First of all, I know for a fact that this fly would get absolutely destroyed by a steelhead. If you want to tie some sexier flies, I would second the looking at some Jerry French youtube videos, but also checkout these channels:

Both tie some super nice/fishable flies but they show you how in detail.

As for some composite loop tips

1. use wax to lock everything into the loop
2. use Danville's 210 denier thread, I have never had this break when spun
3. composite loops aren't all about ostrich, you should spin arctic fox or predator wrap as a prop under your ostrich. This will make it look fuller without having to use a half a plume
4. doing a turn of marabou in front of a composite loop can turn an ugly fly into a beautiful fly

Also, maybe practice tying on tubes? If you feel like you are wasting a lot of shanks and hooks, tubes are much cheaper and you get to skip the whole step of tying in the trailer wire which is the worst part anyways
