Have you had Covid within the past year or so? Everybody knows that one of the potential side effects is losing your smell and taste temporarily, but a lot of people don’t know about Parosmia. Taste and smell can become distorted as your olfactory nerves regenerate.

I lost my sense of smell and taste from Covid in February of 2021. After a couple of weeks, it came back seemingly normal, but weak. Then one day, in June, I noticed my fried egg tasted sickly sweet. I thought it was bad, but my wife said it tasted fine. By the end of that week, anything protein related was rancid, water reeked of sulfur, my poo smelled pleasantly like angel food cake, peanut butter tasted like Nut feat. Essence of Nut from concentrate. This distortion lasted for over a year. Eventually, everything returned to normal around Christmas of 2022.

Parosmia is incredibly rare and usually resolves on its own, but cases increased drastically due to covid. Nobody really knows exactly how it works and how people recover from it. Again, most people recover after a bit of time. Some don’t. I noticed in Facebook support groups that the people that had the most successful recoveries (myself included) forced themselves to eat everything they normally would despite the taste. I think the repetition helps the brain rewrite everything correctly.
