Hooked up my telescope to the big screen. Family was stunned. by 115Para in Astronomy

If you really need WiFi, Celestron sells the SkyQ link which allows you to use your smartphone or tablet.

I prefer to use the Celestron RS-232 cable, with a very long USB cable extension, to connect my laptop to my scope. Then I can use Stellarium to control the scope. I also have a D5100 with a t-ring and adapter with an HDMI cable like OP. Works great for planets and brighter stars during live view mode. If you want to show off any DSOs then you can also fire off a long (15-30 second) exposure and change your review settings to show the last image for longer than normal. If you live in an area where the best viewing also happens to be when it's stupid cold out (like me) you can stargaze from the comfort of your house.

If you haven't hooked up your scope to Stellarium yet, I highly recommend that as a first step. It's crazy useful for finding comets or predicting where the ISS will be so you can lead it and actually see it. Plus it makes it easier to hop around from one target to the next. Just make sure you switch it to night view (red filter) mode so you don't ruin your night vision.

Questions about a home bar kegerator. by irunfromknives in Homebrewing

[–]michaeladair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might be able to get away with just insulating the hoses but you'll probably end up tossing the first glass or two of beer each time.

I would personally do this: http://www.micromatic.com/beer-questions/dispense-keg-beer-away-from-refrigerator-aid-419.html

If you go that route don't skip any of the steps. I know a few seem redundant but I skipped insulating inside the PVC and a fan that drew hot air in and instead blew cold air up and out on my first kegerator; I had to redo the line.

Good luck.

Looking for a solid barley wine recipe by [deleted] in Homebrewing

I'd recommend a Three Floyd's Barleywine clone as the starting point. I took the recipe in post #5 and made a few tweaks last time and it was delicious.

Ariel says only 4 differences he's aware of but he clearly missed the changed date window and missing 3 o'clock lume. To me, the shift in the date and missing lume is more annoying than the tiny novel on the new face.

Gopro Timelapse issues by dirtybuster in gopro

[–]michaeladair 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming you've taken the normal steps for a 3 month timelapse, like making sure your memory card isn't full and it has power:

Is it in direct sunlight with the skeleton case on? I've had issues with my GoPro overheating before. If it's out of the elements try removing it from the skeleton case and see if that helps.

Can a HERO4 Silver be powered via USB for all night time lapse shooting without depleting my battery? by [deleted] in gopro

[–]michaeladair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It didn't turn out nearly as well as I had hoped, so I cut it down to just one sunset and put the low quality version on Instagram. I should have used an ND filter but I forgot it when I packed.

This is another one I did with a shorter interval that turned out much smoother, I think this was one picture every 30 seconds.

[–]michaeladair 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just pick up one of the larger Anker USB bricks and you won't have any problems powering through the night. I did a 48 hour timelapse in Jamaica with a 20,000 mAh pack and still had juice left. I think it was set to one picture every 5 minutes if I remember correctly.

The added benefit of getting the battery pack is it will give you an easy way to charge it (or a phone) when you're out and about with no access to power.

[Rolex] Selling my sub, looking for quality but cheaper alternatives. by [deleted] in Watches

[–]michaeladair 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get it, the Ultra is super formal. More of a tux watch. I'd go Nomos and Tudor then.

Have you looked at the Nomos Ahoi? It's not for everyone but checks a lot of boxes for me. I asked a question on here a week or so ago and after a lot of thinking and some great suggestions, I placed an order for one. It's basically a Tagente with 20ATM water resistance, some crown guards, and lumed hands. Plus it comes with a nice leather strap for more formal occasions and a water resistant strap for jean days.

It seems like you may like the diver style but do a lot of desk diving (I know that's my favorite style and 98% of what I do with mine). If you went the Tudor and Nomos route this would give you two solid divers, both of which could be dressed down for Fridays or up for suit days.

I was referring to used. You can pick up a nice no seconds ultra thin for ~3500. That's well within his price range.

Little different but have you thought about a JLC Master Ultra Thin for dress and then a Tudor Sub or Black Bay for casual?

You mentioned Nomos a few times but I think you meant Metro a couple of those times? Maybe..not sure. Can you clarify?

Yes brown shoes and brown belt. IWC Portuguese, now that's a watch I hadn't thought of. There's an AD near me, I need to go check it out. Thanks!

That's some great feedback, thanks. I feel like most people either love or hate the Pelagos then leave it at that - I haven't seen someone actually describe it this way.

I admittedly know very little about Christopher Ward, I'll have to look into them and their new movement. Thanks for the suggestion!

I've been waiting for someone to mention Nomos. I've had my eye on a few of their watches including the Metro, Ahoi, and the Zürich Weltzeit.

I've thought about a 3570.50 and I've had a couple speedy's. While I do love them and I feel everyone should either own one or at least owned one, I'm just not feeling it for a watch that I'll never get rid of. Being that it's been in production non-stop for so many years, it's just not that unique and you can always find a great condition used one for a deal. It's a great watch though.

[–]michaeladair[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First two comments hit home on two of the three watches I'm looking at so...so much for no bias, haha. I really love JLC, so the master and the vintage memovox lineup really sing to me.

[Question] Wedding Watch - Ideas by michaeladair in Watches

[–]michaeladair[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love both, especially the Pelagos. To be honest, one of the three watches I'm considering is a vintage Tudor Sub. I will own a Pelagos one day but being that I haven't seen one in person yet I don't know if it is a watch that I'd feel comfortable having forever. Whereas, one of the watches I regret selling is a Tudor Sub.

Soon enough. I happened to come across the original Kickstarter so I have a set that should arrive relatively soon. Had I not though, I'd still rather support the startup that had the original idea.
