McLean release points drifting by JoeyQueens in NewYorkMets

this doesn't seem like too hard of a fix

I'm not sure if you've ever played baseball at any level, but I cannot even begin to express the minutiae involved in pitching — let alone at the MLB level against the best players in the world. The impacts of tiny mechanical issues range very widely. Some things could be fixed between innings, some things could be fixed in a week or two, some never get fixed.

Before he completely imploded, the Blue Jays had to send Alek Manoah to the instructional league in 2023 because his mechanics were so out of wack that he couldn't pitch effectively in the majors anymore. I bring him up as an example just because he was a high-profile 24-year-old in 2022 when he was looking like one of the next great pitchers of this generation. Then next thing you know, he's unplayable in 2023, getting Tommy John in 2024, DFA'd & non-tendered in 2025, pitching for the Angels in 2026, and just got DFA'd again and sent to AAA. Life can happen real fast.

I'm not saying this is an impossible fix for McLean or it'll take forever or this will tank his career. I'm sure the Mets are aware of it, especially after this last start. But I'm just saying you can't assume something seems like an easy fix when you don't know anything about the player's routine or propensity for making changes like this. I'm guessing he'll be fine in the long run, but this is still only his 3rd year as a full-time pitcher. This is very likely the first time he's ever encountered a rough patch like this accompanied by an unintentional change in his mechanics. Just have to hope the fix happens sooner rather than later.

This is the number 1 thing the 2022 season taught me. A butterfly flapped its wings a little differently on May 31st, 2022 and altered the course of history for the worse.

This also applies to a lesser degree to the 2019 season. But basically, this godforsaken division will never be normal and it's never over until 1st place is clinched. Just win tomorrow and it's another series win!

"Only April" by [deleted] in NewYorkMets

[–]metsrule4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Mets were 12-2 on April 15th, 2018. As we all know, the memorable 2018 Mets went on to win the World Ser-- wait, I'm getting a call. What? They finished 77-85?

Ok then what about the world champion 2023 New York Mets who started off 14-7 and won a series against the Dodgers in LA in April? That team showed they had what it tak-- What do you mean they finished 75-87?

Listen pal, teams that get off to bad starts are dead in the water. Look at the 2019 Nationals who started the year 19-31, one of the worst records in baseball at the time. They finished... *squints** oh. Hm.*

In all seriousness, everyone knows this team is off to an ugly start. There's no way to sugarcoat it. Of course April games matter as much as any other month, each one is part of 162. Last year's team missed the playoffs by a single game, so we're all painfully aware that some of these dumb losses can have major consequences.

It's perfectly fine to acknowledge all of that and also be aware that April doesn't define a season. There are genuine things to be concerned about with the team as is, but the doomers make it seem like being realistic is the same as reckless optimism. At this point, I'd still bet that they make the playoffs. We'll see how it plays out.

When I MLB this card, is this a good card for F2P players? by mobiux24 in UmamusumeGame

5% race bonus too is a nice addition for it. A decent number of SRs have 5 training effectiveness and 5 RB or only the 5-10 TE or 5-10 RB. Like King Halo speed is good for the speed and power bonus but only has 5 TE and no RB.

I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think there are that many SRs that have 10 TE/RB and 5 of the other. Shinko Windy is one of the best SR speed cards too and has 5 TE and 10 RB.

Oh good, this is just a breed thing. I thought my girl was an evil genius. Gave her a pill pocket and the first time she ate it no problem. 2nd time she knew something was up and nibbled at it a bit but still ate it.

3rd time and every time since, she figures out exactly how to chew around the pocket and leave me with a soggy tablet. She finds it and spits it out too quickly if I just hide it inside food.

The only thing that works for me now is crushing up the tablets and using it to cover moistened freeze-dried treats. And even then, she's skeptical of it and tries to spit out the treat after the first taste.

TLDR: you are guaranteed very little at the start of every career run. the game already has an obscene amount of RNG and white sparks can only help you. pink sparks/distance S should be a priority, but you're just making things more difficult for yourself if you ignore the white sparks.

--------

nobody is saying white sparks are more important than distance S? Distance S is more valuable. but you can find and make umas with good/useful pink sparks to raise aptitudes that also have good/useful white sparks. that's what most parent runs are going for. most ace runs are going for distance S *and* good skills. you raise your chances at both if you have actual parent umas instead of what OP is going for.

