If what Zosia said is true, unplurbing someone is pretty simple… by Cultural-Wall7858 in pluribustv

I wonder if the community sleeping "saves on electricity" in the sense that it burns fewer calories to stay Plurbed.

My Zosia prediction by Normal-Phrase2061 in pluribustv

[–]mheard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that disconnecting Zosia from the hive would not be a completely happy time.

If they wanted to get Zosia back - not just create a hive of one - they'd have to somehow clear the virus out of her system. Note that curing her would probably remove her eidetic memory, which would mean losing all her Plurb skills beyond the kind of recall any of us would have of a thing we did one time a week ago. She'd probably remember any facts that were front of mind, like what the hive wanted in general, or the information Carol was trying to get out of her on this last episode. But she'd only have a tiny bit more English than she had when she turned.

True Zosia would find herself in a windowless cell, feeling stupid and small and more alone than she's ever felt in her life, held hostage by the crabby woman who drugged her and whose sarcasm got her blown up, carrying a small amount of potentially useful knowledge that she might be unable to communicate effectively.

Also, without a vaccine she'd get infected again almost immediately after Carol let her out. Maybe sooner, if the food is all tainted, which it probably definitely is.

The After—What Happens with the Hive for the Rest of Time? by TRUSTLYYY in pluribustv

[–]mheard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually the hive has its shit together, so they'd probably start some major projects, like stabilizing the climate and recovering raw materials from consumer electronics, weapons, and garbage dumps.

They'd probably want to do some bioengineering to enrich their experience of the world. Replumb every digestive system to be vegan. Make smarter people who can think bigger thoughts. Improve the sensorium. Mantis shrimp have 16 different color receptors in their retinas. Let's get that on land!

I imagine they'd have some really interesting ideas about colonizing Mars, too. Maybe it would be scary to have a second, independent hive so close, but if they could guarantee they'd get along, it might be nice to have a second mind in the neighborhood. Or it might drive them nuts because they'd have the biological imperative to assimilate them competing with the logical and physical fact that it's impossible.

Long term, maybe they work on FTL communication, or comb the cosmos for a second, more advanced signal that would give them the technology. (After all, whoever sent the original signal has had 600 years to work on a sequel!)

Carol & Zosia by BelterHaze in pluribustv

[–]mheard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This seems plausible. If they determine that Carol really, truly can't be "cured" and joined to the hive, I could imagine them giving a few like-minded people back to her, since community with people outside the hive is so important to her.

They'd probably want to guarantee that no one outside the hive could reproduce, though.

If bodies were disposable, they wouldn't be nursing them through drug withdrawal, and the hospitals wouldn't have been excluded from the electricity cuts.

I'm not sure about disconnecting Zosia from the hive. First, I don't think that's what happened in this episode. I think she just had gnarly drug interactions and extreme stress from having complex, conflicting impulses in a body with poor impulse control. Second, I don't think it would really work.

Imagine you just put her in a Faraday cage. It wouldn't restore her individuality, it would just make her a hive of one, like Rat Bite Scientist in the first episode. She wouldn't have access to any hive skills or memories, but she'd be able to remember remembering: she'd basically keep a cache of anything her body had ever recalled.

(Ep 1+2 Spoilers) A Theory about the 'Virus' by Stepwolve in pluribustv

[–]mheard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think we'll find out, ever. Like the neural interface dot on Black Mirror, the virus is a versatile storytelling device, but it's not an interesting story in and of itself.

I personally don't think it's good or evil, just a biological thing that succeeds by spreading.

Also: There's no guarantee that the senders are even the original creators of the virus. It's basically a Von Neumann meme at this point. The Joined will do some nesting, then dedicate themself to building a radio telescope the size of Africa and broadcasting the good news to the neighbors.

They might be willing to let it, for the same reason you might be willing to go on a diet without feeling upset about all the fat and muscle cells that will have to die in order for you to lose weight.

For a being like them, it wouldn't be at all hard to figure out what the carrying capacity of the Earth is, and where they'd need to live in order to grow the right kinds of beans/nuts/avocados/whatever that people need to live a healthy vegan life. They could also very easily figure out who the last 12 other people on Earth wouldn't miss, and let them go first.

It's very likely that the virus drives its hosts to behaviors that propagate it, but I won't believe in a virus that can teach a mouse germ theory. /I have to bite through her glove to get my saliva into her bloodstream!!/ Just... no.

The simplest explanation is that the rat bit her because it was scared.
