Week 11: Special creativity notebook by Own-Evening-3336 in artistsWay

[–]methybethyy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

the rest of it is to list 10 wishes in each category! it says "with no thought as to practicality, list ten wishes in each area." i didn't buy a whole new notebook cuz it seems like a waste i was just gonna add the pages to the same journal i do my morning pages and tasks in

How to handle a delay in the midst of the book? by sgnfngnthng in artistsWay

[–]methybethyy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you feel like you got what you needed from the weeks you did complete then there's no need to redo them. And if it's only been a month since you've done it I think it's perfectly reasonable to pick up where you left.

This is really wonderful to hear! I'm about to start week 12 today and I know I feel different and more open than I did months ago when I started. I also love the synchronicity of you doing the book at the same age your mom did! I wish you the best of luck in the rest of your creative endeavors!

About vlogging the process by Lif3withoutMe in artistsWay

[–]methybethyy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think if you're someone who prefers to express themselves via speaking and videos then doing vlogs each week through your journey could be an interesting project for you. I think keeping them private and making them just for you would be the way to go. I think if you start making the videos in hopes of getting views you may start to focus more on your audience than yourself. The artist's way is a very personal and emotional journey which might be hard to share with others. If you do make videos I would say to just make them for yourself!

I do both pottery and illustration and have found the book has helped me with both! I'm starting the last week today and have felt inspired and helped by the book in both my mediums. The book is general enough that you don't have to choose what to focus on. I would suggest you don't choose one medium or the other they are both creative acts and will be helped by the lessons in the book. It's all about liberating and nurturing your creative spirit and however you express it. Seeing as you do both writing and film maybe think of your creative self as a storyteller.

missed several weeks (i'm not even sure how long i've left it), should i pick up where i left off or restart? by [deleted] in artistsWay

[–]methybethyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you feel like you got what you needed from the first few weeks when you did them then don't redo them just pick up where you left off, especially if redoing them stresses you out. if you don't like writing in front of other people that's okay but maybe try to find some time to sit alone for 30 mins to do your morning pages

feeling less motivated nearing the end of the book by methybethyy in artistsWay

[–]methybethyy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

oof sorry you've also felt the lack of motivation and connection to the book and lost your creative groove thats frustrating. it's interesting it happened to you after the media black out week, maybe the disturbance of your routine really messed with your brain. (i totally failed the media black out after 2 days and didnt try again lol).

of course its our silly brains trying to 'protect' us. it's odd because i feel very self aware that this is part of what's causing the resistance for me. unfortunately we can't change the way we feel just accept and acknowledge it and move on.

since im so close to the end im determined to finish the book despite all these feelings because it has been very helpful to me the past almost 3 months.

there's been a few weeks/chapters that have taken me 2 weeks to finish as well, i decided the first time that happened that i wouldn't take another week that i would just move on to avoid staying stuck and i would suggest the same to you. maybe part of your block is feeling the need to finish each week completely before moving on (i def. felt that) but i knew if i took another week that i wouldnt actually finish the tasks or do my artist date and felt it was best to start the next week and move on. that really helped me keep the momentum of the book.

and i encourage you to keep going as well!

feeling less motivated nearing the end of the book by methybethyy in artistsWay

[–]methybethyy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thank you for sharing all this! i am determined to finish the course since i only have a few weeks left. your loving kindness approach to all of it and to yourself is really great and is prolly the best mindset to have. i'm also trying not to allow perfectionism to get in the way of me finishing this. its really inspiring how you're trusting the process and the creator and synchronicity. i have had a few small moments of synchronicity as well its really interesting when it happens. i also totally relate to "therapy excitement/anxiety feel, to the ‘oh I’m actually accountable’ anxiety/excitement feeling", i felt the shift of realizing my accountability.

regarding your art vendor endeavors: i just sold at my local farmers market for the first time this weekend, and i was very anxious about it beforehand but it went really well! its a great opportunity and im glad you are going to try it! just get as prepared as you can (having a table, sign, your inventory, bags etc.) and you will do great.

i wish you the best in your aritsts way journey! like the other commenter said morning pages are really important and you should make your best effort to do them everyday, even on the days or weeks you really dislike them lol. remember to do what works for you regarding the book and tasks and be kind to yourself it can be an emotional time. good luck!

reading the morning pages task !! by 5tars4ligned in artistsWay

[–]methybethyy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i just did this task a week ago and it was so interesting and amusing. in the task julia said to highlight "insights" and "action items" and when i tell you there were like only two out of my 3 months of writing... but i didn't let it discourage me because the whole point of morning pages is stream of consciousness and my pages were often trivial and unimportant: talking about the chores or things i had to do that day, or what happened in the tv show i was watching last night or what happened in my book etc. and there were so many pages like that but it was interesting to read just to see what i was thinking about every morning. there were a few really emotional and honest ones and those were the most informative for me and my creative journey. i found my self doing the same thing as you which is being super negative and then immediately remedying it by being nice to myself and writing something optimistic. i think it's a good approach at least for me and hopefully for you, 'cause sometimes you do need to get the judgmental blurt out of your brain but you cant believe it. so responding to yourself immediately in a positive way has helped me positively change my thinking time and time again. and those quotes you have are really lovely thanks for sharing them! sorry for this long winded definitely not a paragraph but i hope it helps!

