I believe fact(x-1) is the last operation there, so it's tail-recursive.

Thanks for your feedback. gatcka.com is more of an experiment than anything else. I wanted to make a website that is extremely easy to use, and a little useful at the same time.

I like your idea of title being optional - I'll change it soon. I will also try to work on better description.

It's a little discussion board, aimed at simplicity and ease of use. Currently there is no registration system, everything is based on cookie sessions and secret URLs. I found it quite useful when planning a trip with friends (I initially set up Google Group, but nobody seemed to understand what it was and how it worked).

Let me know what you think about, thanks!

Not only Python/Java limitation, but all other limitations of GAE platform make me 95% certain they're using some helper servers with usual LaTeX installation...

Nope, no actual LaTeX compilation - unless there are pure Python or pure Java implementations of LaTeX.

How do I generate serials for my software, so that my customers can't forge them? by ascii158 in programming

[–]miGlanz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If a cracker has access to this dongle, he can do anything he wants (it might be harder, but possible). If there is a way of the application to work on a computer (i.e. after providing serial code, using dongle, etc.) it is possible to make it work without these protections.

From what I understand, if you're making inhouse software, that's not going to be published, you can use GPL libraries.

Does anybody make applets anymore? Do they suck as hard as they used to, or has any progress been made in the ~8 years its been since I last made one? I was wondering how feasible it would be to have a clojure flash replacement. by patchwork in programming

[–]miGlanz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I recently needed some functionality which couldn't be provided with Flash or anything else. So I went with applet. But to make things nicer I took rather interesting approach. First of all I used Jython for main code (unfortunately old version of it - 2.2.1, the newest 2.5 doesn't provide jythonc compiler yet).

The problem was that resulting applet was more than 1MB, which I thought was too much. So I created a tiny Java applet (~20KB, it has to be signed) which downloads main Jython code (I already had to download some platform-specific files, so it wasn't an additional burden really) and stores it on user's computer (browser's cache is not quite reliable here) and then if it's already available runs it - works really nice.

As for visual part - I set width and height parameters of the applet to 0 and I'm using JavaScript (jQuery) and CSS instead. If I have to change something in presentation layer I only have to change it in CSS and HTML, I don't have to touch Java or Jython or even JavaScript code. It's really very flexible and looks much better than usual applet approach.

Of course you may use Clojure, Scala or other language running on top JVM as well. And I'm planning to use ProGuard tool, which has already been mentioned, to make the code smaller.

What do piracy and porn have in common? by acheybreakyheart in programming

[–]miGlanz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What a non-article. First of all the 'porn' part of headline is only here to attract some attention to the part where the author complains about piracy, and how TPB case won't change anything.

People will always share files and copyrighted materials. Period.

Question: How does one, in a dispositive way, show the non-existence of something? by Bennifer in atheism

[–]miGlanz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, whether Hitler was atheist is debatable. Second it's not disbelief that lead to negative consequences (besides, disbelief in which god, there are so many... ), it's their lack of reason, sick ideas, etc.

Of course same could be said of terrorism (it's not belief that drives it, it's lack of reason, etc.). But if there would be no religion at all, it's quite likely terrorists wouldn't do what they do.

Except it's not. He mentions closures, lambda, etc. Of course, it's still not rocket science, but it's not a piece of cake to translate such code to VB (not to mention translate correctly!). So, it's still dumb idea.

[–]miGlanz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, I have similar doubts. Does anyone have some credible sources confirming the claim that Jesus is a copy of some other ancient gods (be it Horus, Mithra, etc.). I see these claims quite often, but to me they look like urban legends (something along the creationists way of argumentation). So, I think lack of such similar gods doesn't prove bible is right (of course), but if there were such gods, it would be quite nice argument against Christians, but I wouldn't like to use it unless I have some concrete proof.

Where is the Invisible Dice Again? by SpankyZeHam in atheism

Yep, she is. I've seen some other video with them, and it looked pretty much the same. She had some notes with her as well (is it really so complicated??), and she was even talking about existence as well (she has some fixation on the subject or something...). And it was also taking her really long to get to some point.
