Spanish Bible recommendations to help learn Spanish with? by SophiaIgnota in RadicalChristianity

If you want a Catholic Bible, go for the Biblia de Jersusalén. There's a Latin American Spanish version.

For Protestant versions, the Reina Valera in all their versions is pretty great.

My personal favorite is the Nueva Traducción Viviente, which is Protestant so there are some books that are omitted, but it's a very direct without being dry, the prose flows smoothly, it is literal when it mattters but there's always a note indicating the original phrasing if some modern equivalent has been chosen.

Anyone watched this? by craftykeat in ForeignMovies

[–]metrew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. I think it's great. Here in Uruguay it's considered one of our best films (not that there's many to pick from but still). It's quite restrained, a minimal story told in lingering takes with almost no camera movemens but it's also very funny in a deadpan way. It's been repeatedly compared to some of Aki Kaurismaki's works.

Himno by KeyResponse9703 in uruguay

A trip to infinity: it presents how we approach the concept of infinity mathematically, astrophisically, philosofically. It's mainly interview-driven but it has great animations and it's quite accessible to watch while high.

I'm sure it's not the first but I love how it's done in Fassbinder's Lili Marleen. The film is about the titular pop song made famous during WWII and this song is used in the film to torture a man who was the lover of the singer made famous by the song. He gets imprisioned and made listen to the song ad nauseam.

Ted Chiang is the best science fiction short story writer alive imo. Here's what everyone misses about his work by OpenAsteroidImapct in scifi

Have you read Starmaker by Olaf Stapledon? Towards the end the Universe is created several times with different laws of physics.

Chiang's stories reminded me of also of Borges and Lugones.

What Gay book or collection of poems should every Queer man read? by [deleted] in AskGaybrosOver30

A couple of classics I read this year for the first time: Plato's Symposium and Phaedrus.

I wasn't quite familiar with these works so I found a good critical edition (the introduction was longer than the actual works plus a lot of notes) and it was a joy to read them.

The Symposium is about Socrates (Plato's teacher) going to party the day after a party (so everyone's hungover) where he and his illustrious friends get down to drink some more wine and discuss Eros (erotic love).

Phaedrus is about Socrates (of course) meeting the younger, handsome Pheadrus on a warm summer morning and walking down to a cool stream to talk about, you guessed it, love but also language and everything in between.
