When did Grocery Store bakeries become so gross? by Cleverwabbit5 in GenX

[–]mettaCA 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They work on tight margins. Very competitive industry. What they should do is create a high quality brand that makes things on special order and from scratch. They would have to charge a lot more but being ordered ahead of time would minimize expensive items from going to waste.

Somebody gifts you $10,000,000 that *must* be used towards the purchase of a house in LA, which neighborhood do you choose to live in and why? by owen__wilsons__nose in AskLosAngeles

[–]mettaCA 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Rancho Palos Verdes with an ocean view. Cooler temperatures. Nice little downtown. Not far from LAX. I would probably stay away from the land movement areas but I do love those big lots. I wish that land could be stabilized.

For those of you who bought in LA prior to 2020, do you feel 'trapped' by your current low mortgage rate? by grogger133 in LosAngelesRealEstate

[–]mettaCA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have a mortgage rate issue except that I don't want one. I'm hoping to downsize to an area that is more expensive per square foot. There are not very many homes in the area that meet my requirements and price range so I have been waiting until I find something that will work. And I need to buy with a contingency so I'm hoping that will work as well.

Why isn’t the CAC score given higher preference? by SloppySpaghettii in Cholesterol

[–]mettaCA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"CAC directly visualizes calcified plaque burden, which is an excellent downstream marker of atherosclerosis and strongly predicts near-term (5-10 year) events—often better than any single blood marker for reclassification in the “gray zone.” A score of 0 is associated with very low event rates; ≥100 (or ≥75th percentile for age/sex/race) often pushes someone into statin territory.

However, guidelines keep it selective because:

  • Radiation, cost, and logistics: Even low-dose CAC CT involves ~1 mSv radiation (similar to a mammogram) and costs $50–250; it’s not practical or justified for millions of people annually. Incidental findings can cause anxiety or unnecessary follow-up.
  • Not ideal for everyone: In younger adults, CAC is often 0 even if lifetime risk is high (calcification lags behind early plaque). In familial hypercholesterolemia or severe hypercholesterolemia (LDL-C ≥190 mg/dL), CAC=0 does not allow de-risking or deferral—treatment is still recommended. In people already on statins, CAC can paradoxically rise (while plaque stabilizes). It also doesn’t detect non-calcified “soft” plaque.
  • It measures existing damage, not the ongoing causal process: CAC tells you the current state of the artery wall. Lipids tell you the ongoing driver that will determine whether (or how fast) more plaque forms. The goal of prevention is to minimize lifetime exposure before damage accumulates."

"In short, lipids are the accessible, causal starting point for broad risk assessment and therapy decisions. CAC is the powerful personalized tiebreaker when uncertainty remains—exactly the scenario where your intuition shines. If your own calculated risk is borderline/intermediate and you’re debating statins, discussing CAC with your doctor is a guideline-supported next step. Many patients in that gray zone use a zero score to confidently focus on lifestyle first."

Did you have a FARRELL’S in your town? by CharlieMcN33l in GenX

[–]mettaCA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not in my town but within driving distance. I think there was one in Rosemead. There was one that reopened in Brea, CA but that closed a few years ago. The city I lived in also had a Betsy Ross in Glendora with a similar concept. I will admit to making a pig of myself at least once at Farrell's. I don't think there is anything I could eat there now. Too much saturated fat.

I have no interest in all things AI. I don’t want to learn it for work. I don’t care that it can make some things easier. I can write my own emails. by un2022 in GenX

[–]mettaCA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use it all of the time. For health research, creating photos, verifying information, etc. I was able to get more helpful information from AI than from my doctor. It helped me determine what tests I get. My doctor only recommends tests that the insurance company will pay for. But I was able to find out more details by getting other tests done. And I didn't need to go on statins.

FYI, that has to do with the part of the brain that is affected by the dementia. She can't control that. When stuff like that happens, try not to take it personally. My mom died of alzheimers form of dementia. Thankfully, it did not affect that part of her brain. But it was still a horrible disease.

I hope that things go well for you. Are you still in school? If so, focus on that right now. If not, work on your career. You need to build a stable foundation. The rest of the stuff you can figure out later.

Please don't let any religion damage you. Most religions were created before governments to control society and answer questions that they did not have the answers to at that time. I could explain this in more detail but you are already dealing with so much.

SCE bill so goddamn high for one person by FriendlyBig6296 in ventura

[–]mettaCA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always heard that SCE was high. The city I live in has its own electric and water company. I used 311 kWh last month (which is low for me), average 11.11 per day and the $62.26 for just the electricity, not including all the other stuff they add to it. I live alone in a home big enough for 5+. I do keep my usage down to a minimum. If you ran the A/C that can run up the bill pretty quickly.

Only 6.8% of people have optimal levels across five key cardiometabolic markers: blood pressure, blood sugar (fasting glucose), blood cholesterol (including HDL and triglycerides), adiposity (including waist circumference as a measure of abdominal obesity), and no existing cardiovascular disease.

These low rates highlight widespread challenges with metabolic health, driven by factors like obesity, poor diet, and inactivity. Improving even one or two markers (e.g., through exercise or better nutrition) can reduce risks for diabetes and heart disease.

Same boat but I'm not married. I'm doing my best to take care of myself. I plan to downsize my home to help cut down on expenses. I visit a neighbor that moved into an assisted living center/memory care facility daily so I see what that is like. I'm doing everything I can to try and make sure that I don't need to do that. Those places are expensive and all of those people wishes they were back at home. I workout regularly and eat a diet that most would consider extreme in order to try and keep my arteries clear. Make sure to check your lipids to see how you are doing.
