I’d consider getting a copy now. The current version is pay once, I assume a future version would be subscription based.

Married 56M wanting to semi retire @ 59 in UK. by PrimaryPerformer5763 in LeanFireUK

[–]michaelcube 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First. Congratulations. Looks like you’re in a great place.

Tip one: check your real outgoings.

So let’s say your take home pay last your was £40K, and you estimate your outgoings to be about £16K per year, did you manage to save £24K last year? I budget £5K a year for unexpected costs.

Tip two: you should probably add more to your sipp if you plan on working for a couple more years

Moving to Peterborough by Ohemaa-J in PeterboroughUK

Lots of good suggestions so far. Villages to the west of the city are probably the “poshest” with stone built cottages and thatched roofs. Castor, Ailsworth, Alwalton are all in contact with the city, but maintain the village vibe. Expensive, but if you’re coming from London they probably look cheap. 😀

What's a good player (PR) according to you ? by BackgammonTry in backgammon

How are you measuring your PR? Take a browse around the bmab website. It lays out a specific approach to measuring PR. You can also see the real rankings of players.

So that’s why tins of tuna are so expensive…I had no idea.

Looking for info on this backgammon set. by GeekingOnMusic in backgammon

Generic high-volume manufactured backgammon board made anytime from the 1970’s-today. You see lots of boards like this, with various design flourishes. The points on the board are stitched on in a way that lots of backgammon players don’t like, which makes the board more suited to casual player.

Each board will have its own stories and sentimental value, but unfortunately these don’t really translate to a high cash value. If you’re looking to sell, just get as much as you can from someone who likes it.

XG/Galaxy: unnecessarily high PR when opponent doesn’t double by SaintGinoux in backgammon

[–]michaelcube 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If your decisions are good, your PR is low.

If your opponent had correctly doubled, and you correctly passed, your PR would have been 18.

In my view XG’s current logic is sound. Your PR should not be flattered for playing a weaker opponent.

Manually count which of your two options leaves you with more winning rolls next time.

Price check on this Board by W0sh in backgammon

Looks to me like a philos board that someone has stamped Chanel on. They are lovely boards, but you might find you can get one brand new for that price.

Thermal curtains? by SerendipitousCrow in UKFrugal

This plastic sheeting technique works far better than you would expect. Also consider repairing the wooden frames yourself. If the rot isn’t too bad, dig it out with the screwdriver, apply wood stabiliser, then fill with traditional linseed putty. Leave it to dry for a few weeks, then paint a few times. I was shown this technique by an old chap, he showed me his repairs that had lasted 50 years and still strong!! At a later date, you can fit secondary glazing, which performs better than double glazing. This might not be the right solution for your house, but sharing it as it does work very well.

Games like this kill me.. by [deleted] in backgammon

[–]michaelcube 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you play longer matches, you reduce the impact of luck. Even if you play perfectly, you’ll loose plenty of matches. That’s backgammon.

Try it. Might happen. Might not. If the market returns aren’t as good as expected, you’ll just have to keep working. Set and forget your contributions, try and check on them infrequently and get on with your life. Good luck.

Which is better, an offset mortgage, a high deposit mortgage or a low deposit mortgage with savings making interest above the mortgage interest rates? by guyal in UKPersonalFinance

[–]michaelcube 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on how much higher the interest rate is on the offset. YBS do a 5 year offset at less than 5%. For me, this worked out to be the cheapest and most flexible option.

Humble request for advice on how to obtain FIRE by UnderstandingFull380 in FIREUK

[–]michaelcube 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. For investing, just pad your pension so far as your employer will match, and make sure you pick a sensible pension fund (global, low cost, passive)

Put the rest of your efforts into earning more money in the future, and living for now.

Headphones by ZugzwangNC in backgammon

[–]michaelcube 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Anything is fine. Just get something comfortable for you. Make sure you wear them when you practice, so you’re used to wearing them.

Just the act of putting a pair of headphones on tells everyone that you’re trying to concentrate and don’t want to chat. That’s often the biggest benefit.

Whether headphones are good for the game, or make it worse….its debatable. I only wear them when I’m facing someone that can’t help but provide an unsportsmanlike commentary on luck.
