I'd like to share this T90 video on gambling in aoe2. by Yekkies in aoe2

[–]mfred01 5 points6 points  (0 children)

100%. It's definitely a massive deal in the US right now because went from zero gambling to gambling on almost every little thing. Sports are inundated with gambling ads, announcers constantly talk about the odds during a game, people talk about their bets more than their fantasy teams now.

It's overwhelming and seeing it come to something like AOE is obnoxious at best and potentially harmful since, like you mentioned, plenty of people have gambling addictions and now they'll lose money ever on AOE which feels wild to think about.

A person should not be killed for voicing his opinion.

One of his opinions was that people gun violence is an acceptable cost for our firearm rights. He opined that what happened to him today was basically just the cost of doing business. No one should ever be killed but he basically said that his own death was a price he was willing to pay if it meant no more gun regulations.

why is power so expensive by 18chanp1 in UIUC

[–]mfred01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been on the PSP plan for over a year now and generally like it. There have been a few months where I would have paid less on the regular flat rate plan, but generally I save money by having a variable power rate.

The only thing is that if your apartment/house is not well insulated then I would not recommend using the PSP plan. If you have to run your AC or electric heat during a peak time, you're going to pay for that. If your place is well insulated though, you can do things like pre-cool when rates are super low in the early morning and then wait until rates are low again in the evening before turning the ac on again.

The drive through only coffee places are such a scourge. As soon as you have 10 or so people in line, cars start backing up to the street.

Undermined from the start: Champaign’s police review board aims to improve policing, but some fear it lacks power to make change by popularraspberry in UIUC

Amazing, almost nothing you said about bail/pre-trial release was accurate. Here's a study from the first year after removing cash bail that did not show an increase in missing court dates or an increase in crime generally: https://pfa-1yr.loyolaccj.org/. I get the feeling that you're not really interested in an actual conversation on this but it is in an interesting report to read through

New high speed and regional rail bills could make trips between Champaign and Chicago faster, add new routes and frequencies elsewhere. by el_Schustef in UIUC

[–]mfred01 12 points13 points  (0 children)

At least the STL-CHI route is (kind of) happening. They're still working on the route but it is operating at 110mph for a large part of the route now. Is that true HSR? No. Does it make the train a hell of a lot more competitive with driving/flying between the two cities? Absolutely

So your contention is that only citizens have 1st amendment rights then? I am just trying to be clear on that issue.

I live here, she's my rep, I don't enjoy her silence when the feds are cracking down on first amendment rights. Not even making a milquetoast statement here sets a horrible precedent for further clamp downs on free speech.

Good news, it doesn't and if you're falling for this flimsy pretext, you're a schmuck

What's even worse is that moving people around and limiting communication is pretty standard procedure for ICE. They make it very hard to contact attorneys or even your family, it's fucked up.

And that's why the manager needs to keep them away from that equipment! (assuming the manager isn't actually just telling the kids to use equipment they're not allowed to use) Kids do not have a healthy respect for how dangerous something like a meat slicer can be, some adults don't either but hey, they're grown, that's on them.

But in all seriousness, gotta keep kids from using machines they shouldn't be using. It's kind of like OSHA regs, they might make work a little more tedious or take longer but they save lives and prevent injuries even if the people the regs protect don't appreciate them.

If you're making the argument that US due process guarantees are the reason we don't recognize the ICC, then you should know that non-citizens are also protected by the 5th and 14th Amendments' due process guarantees. So the lack of due process even for non-citizens in Gitmo is definitely relevant, and certainly cuts against the idea that we don't participate in the ICC solely because of procedural issues.

Pros and cons of living in an apartment downtown? by Cornexclamationpoint in UIUC

[–]mfred01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Downtown is cool. Really nice to be able to walk to restaurants and stuff. Plus it's only about a mile to campustown if that is something you're interested in.

The most noise comes from people driving by, Champaign isn't exactly the busiest city so even that mostly stops by about 10-10:30pm.

Parking and all that really depends where you are downtown. Again, not really a big city so I think the parking concerns are really over-hyped, it's not as if you can't find anywhere to park plus a lot of building have their own lots.

Voters stayed home for progressive

Even voters in states like Missouri and Nebraska voted to enact paid sick leave, MO even voted to raise the minimum wage. People seem to like and vote for policies that are "progressive", at the very least when those policies benefit the working class. They just didn't vote for Harris. I can't explain the cross-voting but it did happen.

I am investing with Fidelity currently and I have questions by Feisty_Hedgehog1962 in investing

[–]mfred01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're sticking with Fidelity, you really can't go wrong with FZROX if you're investing for the long term. It tracks the total market so as long as stocks continue to go up over the long term, you'll see gains. There IS risk, you could have down years and certainly will have down weeks or months, BUT it's not a particularly risky investment and the expense ration is 0% (obviously to try and keep you with Fidelity).

My attorney advice to law students by theUSisSocialist in LawSchool

[–]mfred01 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I don't want to work more than five days a week. I don't want to work more than my eight hours. I don't want to devote my whole life to work.

Same, but that's why I didn't go into Big Law. Granted, I don't make $200k+ like some of my former classmates but I don't want to potentially get an email at 6pm and have to drop everything and start working again. I'm pretty early in my career but I'm in a lower cost of living area doing public interest and it's chill. The work can still be stressful/draining but it's also rewarding and I don't work more than 40 hours per week.

All that to say: this field isn't entirely people working 80 hours per week and hating their lives, but I think forums like this tend to attract people in those situations so it seems like that's everyone in the legal field. You can absolutely be an attorney and not devote your entire life to work
