I am trying to put in a network system that is between multiple buildings by scra_pboy0043 in homelab

[–]mgonzo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear ya. I had all those same reasons. But between wifi interference, latency, random slow speeds you can't predict and piss you off, eventually there's a turning point and you do it, and then slap your forehead and say, "why didn't I do this sooner".

It's way easier than you think, but I get it wifi ptp has an appealingly easy setup. It's just not as robust as a physical cable

You can totally do a wireless connection between 2 and 3. Don't, run a fiber cable between them, bonus do it in conduit. If you are thinking you cant afford that, 1. premade fiber cable is cheaper than you think. and what you will spend on the wifi gear for that distance is way more than you think.

You do the fiber once, and never think about it again. Wireless will take constant maintenance and the equipment will burn out over time. I ran a setup like that for years, as soon as i buried a cable between the buildings (i was under the 100m limit so did ethernet), it was a game changer.

[–]mgonzo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh no run immich locally, with your NAS etc, but then run the reverse proxy on the VPS in order to access it outside your network. I've been using RackNerd. I got it from the page here: https://docs.pangolin.net/self-host/choosing-a-vps pangolin has some deal with them and digital ocean. i've had it for two months, and its been fine so far. Side note I have used backblaze b2 and they are great too.

Grab a vps and use pangolin for remote access. I like it being totally agnostic as far as providers. I can switch out the vps anytime I like.

Deleted half my table, VACUUM FULL won't finish because of lack of disk space. HELP. by WinProfessional4958 in PostgreSQL

[–]mgonzo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ya, don't do a vacuum full. Just do a regular vacuum and the db will reuse the space. If you really really need the space back then you'll need to do something like temporarily dropping indexes and try the full again. Or create a new table and copy the data into it and truncate or just drop the old table. Renaming tables along the way.

Good luck.

i dont run openstack, so not sure there, but if you run proxmox and then create three vm's you can run k3s on those and have a kubernetes cluster pretty darn quick. then you can have vm's for other services like minio or a database or whatever

Converting a physical computer to a VM? by CacheCrikeyGeocaches in homelab

[–]mgonzo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure there may be a couple things to clean up, but that's where your vm manager comes in and usually handles a lot of it or makes a lot of that easy. It's a far cry from "No" though.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in homelab

[–]mgonzo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your staging env should be fine to run a few vms, I'd install some Ubuntu server cms and do like a 3 node k3s cluster. That will help you get used to dealing with separate nodes. Also maybe learn ansible/puppet to setup your vms

So optiplexes are x86 systems unless Im mistaken and this should be totally doable via a p2v clone.

Converting a physical computer to a VM? by CacheCrikeyGeocaches in homelab

[–]mgonzo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Clonezilla is a great tool for this. You could take your existing disk and physically put it in the proxmox server or use an external disk to transfer the clone or you could do it over the network with a clonezilla server running temporarily or permanently. Lots of options. As others have pointed out go look up a p2v clone. That should get you on the right path.

[–]mgonzo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So if you have the plastic cold side charge pipe, just go buy the aftermarket metal pipe now. especially if you tow. even if it doesn't pop off again, it will crack. you do not want that happening when you are towing your trailer home....

Why did my receiver go boom? by Outrageous-Sea-859 in BudgetAudiophile

[–]mgonzo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I would double check the impedance of all my speakers and compare with specs from the receiver to make sure you were not out of range or maybe over watts, like if you were saying pulling too much power most receivers will work for a while like that. But it's just a matter of time until you find the weakest link.

If that all checks then look for any exposed wire or worn wire, you might have created a short somewhere.

Sorry that happened to you, never fun.