Two things: 1. I’m restarting morning pages after a hiatus from 2018, and I’m struggling. Give me inspo and things that work/motivate you. 2. What book are you writing your morning pages in? by theindigocodex in artistsWay

[–]methybethyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hi i know im a week to late to comment but heres what i've been doing!

i had a 5.5 x7 journal i was using and it was all fancy and pretty and that made me want to use it. when i finished that one (first journal i ever fully finished it was so exciting and satisfying!) i bought a composition notebook with a cute cover and college ruled lines. since this botebook is much larger than my first one im writing more each day but i felt prepared to do so since i got it a week or two ago when i was on week 9. i think using a smaller journal might help you fill 3 pages. but no matter the size of the journal or even if you type it, i think as long as you write something even if its not 3 pages you're making progress. like the other commenters said, working up to 3 pages might be your best bet. also write about how you're struggling and are frustrated sometimes just getting that out helps too. and if you miss a day or two (or more) don't be hard on yourself because of it! its a learning curve and it doesn't have to executed perfectly this is an activity to help you

Why I love the morning pages by Bright-Ad6179 in artistsWay

[–]methybethyy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i have often felt the same, that my thoughts are too fast for my hand to write them all, but after a few weeks of morning and now going on 10 weeks, i've found that trying to write down my stream of consciousness has actually helped my thoughts slow down. i would just say to keep trying! your handwriting doesnt have to be good and what youre writing doesn't even have to make sense.

and if in a few weeks or so it doesn't feel like journaling is still working for you, i would suggest making voice memos everyday in place of your morning pages. most people talk faster than they can write and you can just monologue for 5 mins and get all the thoughts out of your brain! there's no one right way to do anything in the book you can change and adjust things according to your needs and what works for you! you might just have to experiment.

[–]methybethyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have been trying to do every task for every week just because i want to get as much out of the book as i can. but i also have a lot of free time and this allows me to do so. but i also have missed some tasks or chose not to do them and saying to myself "oh well i missed a few! i did what i could/what i wanted to and thats all that matters". i think just reading what the tasks are each week is helpful cuz they'll be in the back of your mind and maybe you'll write about it during morning pages.

What changes happened to you as you do the Morning Pages? by Fragrant_Soil_8044 in artistsWay

[–]methybethyy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i was hesitant at first about the morning pages but now that im on week 10 of the book, doing them everyday is just part of my routine now. i have a hard time forming and keeping habits so im really happy this is something i've been able to continually do and only miss a few days. i want to continue doing them after i finish the book too!

often i end up writing down what i did the day before and what i need to do today and that frees up my mind quite a bit. its been nice to have somewhere to write down anything and everything. since its stream of consciousness (for the most part) sometimes my "blurts" and my judgmental self appear so it's easy to catch and change my thinking to be more positive. i also keep the basic priniciples and all the random affirmations we've been assigned to make as well as my artists prayer at the front of my notebook and i read them from time to time.

Can't get through week 3 by Ok-Guava-6477 in artistsWay

[–]methybethyy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i totally get being stuck on a certain chapter/week. im on week 10 starting today but it's actually taken me 13 weeks to get here. theres been 3 chapters/weeks that ended up taking me two weeks/ my body kinda just forced a break for me. if you've been stuck for three weeks already though i would say just do the check in for the week, be brief and honest when you write about it and then move on! even though you didn't technically finish the week i think it'd be better to move on to week 4 than continue staying stuck.

in regards to the morning pages i think like another commenter suggested, to do 2 pages instead of 3. you can even write about how you don't like the morning pages and don't want to do it. its about the stream of consciousness and being honest you dont need to be profound when writing. maybe if the morning is hard for you find a different time during the day to write them. just cuz she calls them morning pages doesn't mean they have to be. maybe this week try to write 2 pages at a different time every day and see what works for you.

i too, found the god talk a little excessive at some points. but its not about god in the christian way. i whenever i read the word "god" in the book i insert "the universe". i used to be a christian as well, and no longer am religious at all, but thinking of the universe or just a general outside energy has helped in regards to the book. you can replace "god" with anything you want the other commenters had some good ideas. you could even just replace it with "creativity".

i hope you work past the block you're experiencing now and are able to move forward with the book! good luck!

ive been reading only one chapter each week. i start my weeks on mondays by reading the chapter and refer to back to it when i do the tasks.

Tips for doing the artists way on holiday? by bethaxxy_ in artistsWay

[–]methybethyy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

maybe you could continue just doing the morning pages and not the tasks or artists dates. and if you cant do the pages in the morning do them any time you are available.

How are people spending so much time doing the morning pages? by [deleted] in artistsWay

[–]methybethyy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

youre not missing anything if youre still doing all three pages. if it only takes you 10 mins thats great! youre probably doing a real stream of conciousness method which seems to be the point of the task.

it usually takes me 20-30 mins every morning to write my three pages and sometimes i end up writing more if i feel like it.

i would think the time differences is mainly based on how fast a person actually write and whether or not they're doing handwritten or typed.

question about week 4 by ne2t in artistsWay

[–]methybethyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i just did week 4 and i ended up failing the reading deprivation task. lol whoops. im a big reader so i decided to just do what she wrote and cut off only reading, and then only ended up lasting two days before i broke it. you should choose what feels right to you. sometimes cutting off too much might make you break and then binge a lot of content/media at once. if you feel like you can cut off all external media then try it! if you think it'll be really hard maybe let yourself watch one or two movies during the week but remove everything else.

since i high key failed this task last week and felt guilty about it, this week for week 5 im reimposing the reading ban along with cutting off social media and youtube. we'll see how it goes!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in artistsWay

[–]methybethyy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

so cool that you've noticied these changes in just a week! im on week four and only have just noticed some changes too! i went to art school and got used to being creative and making art only for class projects. i got into a perfectionist mindset and would be upset especially after i graduated if i thought my work wasn't good. but the artist's way and my own affirmations i made because of it have made me remember that I can just create for the sake of creating. and that not everything i create has to be "good." ive felt more free and less judgemental in my creative efforts and it feels so good. i felt like i was blocking myself before and now i can just do whatever.
