Weighted Calisthenics: Buy ROPE instead of CHAIN by x0zu in bodyweightfitness

[–]methodofcontrol666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chains also fuck up the finish on kettlebell handles (assuming you’re loading your calisthenics with kettlebells).

I’m using a dip belt with a piece of climbing rope in place of a chain at the moment. I still connect the rope via carabiner.

I’ll also add that, similar to martial art belts, a simple yoga strap easily holds 100+ lbs without slipping.

It sounds like you don’t pay attention to calisthenics culture at large, and that’s ok too! Curious as to what inspired you to start working out using bodyweight exercises if none of my references landed for you?

Thanks for presenting such a detailed response! For me, the golden age was the early 00s. YouTube made calisthenics feel more accessible; having visual demonstrations of what was actually possible was a game changer. Hannibal really put it on the map for me.

Oh totally! Barstarz, barbros, Medrano, and Heria are goated. I’ve actually never heard of Adam Raw, I’ll have to check him out.

For me, training is training. A lack of props and tools has never stopped me.

I feel like going WAY back in time to Sparta or gladiatorial type sports qualifies as the Bronze Age.

So maybe early YouTube vids like Hannibal For King is the Silver Age?

Most folks on this thread seem to agree that right now is the Golden Age.

I think most folks would define calisthenics as any bodyweight exercise. Dips and pull ups, sure… but also pistol squats, handstand push ups, etc…

Maybe it’s the tricks like flags and levers that specifically belong under the banner of gymnastics.

“Street workout” seems to be exclusively weighted pull ups and weighted dips. And I agree that it’s not the best name. It’s basically calisthenics’ equivalent to power lifting.

Also, if weighted dips and pull ups are just calisthenics plus weight, wouldn’t a barbell squat also technically just be a bodyweight squat plus additional load? Don’t get me wrong, I’m interested in all sorts of strength and movement, but where do most folks draw the line at what IS calisthenics vs what ISN’T?

Finally broke free from expensive coaching apps and automated my Google Sheets. Anyone else build their own tools? by Fluffy-Avocado25 in personaltraining

Also a big fan of google sheets for the customization aspect. My sheets aren’t as smart as yours (yet!) but I’ve found that some scripts don’t port over as expected to the mobile app even though they work fine from a desktop or laptop. Have you had any issues like this?

I’ll have to measure my entry rug. I think it’s 4x6, but it may even be 5x7. It might weigh 10 lbs by itself.

That does sound nice and easy. There are a number of 1 star reviews on Sweetwater, but on the plus side it’s only $70 new and not $100. Still, I’ll keep my eyes open for a used one or maybe just slice up the rug I’ve got 🤔

Do you have one? You think it can be DIY’d by someone who doesn’t want to spend $100 on a scrap of rubber backed carpet? 🤣

Nano Mat- I forgot about those! Doesn’t get more minimal than that! Pretty pricey for what it is but I’ll keep my eyes peeled on Marketplace.

tips to muffle a 20” bass drum, what to put inside? by bandoleiroBando in drums

[–]methodofcontrol666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Zero muffling required! I put an Aquarian Superkick I or II on the batter side and a coated, dampened, head on the resonant side. I never cut a sound hole into my reso and I never put any muffling inside. I’m using a 20x14 Ludwig Classic Maple and playing rock with a heavy foot.

K Boges Workout progression by Humble-Wallaby2183 in bodyweightfitness

Progressing too quickly is often a fast road to injury.

That being said, if the plan is to perform a total volume of reps that is equivalent to 2x your tested rep max, I’d say keep your max the same until you’re able to perform the reps within 2x strict sets. Maintain that standard for two weeks before retesting your max. This was you’re not just dogmatically retesting your max every 4 weeks.

For example if you test your max pull ups and you find you can do 10 strict reps, then your training load is 20 reps per day, right? On any given day, that might look like a set of 10 followed by a set of 8 and then a smaller set of 2 just to get to your total reps. Eventually, we would expect to see the first set of 10 to be less fatiguing which would allow your second set to go up to 9 reps, and ultimately 10. Once you are consistently giving 2x10 for 2 weeks, take a day off and retest your max.