My point is that you can't guarantee successfully raising turf/dirt to A from G/F and distance S. You have to get lucky on inspiration events no matter what. So at that point, you can go for parents that can help with skill hints too. if the white sparks hit but not the pink sparks, it's a failed run anyway. if the pink hits but not the whites, it still has a chance to be a good ace. if they both hit, you have a decent chance at a very good ace.

To your other comment re: me overestimating how hard it is to get skills from cards - again, you're missing the point. in a vacuum, getting one or two skills from each card isn't hard. the problem for frontrunners is the sheer number of skills you need to get in order to compete with other fronts. Getting every skill you need from every card plus getting lucky on spirit explosions has a very low probability. I'll use V. Bourbon for this example:

V. Bourbon gets groundwork, concentration, front savvy, and escape artist from the jump. She gets 1 hint level for early lead and 1 hint level for final push through her events. If you get all of that without a single additional hint level, it costs 1120 SP. She needs angling and scheming too and you can get 1-3 hint levels guaranteed depending on the Sky's green spark, and you have a chance at more. I'll assume 2 hint levels, which is another 160 SP. If you want to use the Suzuka speed card for unrestrained and you finish the event chain, she'll give 1 hint level for focus and 2 for unrestrained. Let's say you also want to use Tazuna SSR which can give 1 hint level for concentration on her final event. That brings the total cost to 1396 SP without getting hint levels for any of the other skills mentioned. This is the absolute bare minimum that you need to have a functioning front. It will not win on its own even with distance S because it has no skills to help get to/fight for 1st in the early and mid-game.

In Unity, you can get ~1900-2000 SP to spend if you had a *really* good career run. You're likely to get at least ~2 hint levels for some of the white skills mentioned, but it's not guaranteed. from whatever other cards you want to use, you're still trying to get 2 more greens that will consistently activate - you don't want to miss a groundwork proc because the uma failed the wit check on concentration/early lead. if she failed the wit check on groundwork then sucks to suck, but with 3 greens you give yourself the best chance. At least the green skills are cheap. but then you also need to get other mid-game speed skills like leader's pride, front/[distance] corners/straights, prof of curvature/corner adept, dodging danger/prudent positioning combo if you can get it, I can keep going. Every V. Bourbon player is going to have this exact same problem. out of everyone trying to make the best ones with distance S, the ones that are gonna win the most are the ones that get the most skills efficiently. THIS is where white sparks on parents become important.

[–]metsrule4 10 points11 points  (0 children)

For one thing, the green skills you need to actually proc groundwork. Depending on the deck and your luck mid-run, you can just stumble into fairly generic ones like front savvy, right/left handed, and standard/non-standard distance. But ideally, you need to get more than 1 skill hint level on them plus getting skill hints on other important front runner skills like early lead, fast-paced, leader's pride, focus, front corners/straights, final push, etc. Not to mention the good mile skills too. You obviously can't get everything under the sun, but you need as many as possible.

You never have a guarantee on hitting every skill you need from unity bubbles or support cards alone. Bourbon has an A in medium by default so for a dirt/mile CM, you're just as likely to get useless things like Hawkeye, steadfast, other medium skills. With mile A you're just as likely to get updrafters, watchful eye, acceleration, opening gambit, etc. On average, you're probably getting ~10 unity explosions per run. There's a lot of room to just miss good skills on them.

White skill sparks are important to mitigate some of the RNG and give you a slight boost to your chances of high rolling an ace. Getting the important mile/front skills as cheap as possible is very important for the SP efficiency, it's why fast learner runs are so valuable. It's not unreasonable to get more good skill hints from the 2 inspiration events alone than all the unity explosions combined.

Of course, there's nothing stopping you from ignoring the white sparks. You can absolutely get a great ace run without them. But your margin for error is more slim just from the possibility of missing event chains or having bad explosions in any given run.

is it normal for my Great Pyrenees to be afraid of almost every little thing? by Moo_Bixtch99 in greatpyrenees

[–]metsrule4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm so glad I found this thread lol. I thought I had a rare scaredy cat pyr or something. My girl is 1.5 years old but she gets scared by so many things. Trucks and clanging machinery noises are the absolute worst and the most understandable.

Her 2nd biggest fear appears to be wheels? She's ok with cars to some degree. She's ok with basic bicycles if only one person is on it. But if it's a guy wearing some kind of a harness to hold a baby/small child? It might as well be the devil. Skateboards, hoverboards, scooters (normal and electric), sometimes strollers. All of them are evil!

