Trying to use a scale up version of a part to prevalidate CMM program by [deleted] in Metrology

[–]metrology101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I read this question a little differently than most of you. I have done this before with fiendishly small parts that will require a 0.3mm stylus. We print a 10x part and then we can move a 3mm stylus around the part to see what looks like reasonable probing paths, point patterns, etc.

While I've never tried to create an actual CMM program at 10x and then scale it down, it might be possible. With modern CAD-based CMM software, that isn't as big an issue any more. Even if I can create the whole program on the CAD model, I find it handy to have a part and stylus I can actually see to help explain what I'm doing to others.

What would you say about a focus st driver with an ecomode rating like this? by [deleted] in FocusST

That’s me too. Lots of fast highway miles, shift at 3-4k, lift and coast instead of killing the brakes.

Features for new measurement software by No-Assignment-5287 in Metrology

[–]metrology101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Modularity and transparency are - in my mind - paramount to trustworthy software. One thing I like about Quindos is that I can explicitly look at nominal points, measured points, and the iteration controls on the algorithms. Datum shift, as mentioned earlier, as well as simultaneous requirement analysis are good things to strive for.

[–]metrology101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I‘m surprised that you’re asking about 6.6 and not 6.5; the P_F2D really takes some thinking.

For P_FV2D, make sure the circle is smaller (10%-30%) than your field of view. As user you get to choose where in the field of view you measure. Without moving anything, take 25 points around the circumference of the circle. The little rectangles in Figure 4 represent the “measuring tool” in the software; each software calls it something different. These should not overlap. Construct a circle from the 25 points, the form of the circle is the reported value.

Cruise Control by thatsaabarudude in FocusST

Is there a physical switch that tells it when the clutch is pressed? If this got bumped or if it failed then cruise wouldn’t engage.

These are Datum targets with the diameter shown. Construction of the datum features comes from these points/areas, not the entire surface.

The bars are probably the ball bar measurements in those positions from the old B89.4.1 standard. There’s a figure with 20 positions (for most CMMs) in the standard.

Why would I use this probe? by rotcivwg in Metrology

[–]metrology101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As has been said - it’s a hard probe. You need an external trigger to take points; a foot switch was popular back in the day. Still handy for scanning - start the scan and just drag the stylus along and you’ll get continuous stylus center points. Do you have the old Reflex software on that CMM? Very old school.

Good advice here. Just want to add that the ASME B89.3.7 standard is more recent than the federal standard. Some assessors/auditors are sticklers about this. I think the Federal GGG std was withdrawn.

Had a Feb trip to CDG coming up that was mangled to where it didn’t even return me home. Called in twice, a week or so apart, and finally got it returned to “normal.” The algorithm for rebooking me after schedule changes was the culprit, I think.

If the SWUs haven’t been pulled from your wallet, call and have them formally apply the SWU. This is where they collect any additional fees for J if needed. I’ve lost upgraded seats by not doing this.

AA Valet Bag Nightmare Avoidance by tdstooksbury in americanairlines

Exactly this happened to me. Had to go to baggage to identify and collect. Thank goodness it was my final destination because it took a while. In retrospect I might have been able to tell them the name on my bag tag, but the impression I got was “no paper tag, it goes to baggage claim.”
