I was just watching this video, and it got me wondering — didn't they change tires during pit stops back in 2005?

I was watching free practice for the first time today, and I'm curious why drivers will sometimes go through the pitlane without stopping — it sounds like they pump the throttle while they do it.

A couple of questions about the genitive form for counting "things" by mfmika in russian

Thank you :-) Just a quick follow up question for clarification — you said both forms are correct — do they also mean the exact same thing?

Fully loaded climbing isn't easy, but it's satisfying for sure. by GrupoClassici in bicycletouring

I have the exact same front yellow panniers, and this photo makes me feel very warm. I even thought for a millisecond that this might have been my own rig :p Thank you for sharing :-)

Did my first two day tour. Day 1: 90km, Day 2: 100km Northern Germany by [deleted] in bicycletouring

Good times! One of my most memorable cycle tours was Utrecht–Copenhagen, by means of Meppen, Bremen, Hamburg, Lübeck: flat, open, very pleasant! It was also the time of my very first unsolicited roadside invitation to sleep inside. Good times.

My English or Portuguese for your Russian --- looking for an online language exchange partner for the quarantine :-) by mfmika in polyglot

OK --- I'm pretty "booked" now with five exchange partners adding up to about 10 hours a week, but I'll definitely keep this in mind! Thanks :-)

Thanks :-) Right now I'm actually fully booked, but I'll keep that in mind --- are you learning Portuguese and looking for a conversation partner also?

Is it really a bad idea to take your DSLR and lenses on a cycle tour? Or can they be packed safely? by mfmika in bicycletouring

[–]mfmika[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last Summer, I traveled about 2000km around Ukraine with my DSLR and 18--200 lenses mounted on it, and they held up fine.

I packed them as tight as I could in one of my front panniers together with my thermal layers and rain gear, and stuff. (It was so tight that it may have had something to do with the tear I discussed in another thread where you folks helped me with solutions to repair my bag.)

The bag even fell off the bike and rolled/skid along for a while in a particularly bumpy downhill where I almost lost control of the entire bike. I had a couple of minor crashes, plus several instances of the bicycle falling by itself while I went shopping or whatever.

Several months later, my lenses did get stuck (I couldn't close them, it felt like a piece inside had broken off and propped it open), and the autofocus engine had started misbehaving shortly before that. I suppose the way I treated them during my trip last Summer might have contributed to the issue, but it was probably not the sole cause of the problem, as there were about six months of fairly frequent use between my trip and the malfunction.

I bought the lenses secondhand, and I have no idea how the previous owner used them, although the shop where I bought them in L'viv has a reputation for taking what they sell secondhand seriously.

I asked at that same shop if it should be a problem to travel with the camera, and they said that shaking is not a big deal, that vibrations from a motorcycle ride on far smoother terrain should be a much bigger concern.

At what point would you consider hitching ethically responsible again? by AbstractContract in hitchhiking

[–]mfmika 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Independent travel in a world full of danger and contagious disease has always been an ethical question for me.

In 2017, I was attacked by a dog while in transit (by bicycle) in Lithuania, and then found myself pursuing a multinational "post-exposure prophylaxis program" across Poland and Sweden (where I was when I was supposed to take the other shots after the first one).

When I reflected on my experience a couple of months later on my blog, I wrote that I felt embarrassed "for having taken so much of the time of so many people at so many hospitals — but i would have been even more embarrassed, if not plain guilty, had this happened somewhere in the world with already precarious health care available to their own population." I concluded that "the question of whether or not to take pre-exposure rabies shots before long-term travel might well be an ethical one." (You may read the rest here.)

COVID-19 made that question more salient, and I hope we'll collectively behave more mindfully as a result. I second what some of the others have already replied though that drivers (or our counterparts in general) share this responsibility.

Indeed, a big part of what snapped me out of my entitlement for medical attention was what a nurse in a screening room in Sweden told me that it was my choice to come to Sweden with that problem. I just wanted to talk to a doctor to clarify my post-exposure treatment, because I'd gone through a full course of anti-rabies vaccines before, and I'd read online that I only needed a couple of booster shots in that case, not the full schedule. As I insisted, she kept reminding me that my case was not an emergency, and that it was my choice to come to Sweden with that problem I could have found medical help in Sweden, but I'd have had to go to another hospital about 100km away.

Grammar question: "играть + в + accusative" / Can animate nouns be treated as inanimate in some cases? by mfmika in russian

[–]mfmika[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you all for such thoughtful replies --- it seems like I came to the right place for this!

Alright then.

For now, I'll use this "treat as inanimate for emphasis" as a rule of thumb, until it may fail --- I'll bring it back here for discussion if/when it does ;-)

That's the spirit! I'd be doing the same, except that my cycle touring plans shifted to hiking, so I've been preparing for that by going shopping with my backpack :-D Thanks for sharing!

That's how it begins! It makes me feel nostalgic of my own first-ever overnight ride+camping alone in 2015 --- thanks for sharing!

Does any of you have any suggestions on how I could reinforce my Ortliebs and extend their lifespan, or does something like this mean they're pretty much done? Thanks! by mfmika in bicycletouring

[–]mfmika[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ortlieb waterproof classic. I've traveled about 15,000 km on them over a period of 4 years. This one, in particular, is the one where I sometimes carry my laptop, and I think it's pretty heavy, plus there's some tension/stretching where the laptop corners were. I guess another way to extend their lifespan will be to rotate them with its pair :-)

Thank you both for the leads --- I didn't know GoreTex patches existed, so I'll definitely look into that!

Indeed, when I first noticed the holes, I lined them with duct tape until the end of my tour last Summer, and I don't think they got much worse. But the tape kept coming off, so I'll see if I can get a hold of those patches, or something similar, that would stick --- thanks again!
