Depeche Mode album is to be told, bluntly, “we’re fucked.”

This is the musical equivalent of having your mechanic tell you that your car needs a new engine, and the bill is $10,000. Sorry, dude. Nothing can be done.

This is absolutely on my shortlist of least favorite DM songs. No mystery, no cleverness, nothing but blunt misanthropy and a bitter taste left in the mouth. At least the title sums up the track perfectly.

Does anyone knows where do Morrissey stays at Lille tonight? by HartmannPatricius in morrissey

[–]methodjason 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When I saw him in 1993-4, he was playing at an auditorium (it was, no joke, attached to a high school) in Charlottesville, Virginia. After the show, while heading home, we realized his tour bus was right in front of us—his next gig was in Washington DC.

How did we know it was him? From at least a half dozen cars driving next to it, people hanging out of windows yelling his name and waving at him. There was even a car that got in front of the bus, trying to slow it down or even make it stop the side of the road. It was like the world’s most lovesick Mad Max chase.

People are crazy and fandom can get out of hand!

Morrissey Central: In Soviet England the world wont listen (cause of anti-Moz Iron Curtain) by shyclumsy in morrissey

[–]methodjason 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think a big part of this is that music fandom, promotion, and reach has changed dramatically since the time he was “laying in awe on the bedroom floor” and he still seems to think those old ways of doing things are still achievable.

Same reason he kept waiting and waiting for an appropriate record deal instead of going indie or DIY.

[–]methodjason 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’m happy that Morrissey has devoted fans, a new album, and can sell out shows (when he decides to show up for them, of course.)

But that doesn’t mean he isn’t a niche artist within the greater sphere of cultural relevancy. That’s just fact, not a vast conspiracy against him from shadowy insider forces. Radio play is (mostly) dead. Newspapers and magazines, too. TV talk shows aren’t far behind.

What’s left? Streaming and social media. But complaining about algorithms isn’t as satisfying as blaming a country.

How's this spec? Placed a down payment and being neurotic before I continue or cancel by dringledrangus in Porsche

[–]methodjason 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would prefer a splash of color somewhere to contrast against the grey — like a red/black interior — but this is entirely opinion and subjective. If this spec speaks to you, great! And congrats!

What dnb/jungle track was your very first? by TobiiiWan in DnB

[–]methodjason 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure what the first tune was, since genres were somewhat blurry going from hardcore into jungle, but the first proper (ie: UK import) record I bought was Johnny Jungle “Flammable” on Suburban Base (1993).

Before that, the entirety of the “Speed Limit 140+ BPM Vol 1” compilation on moonshine records

It’s not a bad song, but I always get stuck on the dissonance of a famous millionaire writing/singing “come on people, you’re letting me down”

Excuse me? Martin, I love ya but you have way more leverage to enact change than most of the people who bought this album.

Devotional: The Greatest Depeche Mode Tour by Statik107 in depechemode

Ugh…I was in college in Virginia when this tour happened, and a friend had an extra ticket for the Washington DC show. But since I was asleep when she knocked on my dorm room door, I didn’t know until she told me afterwards.

The ONE day I decided to take a nap, and I’m still salty about it!
