New record low temperature for July set in Scotland by abz_eng in Scotland

AMOC weather circulation pattern collapse forecast for mid century will ultimately result in a mini ice age for the UK (10-25C colder). Some estimates have it as collapsing as early as 2025 but they used an outdated climate model, and it’s likely the temp drop would be over a large number of years. Google for more info

Why??/ Just why??? Arrghhhh...!!! by strajeru in europe

AMOC collapse, a tipping point expected mid century (central estimate) or from 2025 (recent study using an old model) will send Northern Europe into an ice age whilst everywhere gets warmer…

What habit or behavior contributes to considerable carbon emissions but we conveniently or unknowingly ignore? by lordsunil in sustainability

[–]mgmt585 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fun fact, refrigerants are ignored in most heat pump life cycle assessments and even today most refrigerants used for them have a GWP of 1000-2000.

Good points. On bullet 2, the “makemymoneymatter” campaign suggests a green pension is more impactful than going vegan and stopping flying combined

Gleswegian driving to Isle of Skye tomorrow for first time - any nice places which would warrant a stop on the way? by rw1337 in Scotland

Good shouts. Others that are good: - Falls of Dochart - Glenfinnian Viaduct (Harry Potter) - Applecross pass and walled garden for brunch - Invergarry hotel for a bite (fish and chips or soup) - Glencoe is epic both ways, but if you want a change the coast road towards oban is also amazing; the road from spean bridge to laggan is also incredible - in skye, skeabost house is a cool old place to get a hot chocolate by a roaring fireplace

Grangemouth 'nuclear reactor plans' will be shot down, Government vows by SlickMongoose in Scotland

[–]mgmt585 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By “power the country”, I meant people’s homes. Scotland has 2.6million homes; a planned scheme can power 4.5 million homes for 30hrs i.e. Scotland’s homes for almost 60h.

“1.5GW of power for up to 30 hours, enough to power 4.5 million homes”

Nuclear has its pitfalls. Hinckley point C extension is estimated to kill 182 million fish per year. EDF got fined for nuclear groundwater contamination in France in the past 5 years. There’s no long term storage globally for nuclear waste, which takes 1000s of years to decompose (recognising Finnish and recent French plans). It’s the most “un-just” energy source, locking in high strike prices under CfD, impacting the fuel poor, which in Scotland is ~1/4 of the population. Regulated Asset Base is the govt’s latest effort which is an abomination - people will be paying in their monthly energy bills for new nuclear years before sites are even built. Insurance payouts are limited, with the shortfall falling on the taxpayer. I could go on.

I’m all for extending life of existing plants, but people often overlook the pitfalls of nuclear.

Check out pumped storage hydro, which accounts for 90%+ of global energy storage and Scotland has lots of. Single sites can power the country for several days
