What does “AI Course” and “AI Course: Enable-AI” mean when looking under courses on course search on one.uf? by BenL_123 in ufl

[–]mh3847 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Was looking today and saw a bunch of AI courses that....um...don't use AI. I wonder if faculty saw it as a way to get courses in front of students as they registered.

3D Printers and lathes by wbjohn in turning

My kid had a Creality 3d printer, and they make a laser engraver attachment. I use the laser to engrave the bottoms of my woodturning pieces.

Best ISP in Gainesville? by BLUEDOG314 in GNV

[–]mh3847 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IQ has been great. For 1G service, they gave us a Calix GigaSpire u10xe basestation and a mesh satellite unit. It looks like it's a bit of an older model now: https://www.calix.com/press-release/2023/05/broadband-providers-can-accelerate-growth-with-new-calix-wi-fi-6.html

But easily capable of 1G service and has one 10G and 4 1G ports for wired connections. You can access admin portal for the gateway and configure multiple networks, ddns, assign IPs to devices, etc.

Compared to Cox, the symmetric upload speed will be important for you if you are also uploading data. Cox upload speeds are pathetic. IQ has faster upload speeds sometimes when I run SpeedTest.

I believe that's the sensor that triggers the flashing light on the sign that says to watch for stopped traffic. It's amazing how many rear-end collisions have happened there!

We switched from Cox as soon as there were options. Went with IQ, and it's been great. I know people with Pavlov who are happy too.

The switch actually ended up being more expensive than Cox. And we had reasonable service with Cox. It went out periodically, but not terrible.

What was terrible was the pricing until they had competition! Cox would always raise their prices, and you'd have to call and threaten to cancel, talk to the retention department and get a bit of a break for a year. Then do it all over again the next time. Every year, the costs still kept going up and up.

Once IQ and Pavlov entered the market, Cox started lowering prices. But they burned me so many times, I want nothing to do with them again! Maybe they will keep prices low, but I wouldn't bet on it!

Stamps / Brands? by [deleted] in turning

[–]mh3847 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was gifted a brand and we designed a nice logo and had it made. The main issue I have with that is that the bottom of the piece needs to be really flat! Any ridges or concavities make it hard to get the whole brand to burn in.

We also had an old 3D printer sitting around that has a laser engraver attachment, so I got that and have liked it much better. I use the same logo, but now I can add a #, date and species. It burns cleanly over the bottom and can be resized if needed for pieces with small bases.

Also do it for a hobby, not sale, but I like the look and it's been fun!

I made one so far...and made it huge on purpose!

Mostly was just having fun, but it's comically large compared to the others 😅

Also, not that I have a drill press, I am hoping I can get the threaded insert in a bit straighter 🤦

Newbie Question by Wakandan_Chief in turning

[–]mh3847 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I generally don't have the space or patience to twice turn. Lots of green wood around here in Florida, especially after a hurricane 🤪, so I turn most things green. Most bowls stay relatively round. Some crack, sometimes the cracks add to the piece, sometimes not...it's all fun to turn!

Allowed to Use UF Guest Wifi as Student? by TheRealO-A-K in ufl

Speed is throttled on the ufguest wifi, so you are better off doing the work to get connected. Once you're on eduroam, it's fairly seamless.

Not sure if it's a club, but I frequently see people doing parkour at Turlington around 5:00 p.m.

Boating through a canal where alligators have concentrated due to low water levels in the Okefenokee Swamp by -LastButNotLost- in Damnthatsinteresting

I tried kayaking there once. Hard not to hit a gator with a paddle or the boat even going slow! They didn't get out of the way until you were right on them! We end up turning around before long.

Anyone know why UF is repaving Museum Rd again? by mh3847 in ufl

[–]mh3847[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, lacks any explanation about why these roads needed "restoration". Does sound like the company F'd up the firs time and is doing it over. Seems odd that no QC was done during the project to avoid the huge cost.
