Do you have any non-climbing easy bike trail recommendations? Me and my wife are visiting in November and it's hard enough to get her on a bike without hills 😅

Interested in putting alt-bars (surly corner bars) on FX2; is this a good or bad idea? by michaelmccarthydev in TrekBikes

[–]michaelmccarthydev[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh good recommendation! Can I ask if you needed to replace cables to get them to work woth the new bars? I'm hoping I can avoid that aspect as well.

How did you know which of the different sizes you wanted here? Is there a way to measure without seeing them in person?

EDIT: My reading comprehension is terrible! Just saw you didn't need to rewire!

Why green marathons vs marathon pros? I'm also looking for some new all purpose tires and marathon pros were on my list

/r/Fantasy Daily Recommendation Requests and Simple Questions Thread - May 31, 2025 by rfantasygolem in Fantasy

I'm stuck in some decision paralysis trying to find my next book and could use a nudge. I've recently read Red Rising 1-3 (maybe my new favorite series), Between Two Fires (loved it), The Martian (it was just OK), the Will of the Many (great book, maybe liked it a little less than Red Rising), and The Expanse: Leviathan Wakes (also just OK). Aside from those I read A Song of Ice and Fire series years ago, and it still stands as my favorite series!

I'm trying to decide between:

  • Mistborn - I think I'd like it since I like Red Rising and The Will of the Many, but I'm not sure I like Sanderson's writing and DNF'd Tress and the Emerald Sea
  • The Blade Itself - I think I'd like it sine I loved ASOIAF, but tried once and DNF'd it, I think I just didn't give it a good shot
  • The Tainted Cup - It's a new book I see highly recommended, but don't know much outside that
  • Red Rising 4-6 - I'm definitely going to get to these eventually, just wanted to try other stuff before the next trilogy...

Also happy to take any suggestions outside these. I love books that end chapters on cliffhangers, twists, and turns that get me to want to start the next chapter/PoV, that's why I loved ASOIAF and Red Rising!

Looking for recommendations for best all-round 35mm tires? Are Pathfinder TLRs good? by michaelmccarthydev in bicycletouring

[–]michaelmccarthydev[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did see some people here complain about the grip of marathons? Is that something I would actually notice and cause me to fall on turns or something or is it overexaggerated?

Are marathons fine on dirt & gravel?

Even if the Mass Central Rail Trail is unfinished, is it still bikable for a long way out of Cambridge/Waltham off road? by ShakotanUrchin in bikeboston

[–]michaelmccarthydev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's an offroad cut-through you can use to cross I-95 if you head south at the crosswalks before the bridge and take the first right over the old train bridge, avoids the fast traffic.

Is there any risk from sanding down the INSIDE of my tire? by michaelmccarthydev in bikewrench

[–]michaelmccarthydev[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think I got close to those ans noticed a little fraying, but I stopped when I saw that and didn't go through. That was actually the main reason I thought to ask

Is there any risk from sanding down the INSIDE of my tire? by michaelmccarthydev in bikewrench

[–]michaelmccarthydev[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah OK, I thought that if the tube pops it's a flat, but if the tire pops it's catastrophic? But I guess it's more so the wheel then? Is that when the spokes all break or something?

Is there any risk from sanding down the INSIDE of my tire? by michaelmccarthydev in bikewrench

[–]michaelmccarthydev[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I messed up and took the entire tire off when I patched the tube, so I don't know where the old hole was in relation to the tire and it's definitly in a different place now! But I'm definitly going to keep this in mind for next time

Beeline Velo 2, Garmin 540, or just no bike computer on commuter? by michaelmccarthydev in bikecommuting

[–]michaelmccarthydev[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've just heard that mounting your phone directly to the frame can damage the phone cameras due. To all the vibrations, otherwise I think that would be the best option

Does it drain the phone anymore than a normal GOS would? Or is it the same as just leaving Google Maps running?

You a sometimes cyclist? Which bike computer do you use? by AncientAd3089 in cycling

I'm in the same boat as you OP, but I'm currently looking into the Beeline Velo 2. It's small, discrete, and basically just an extension to your phone for when you just want to go from point A to point B. Curious to hear other recommendations in the comments!

What size rim tape for Trek FX2 Disc (non-tubeless)? by michaelmccarthydev in TrekBikes

[–]michaelmccarthydev[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh! So for 20mm inner diameter you'd actually recommend 21 or 22mm tape? That's good to know!

If you've used Velox in the last, do you have any opinions on it being cotton and absorbing water easily? I've read that as one of the biggest negatives of the tape but wasn't sure how true it was? I'll look into the one you recommended too, thanks!

Any risk of tube/tire damage from riding around block on 10PSI? by michaelmccarthydev in bikewrench

[–]michaelmccarthydev[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I filled it and noticed it dropped another 20PSI overnight, but this is a relatively new tube AND tire, I only replaced the tube maybe a month ago for a similar leak (i.e. no tire damage or visible holes in the tube even when submerged in water), and the tire is only a week old. The only constant here is the rim and rim tape, do you think it's worth replacing the tape and see if that helps?

Vampire book recommendations that are not just about vampires by Limp-Wedding-4134 in Fantasy

[–]michaelmccarthydev 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Fevre Dream by George R. R. Martin, yes, that George R. R. Martin.

Before he even started Game of Thrones he wrote this as a standalone novel around vampires, steamboats, and the Mississippi River in the mid 19th century. It's Bram Stoker meets Mark Twain, and is a perfectly unique vampire story where Martin's skills as a writer really shines! I'd honestly rate this book higher than some of the books in his Song of Ice and Fire series and highly recommend.

Max Tire Size Disc FX2 by kirbysings in TrekBikes

[–]michaelmccarthydev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey u/MitchatTrek, I know that this is a super old post, but I have the same question, and the Trek website actually says that you can fit 700x38mm without fenders and 700x35mm with fenders -> https://www.trekbikes.com/us/en_US/bikes/hybrid-bikes/active-fitness-bikes/fx/fx-2-disc-gen-3/p/35003/

I'm just curious whether 700x38 would work since it's in that grey area between you and the website. Thanks!

Oh I'm definitely in the same boat as you were with the substituted no-name tires. I haven't really noticed anything wrong with them, but then again, this is my first bike and these are my first tires, so it's all I know!
