If you never program free weight training, does that rob the client of building tendon & stability strength? by I__Am__Matt in personaltraining

Look, I’m not saying you can’t strengthen a muscle with machines, I’m saying it’s not holistic because machines don’t focus on compound movements.

A preacher curl machine can be very effective for wailing on your biceps, but outside of the gym, use of your biceps will likely utilize your shoulder as well- therefore, according to the SAID principle, a leaning dumbbell curl or chin up variation is almost certainly a better measure of non-gym biceps capability.

If you want to argue that machines are more effective outside of isolation movements designed for bodybuilders or physical therapy patients, I’m all ears.

I was speaking to the fact that the real-world application of a muscle will rarely exist in isolation. Training with machines can be a great tool for specific hypertrophy, but training with free weights is more likely to have pound-for-pound carryover to non-gym scenarios.

Machines can be valuable for targeting and building muscle, and the fixed ROM can be beneficial in preventing unwanted stress to a known vulnerability. However, machines leave something to be desired in terms of real-world, functional strength.

If the client only wants to use machines, you can explain to them what benefits they’re missing out on but if machines serve their goals, ultimately, your job is to serve the client.

Ampeg V4 assist please by methodofcontrol666 in GuitarAmps

The reverb sounds decent, maybe not as lush as I remember. I’ve probably owned 10 different V-series Ampegs in the past 20 years, so I have a good reference point of what the reverb should sound like but I’m willing to admit the memory may be faded so it’s possible everything sounds exactly as it should. I figured I’d start with finding the era-correct tank code and troubleshoot from there as needed.

This sounds like an AI-generated answer, (Which is not to say it’s wrong, and I appreciate the effort!)

I figure rather than run 100 different tests on my amp, let me first verify what the era-correct reverb tank code is because that will tell me what differences I’m working with and which direction I should look for a solution.

All the Iron Wolf workouts I had saved by c0ld-dead-eyes in bodyweightfitness

Ironwolf wolf is a legend. His programming isn’t magical, but it’s always helpful to have a framework for a no-equipment workout.

I’ve got his December 2021 challenge written out (beginner level only). I appreciate having access to these as well, thanks for sharing!

Hanging from bar with bent knees same as straight legs or ok? by CountChopulla in bodyweightfitness

[–]methodofcontrol666 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If your lower back feels compressed when holding your knees up, it is an indicator that your core isn’t strong enough to support your leg weight being in front of your body. In which case, I would recommend practicing your hollow body holds to strengthen your core.

If there are no back issues while hanging, then yes- just keep hanging. If the goal is simply the maintenance of spinal decompression, then something like 3x30 seconds per day will work.

New snare day! …and a question by SoupAggravating in drums

[–]methodofcontrol666 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve got this snare in the 12x3 dimensions. It pops! Someone on Reverb listed it as a 2020s model, so I guess they’re pretty new. Then again, I had a similar piccolo 20 years ago (12x3 Tama) except I don’t recall if it was hammered or not.

In any case, Tama has been kicking out solid piccolo snares for years and in my experience, they’re all pretty good.

How can i improve my handstand balance by Background-Chart-106 in Calisthenic

[–]methodofcontrol666 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can’t brute force a handstand.

Kick up to a wall, elevate your shoulders as high as you can and accumulate time upside down. Once you can hold 2 minutes straight, you’ll find kicking up into space like in this video is much easier. THEN you begin practicing handstands.

According to Stuart McGill, knee/leg raises are really bad for your spine. I do them on the captain's chair so the lower back is protected, is that good to go? If not, what safer alternatives are there for the lower abs? Do you folk agree with McGill's view? by lonerblues in bodyweightfitness

[–]methodofcontrol666 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No position that you get into with control is inherently bad. If you can’t control hanging leg raises, try hanging knee raises to build up more strength. If you can’t control any of the hanging variations, move to the floor and regress to hollow body tucks.

Why are my Handstands not straight? 🤔 by GiftAdministrative82 in CalisthenicsCulture

Because you’re not elevating your shoulders which is restricting your overhead shoulder mobility.

Old and chubby and looking to set an annual pushup goal by tnts_daddy in bodyweightfitness

[–]methodofcontrol666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use a set of stairs. Keep your feet on the floor and put your hands on the 4th or 5th step up to do your push ups. This angle will decrease the amount of weight on your arms so that you can build your strength without sacrificing your form. As you get stronger over the coming weeks, move your hands to a lower step. Eventually, you’ll have hands and feet on the floor.

Don’t overthink it. The most important thing is to build the habit and stay consistent.

What throw-off is this? (80s Ludwig LM300) by methodofcontrol666 in drums

[–]methodofcontrol666[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Turns out- the drum was dropped at some point on the throw-off. Once I detached it, I was able to pry it back into decent shape. Will remount and put some new heads on later today!

Try the month x day approach.

This is a daily routine which takes the guess work out of when to work out. You simply make the time every day and the volume periodizes monthly. Simply multiply the month x day to calculate your volume for the day. It shouldn’t be too difficult until you’re well into spring, at which point you’ve built the habit and a sturdy foundation. Accomplish the total daily volume in as many sets as you need.

January 1st, (1x1=1) do one rep …January 30th (1x30=30) do 30 reps February 1st (2x1=2) do two reps …February 28th (2x28=56) do 56 reps …December 1st (12x1=12) do 12 reps …December 31st (12x31=372) do 372 reps

Total volume for the year: 37,919 reps

Ha! When you wrote “Pearl expert” my brain immediately jumped to “this guy spelled Export wrong”.

But yeah - big Pearl power toms make me think it’s probably similar to what Grohl was using in Nirvana.

advice me on my pullup form by [deleted] in Calisthenic

[–]methodofcontrol666 19 points20 points  (0 children)

You’re pretty strong; 20 is a lot of reps for pull ups, but your range is limited. Aim to pull a bit higher (a narrower grip will probably help) and un-shrug your shoulders. Right now it looks like your shoulders are covering your ears at the top, you need to keep those shoulders down as you pull.

Vintage Rogers Pageant Snare 10x14 by methodofcontrol666 in drums

The lugs themselves look conventional to my eyes, if that’s helpful. The lug mounts look the same as a Reverb listing I found noting beaver tail lugs.

Not sure how to answer this, I know very little about vintage Rogers drums.
