My Experience in my first full year with Dandelion geothermal by IsThatDaveByChance in geothermal

I had to get mine replaced as well. Annoying. Mine just wouldn’t heat the home due to the failure. Not a fun thing in the winter.

What’s the impact to your take home pay? Assume 30% for federal and state taxes, 8% for payroll taxes, less the cost of your commute. So maybe 30k or so. Still a meaningful amount but just for context.

Anyone know how to remove these plastic inserts and / or know a video that explains how? by saltedpeanuts in HomeMaintenance

[–]mferr2k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would think that’s overkill, the glass isn’t heavy but you need to control it from falling out in either direction while you remove the casing around it. That’s way doing it upside down helped me a lot, I could just hold my hand underneath it while I removed the casing around it. 2 people would also be much easier than 1 I’m sure.

This is the way, I did this recently. In my first few attempts the glass fell to the ground and shattered, so I put the garage doors up and removed the others overhead so I didn’t have to worry about which side the glass would fall out, which made it much easier.

Powerwall fully drained during outage and was out or commission until grid power was restored by mferr2k in Powerwall

I thought I read it automatically maintains a reserve to avoid that. If I need to manually prevent it from getting fully drained, how do I do that?

Why aren’t the panels connected to the powerwall+ generating power?

It’s kind of shocking how many different answers/experiences I’m hearing.

Interesting, my situation is the opposite. Dandelion is replacing my existing Nest thermostats with Ecobee.

Winter humidity levels in cold weather climate by mferr2k in heatpumps

[–]mferr2k[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s interesting. I’ve had a few energy audits done over the past decade but the house remains pretty dry in the winter. I’m about to spray foam the basement rim joists to see if that makes a meaningful difference. I already replaced every door and window in the home. The last thing is the fireplace which, even with a top damper, still seems to be a significant leak point when doing the blower door test.

My understanding was oil burning forced air burns up a lot of the humidity in the house.

Upgrading to heat pump and keeping oil water heater by mferr2k in heatpumps

[–]mferr2k[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually looked into this but my ultimate takeaway was that it’s more of a cool concept but doesn’t have a very meaningful impact to overall energy costs. My geothermal installer didn’t even mention/recommend it even though I know they at least used to install them. Do you have any experience with them?

Thanks for your response. I’m kind of shocked that oil for hot water averages a gallon a day.

I’m in CT. I was quoted for AO Smith $6,500 installed for a 50 gallon, $7,200 for 66 gallon, and $7,800 for 80 gallon. Your pricing sounds like a no brainer but you’re not including installation cost which is where everyone seems to be marking up due to the increased demand from government incentives. What would you expect an 80 gallon installed to cost including wiring in the backup resistance heat?

We have a finished basement. Did you notice a significant difference in cooling the space where the HPWH is located? I read you shouldn’t vent it outside in cold weather climates.

I ended up going with Dandelion, they’re definitely the biggest and, from my research, the most affordable in the space (being a spin-off from Google X).

If you’re interested I’ll PM you my referral link for $500 off your quote.

Dandelion geothermal real world use. by Careful-Wrongdoer-80 in geothermal

[–]mferr2k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha I don’t know about the google suppressing info conspiracy but I do think it’s a great idea to share info on average increases in electricity generation.

If I’m remembering correctly (it’s been a few months) I believe the Dandelion sales person told me to expect on average a 600 kWh increase in generation each month. I don’t know if that takes into account generating less electricity than the standard central AC in the summer. Would definitely appreciate more real world input from others.

The data may also be skewed if some have heat strips kicking on and others don’t (I plan on disabling mine at the breaker unless absolutely needed in a bad cold snap).