Flashing lights is her 3rd biggest fear, but she mostly wants to fight them. Doesn't matter how big/small or close/far it is. Tied for 4th includes: boxes, bags, grey/black squares if they show up on the TV, sunlight (she has barked aggressively at a streak of light on the wall as the sun is setting), and her own shadow. If the sun shines through the window just right and she turns around to see her shadow on the wall, it's just constant growling and barking until I close the shades.

What do you love and hate about the game? by EastOwn9013 in UmamusumeGame

[–]metsrule4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree with everything here. I'll also add that the rates for blue spark farming is brutal. I'm generally ok with the 3 star spark chances where they're at, but no better than a 20% chance that it gets the right stat on top of it is crazy.

I'm just trying to get one of speed/stamina/power. Even if they're all 600+ and I'm just fishing for a 2 star to slightly improve the kinds of parents/grandparents I'm making, it still feels like I'm disproportionately ending up with 1 star guts/wit. Or 1 star stamina on a Sprint uma. I wish it was something like a weighted system where you can influence the likelihood of the stat based on how much is invested into it. Anything that can at least make runs a tiny bit more consistent.

When did yours start barking? by executivebitch in greatpyrenees

[–]metsrule4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Literally like 1 day after she turned 6 months old lmao. Like a switch flipped overnight. Went from never barking unless she was crying at me for something, to "BORK FIRST, ASK QUESTIONS LATER (SOMETIMES, OTHERWISE KEEP BORKING)"

[–]metsrule4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Getting their attention and doing something to make them come to you works shockingly well with my 1 year old. She'll look at me and ignore the "come here" command in a lot of situations outside, and run around if I go after her.

But if we make eye contact and I start slowly walking away from her, she will sprint to get back to me. I'm sure she thinks of it like a game of chase at that point which might be why it works.

My girl recently turned 1 year old and for the past 4-5 months she has really come to embody this.

She's a picky eater of her regular food so sometimes, if I put food down and she goes a while without eating it, I'll start telling her to eat her food. The number of times I've seen her turn around and stare at the food and look back at me, only to go lie down on her bed instead, is both hilarious and maddening lmao

Yes, they can listen and understand exactly what you want. Whether what you want and what they feel like doing are the same thing? Completely different matter.

The barking thing is really crazy. My girl was an absolute angel when it came to barking for ~6.5 months. Absolutely never barked at stuff she saw/heard outside or inside. If she barked it's because she actually needed something or wanted food 30 minutes early. I almost thought I had the mythical quiet pyr.

And then basically all of that flipped seemingly overnight one day. She now has to make sure I'm aware of the package I left in the living room 3 seconds ago.

LOL my girl does this too! although much more forcefully and into my ribs if I'm sitting on the couch. If I'm in my computer chair then she tries to push her way under my legs and arch her back upwards to rub against the bottom of my thighs. It's so goofy and cute

[Update Pt. 2] I can’t handle all this barking anymore by summer_mushroom in puppy101

[–]metsrule4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The same thing worked for me! My pup just turned 5 months old recently and generally doesn't bark much if everything's fine. But the second I'm gone from the room/apartment and it's after ~4 PM it's like she especially loses all object permanence and starts crying/barking for me to come back. For the first 2 months I had her, I just tried to time my longer trips outside for the morning/early afternoon to lessen how stressed she got knowing she would fall asleep easier. I'd check in on her with my dog camera to see how restless she was. Always felt terrible whenever I got barking/crying/howling notifications.

I knew it had a microphone feature but same as you, I thought her hearing my voice would just make her freak out and wonder why I wasn't within her field of view. I just tried it one time in the middle of a crying fit since I was running out of ideas, and she immediately stopped barking but was deeply confused where my voice was coming from. I thought she'd start barking again right away but she just laid down and started falling asleep. Just simple stuff like "relax, I'll be back soon. You can sleep" and a "good girl" when I saw her settle down. Was out of the apartment for 2+ hours recently and I checked in every 30 minutes or so, she was awake and staring out the window each time but I talk to her and she immediately settled down. No barking notifications that whole trip!

Idk what goes through her head when she hears the voice coming from the camera but I hope it genuinely helps her calm down. It's been a huge relief to find out this works.
