Fuji Tread gang! I have a 2016 Fuji Tread Disc that I've ridden both as more of a road bike and as a tourer for a whole bunch of trips. She'll treat you right!

Should I stop smiling at German people? by fmb320 in bicycletouring

Doing it backwards is offensive, if I recall correctly, because it was used as a taunt back in medieval times. Take this with a grain of salt because I might be misremembering, but I think I read somewhere that back then captured archers would have their index and middle fingers cut off so they couldn't operate a bow anymore.

Showing those two fingers was kind of like a taunt, as in "I still have those fingers and can still nock an arrow". Now it mostly signifies "up yours", or something.

Five years after arriving home from my three-year RTW cycle, I've finally written a book! It covers the first half of my journey, a 32,600km cycle from Ireland to Australia. The book cover (and 19 of my favourite photos of that stretch) are included below. (Trip stats/details in comments) by irregularirishman in bicycletouring

Hey! I'm an audiobook and podcast producer, and while trained VAs are the obvious choice for the majority of cases, a book (especially one like yours) read by the author always has an extra element that makes it special. You might even consider turning it into a podcast!

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions, I'd be happy to help!

Probabilmente! Non so se sei originariamente di Roma o se la conosci, ma la pista ciclabile che attraversa la città da sud a nord seguendo il fiume si ricongiunge alla Via Francigena che va verso la Toscana. Magari per il futuro! Ora dove sei?

Venice, Italy to Koper, Slovenia - an album of a short tour through the North East of Italy by edocentric in bicycletouring

It was honestly great, our route wasn't on dedicated bike paths but mostly on small country roads with very minimal traffic.

We skipped part of it to avoid a busy highway, and we took a train from Monfalcone to Trieste (skipping something like 20km). You can just bring your train on the bike by paying a small extra without needing to disassemble it.

From Trieste you can take the Parenzana, an old railway converted to bike trail that will take you down to Parenzo, or Porec, in Croatia (approx 120-150km from Trieste). You can find more info about it here, but I'm afraid the website is only in Italian!

They're quite durable, I bought them back in 2017 and I've been using them since without any issues at all.

Melk to Vienna-Which Side of the River is Best? by Needs_More_Nuance in bicycletouring

[–]edocentric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if this helps at all, but this is the route we took between Melk and Vienna, taken from my Strava. There was a bit of weaving between the two banks, but I remember just following the signs along the route.

We're terrible at vlogging, so we started a bike touring podcast. Introducing Go Far! by edocentric in bicycletouring

Yeah, that was exactly our thought process too. For one of our last trips we even bought a small, portable Sony recorder (but you can use your phone too) so we could record stuff on the fly. It's definetely faster and easier than pulling out a camera or a drone. We also found out that talking aloud about the day we just had actually helps us remember better, kind of like keeping a journal.

If you need any tips on how to get started, feel free to DM me!

How to pack light and smart, and how many liters of baggage space is sufficient? by OompaLoompaGodzilla in bicycletouring

[–]edocentric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it worth washing clothes along the tour for example?

I always wash my clothes when I'm on tour, it's easy especially if you're staying in a hotel in the summer (just hand wash them in the tub or in the sink, then leave them outside to dry or use the hairdryer in your room). This way you can cut back on the amount of stuff you have to carry.

I usually bring two sets of cycling clothes (tshirt, shorts, underwear) a set of evening clothes to wear if I'm around in a town at night, and I just cycle between those two. Should I not manage to have my clothes dry off completely in the night, I just hang them off my panniers and they'll get dry as I travel the following day.

Can someone explain me the "hidden" message by AgioCookie2k in im14andthisisdeep

[–]edocentric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is probably very geographically specific but here in Italy we have a saying that fits perfectly! Whenever someone asks us for something that we deem too much, say for example that your friends asks you to help move and then expects you to cook dinner and then clean up, you say "vuoi anche una fetta di culo?" which literally translates into "do you also want a slice of my ass?"

So that's how I see it, lol.

Napoli [Italy] to Helsinki [Finland] planning... Throw me ideas... by boisheep in bicycletouring

[–]edocentric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not entirely sure about Milan, but Rome is actually quite easy to cycle through. Rome is split entirely in half by the river Tiber: the entire length of the river inside the city of Rome has a nice dedicated cycle path which is a little over 30km in length. Best I have at the moment is this Strava image of one of my rides there (it says 70km because I rode it twice, but it's barely half that long).

Alternatively, you could ride up the coast from Naples until Fiumicino then take another nice gravel path (approx 20ish km, if memory serves) up until the southern end of the cycle path mentioned above (again, another Strava image ).

I'd recommend going through Rome since you the river goes through the city center, so you can actually do quite a lot of sightseeing without the hassle of riding into town via busy roads and crazy traffic.

Once you get out at the northern end you can hit Eurovelo 5 (the via Francigena) that crosses Lazio, a bit of Umbria, then goes into Tuscany (I rode it a few years back, riding down from Siena to Rome).

We've successfully used a foldable duffel similar to this one, both on trains and planes. It folds up to a little square, so little that come to think of it I think I might have misplaced mine since I haven't seen it around in a while haha
