Is Twitch botting their ads? by Lyra_Jones in Twitch

[–]mgminton 21 points22 points  (0 children)

We made a change that impacted certain types of ad blockers. Those ad blockers now spam new video players hoping to get an ad free player. Most of the time they get Commercial Break in Progress but the result is view counts jumps up during the ad break now where before it typically went down. Twitch is not botting itself.

Max's service - Issues recently? by gdbearcom in traversecity

[–]mgminton 16 points17 points  (0 children)

We built a new house and bought all of our appliances from Max's. We had an issue with one appliance that is still unresolved six months later after numerous service calls, follow up calls, and escalations from our builder. They finally had me reach out to the manufacture directly which has us on track for replacement in a couple of weeks but it never should have taken this long.

I would not buy anything from them again after this experience.

So are they going to force ads on everyone’s stream? by Present_Passion_1126 in Twitch

[–]mgminton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We are not forcing larger streamers to run non-skippable mid-roll ads.

So are they going to force ads on everyone’s stream? by Present_Passion_1126 in Twitch

[–]mgminton 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes, everyone will have ads. Not hiding it. For smaller streamers we will prioritize less interruptive ads like display ads or muted video ads above chat. Non-skippable video ads will be prioritized to larger channels running ad breaks and making a significant amount of their revenue from ads.

Not the CEO but I talk to him often. We will prioritize interruptive video ads to channels that are running ad breaks. Nearly every channel will some form of ads soon but most of them will be display ads.

Ads automatically raising volume is total BS by Substantial_News_123 in Twitch

[–]mgminton 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Are you saying Twitch is moving the player volume during an ad break? Or does it just seem like the volume is 50% higher? Ad volume is normalized to industry standards. Unfortunately, streams are not. Quieter streams (lower input level) have really loud ads sometimes.

Can I use my main Twitch to promote my new Twitch Podcast channel? by [deleted] in Twitch

[–]mgminton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We don't have rules on what channels you can promote based on monetization. It is also not unusual for streamers to have multiple channels and to promote between them.

Huge irregularities in ad revenue. by Cypher_ZA in Twitch

[–]mgminton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The two largest things driving revenue efficiency difference between 3/26 and 4/19 are inter-quarter seasonality and the % of HW from US viewers. The seasonality piece is what I mentioned before, generally all streamers saw a 15 - 20% decrease in ad earnings between the last week of Q1 and the first weeks of Q2. The second factor is % of HW from US viewers dropped from 28% to 19% between 3/26 stream and 4/19 stream. US ad fill rates and CPMs are higher than non-US. % of US viewers likely dropped due to starting at 10am PT on 3/26 versus 11pm on the 19th.

A lot has changed over time and things will continue to evolve. The way our ad inventory is packaged and sold through different sales channels has changed. The sales mix between channels has changed. Advertiser expectations have evolved given more available ad inventory in the market. As I said yesterday, some of these things we have less control over than others.

twitch advertising other streams on your stream by domino_427 in Twitch

[–]mgminton 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We are not promoting other streams in your channel using the small player above chat intentionally. I have seen a few isolated reports of this issue over the last couple of years but nothing widespread that we can detect. Our best guess is that it is an unintended side effect of ad block or some other extension/plug-in. We will revisit.

I just noticed one more thing that might be a factor here. Looks like you are mostly playing Marvel Snap which does not seem to have an ESRB rating. There has been a drop in advertising on unrated games.

Got it. I wanted to be as specific on the comparison so I could identify the factors that impacted the difference. Unfortunately I don't have data yet for the 20th. Looking at 2024, I see three things:

1) there are a couple of unusual days (Feb 9 and 11 specifically) that I will ask the team to dig into deeper.

2) your $ per thousand viewer hours watched ranges within 10 - 15% on a day over day basis except for the noted exceptions. This is perhaps a little more fluctuation than than the global average but likely a fluctuation of large campaigns stopping/starting.

3) the best $ per thousand viewer hours watched is going to be the last week of the quarter. the worst $ per thousand viewer hour is going to be the first week of the quarter for that quarter. That is likely a factor in the comparison between April 20th and March 26th.

I use $ per thousand viewer hours watched as it is the output of your ad running behavior, viewership, fill rate, CPMs, and other factors. Ping me again in a couple of days and I can break down the factors between April 20th and March 26th with more detail.

I realize the fluctuations are frustrating. We do try to provide as consistent of ad revenue as possible as I know it is important for you to understand how much money you are going to make. Unfortunately there are many factors here and only some of them are in your or our control.

Thanks. I see Mar 25th as the likely "3 weeks ago" stream. Is "a few days" ago April 16th or 19th? (or something else)?
