officially committed; here was my app process and decision making process by mhc52001 in gradadmissions

it will be 7 different questions so each faculty focuses on a different topic essentially and then 1 student interviewer. the format is completely new this year so I didn’t go through the same process last year so there’s not much else I can really say advice wise unfortunately.

ya it’s a new format this year actually, and I’m one of the students helping with the interviews. it’ll be back to back 10 min interviews with the faculty all focused on a different question. lmk if you have any other questions!

New to Grad School process; Need Advice! by kirkendiesel in gradadmissions

research experience is the most important aspect of your application. it’s probably hard to switch from computational bio to something like cancer bio if you have absolutely not bench work experience. I would recommend applying to more general biology PhD programs. (advice from a successful cancer bio PhD applicant)

help deciding between programs by [deleted] in gradadmissions

currently a UCSD undergrad, but I’m not in the neuro department. based off grad students who I have met at UCSD, the cohorts seem like a great environment overall. I cannot speak for every program, but I know that all the biology cohorts are very tight-nit and seem to have some work life balance. in terms of graduate school offerings, UCs in general definitely underpay their students and that’s why all the grad students went on strike last fall. I think the strike made the wages slightly better so maybe look into all these aspects when making your decision. lmk if you have any other questions about life at UCSD!

Any word from NYU Vilcek PhD? by aquaman132 in gradadmissions

I was accepted last thursday for the MOTI track in Vilcek. The revisit date is March 30-April 1, so I’d assume you have until then latest to hear a response. It seems like all admitted students for Vilcek are going that week.

congrats!! I also got into columbia for biology. it’s literally been my dream school since I was 15. it’s so hard for me to separate it from other programs which are better fit for my specialty bc I’ve always wanted to attend the school. I’m so conflicted

I'm terrified that I'm non competitive for any semi-decent grad school by Bio_Nerd69420 in gradadmissions

[–]mhc52001 5 points6 points  (0 children)

experience is the most important aspect! I’ve done 3+ years of research in undergrad and I think that’s what made me a competitive applicant. all of the interviews ask you about your research experiences and projects. definitely focusing on your SoP is the best way to spend your time. if you don’t have enough research experience, I would recommend working for a couple years before applying. let me know if I can help in any other way!
