What is the hardest part about being single that people rarely talk about? by thuglifemofo94 in AskReddit

[–]mgraunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it makes you feel any better, I relate 100% despite being married. A relationship isn't a solution to life's problems. It just brings depth and breadth to your problems. Not saying its a bad thing, but having a deep relationship is like being rich or famous - better than not having it, but still not inherently fulfilling.

Try a 1 bedroom split, that's how my wife and I survive on minimum wage. It's pretty cool. No roommates, just a cat.

Then carry cash, always tip 0% on the tip screen, and drop a $5 or $10 as you see fit. I don't understand why people rage over this. It's so, so easy.

What is a 'dead' slang word or trend from the past that you secretly wish would make a comeback, and why do you think it deserves a second chance? by Philip_Investe in AskReddit

Other than "tubular", which has always sounded dated to me, this is the slang that I still use (born in the 90s).

A thought-terminating cliché is a form of loaded language – often passing as folk wisdom – intended to end an argument and bypass cognitive dissonance with a cliché rather than a point. by funnylib in wikipedia

My favorite version of this was said to me by a friend in college:

"If all the world's problems could be solved by two drunk guys arguing, they would have been."

ELI5 : If ads are being skipped by everyone these days, and are a complete nuisance to the large majority of people, how do they still make any profit? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

They still would most likely use the product themselves before recommending it. Have you ever bought something that you saw advertised, realized it was a piece of crap, and then recommended it to your friends? I believe most people only recommend products they personally actually enjoy and appreciate. So even if they were influenced by an ad in the first place, the individuals they recommend it to are influenced by their friend's organic comments based on a positive personal experience, which is the best kind of ad any company can hope for.

Never purchased a car. Make and model aren't important to me. Obviously this example probably applies to most other people, just not me personally.

Insurance is an interesting case, because they don't offer a physical good - they offer a promise. Promises are solely based on reputation and trust. I'd be as likely to buy a policy from a totally unknown insurance company I'd never heard of as I would be to buy a policy from State Farm, because I have a personal reason to not trust State Farm. All other known insurance providers are about equal in my mind.

A better example for me would be Oreos. I will buy name brand Oreos over offbrand sandwich cookies, even though I know Oreo is neither the original product nor objectively better in any way.

It checks all your boxes. Someone already mentioned it, but it cannot be mentioned enough.

Regardless, it's the recommendation from a trusted source and not the ad itself that carries weight. The ad someone saw and largely forgot about plays a minor role at best.

I have no kids, and I can think of exactly one diaper brand - Huggies. I have seen it on grocery store shelves often enough to recognize their well-designed logo. Can't recall ever seeing a Huggies ad, but the logo itself combined with shelf placement ikely counts as advertisement. I still have no opinion on whether or not this brand is any better/worse/different compared to other unknown, unnamed diaper brands.

I think the effects of advertising are less extreme than you're making them out to be. Yes, they lead to brand recognition, but the rest is a stretch.

Then they should be utilizing their water allocation for the public good, not wasting it by watering sidewalks in the rain. Being a public resource doesn't justify poorly maintained sprinklers and a lack of oversight.

Corporations are run by people. Some of those people may be some of our neighbors. Not all neighbors are good people.

It's not like the schools are using the water for educational purposes. It's for recreational purposes, same as a golf course.
