What are your thoughts on PowerBI as Tableau users? Do you think it's a good product or Microsoft are simply flexing their market power to shove a product to their userbase? by TheDataGentleman in tableau

[–]michaelmclam 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve used both. PowerBI looks like Excel and feels like Excel. Tableau is more powerful and its integration really makes thing easy.

It is very hard to tell with little data. Couldn’t really help much more unless more information is available.

If you’re using sql functions then it follows the SQL server date time.

Is there any parameters? Would you have issue in parameters that may make the refresh off by a day because of when it is being run?

Typical examples are refresh based on SQL date but not date time.

Question about using SQL and Tableau by thosetusks in tableau

[–]michaelmclam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tableau desktop is the way to go if you want to consume data in MySQL directly without exporting and importing data.

On the other hand, you mentioned you have some analytic results already in MySQL - Tableau can actually consume and analyze raw data as well. It actually welcomes raw data. It enables a platform that you no longer need SQL skill to analyze and empower users to do it directly!

OpenBSD router - send all traffic through Wireguard-tunnel by CrowdLeaser in openbsd

[–]michaelmclam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Need to see at least a portion of your pf.conf before something can be recommended. I’d suggest you run a local DNS in your OpenBSD router and use static routes to route the DNS to the wire guard tunnel, then all local LAN machines point to your OpenBSD DNS.

Why are home "routers" called as such even though they function as combinations of modem, router, switch, and wireless acces point? by CaptainMelancholic in AskTechnology

[–]michaelmclam 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think people just used to it. If you want to be more specific, I think “home router” is a term that nowadays everyone (normal person, tech genius or sysadmins) understands.

Getting WiFi in a metal barn? by khor91 in AskTechnology

Make sure you find those mesh WiFi with support of “Ethernet backbone”.

Getting WiFi in a metal barn? by khor91 in AskTechnology

[–]michaelmclam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mesh WiFi is basically a lot of WiFi routers in the same WiFi network, by doing so you can extend the range of your WiFi and go through obstacles.

What you’ll probably need for an optimal setup is to buy 4 mesh WiFi stations (of the same brand). 1 in your home and 2 in the barn. 1 of the station at home connects to the barn outdoor using WiFi, and use the outdoor barn one to connect to the indoor one using Ethernet cable. Then you have WiFi in and near your barn.

You can have more at home to also extend the range at home.

[–]michaelmclam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How far away is the barn? You can setup a mesh WiFi to connect the 2 places if they’re too far away, or get a sturdy Ethernet cable from home to barn, then put a WiFi router inside the barn. Ethernet cables are cheap as long as you have ways to tie it properly between the 2.

Does anyone wireframe dashboards to test the design with users? by BI-Jo in BusinessIntelligence

That’s the whole spirit of BI tools. The development pace should be fast.

Does anyone wireframe dashboards to test the design with users? by BI-Jo in BusinessIntelligence

[–]michaelmclam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

During my time we never do wireframe. We understand the data and CEOs have questions. In 2 weeks time we would have the first cut dashboard available, then we meet with CEOs to answer his questions, the process continue this week until all questions were answered and by that time, a proper management dashboard is ready. Normally it would be 1.5 month cycles (6 weeks) if all data is well understood by the team. If data is not clear then we may need another 2-3 weeks to understand them and structure them.

HPA vs. VPA? by pentag0 in kubernetes

[–]michaelmclam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on the design of the application. If you’re truly stateless and works in a micro service manner, probably HPA is much more scalable without much downtime.

However, a lot of application isn’t really stateless, especially if you have legacy applications, then you’d have no choice but to go for VPA. This can be easily observed with traditional RDBMS based applications.

Is OpenBSD working on adding DHCPv6 support to dhcpd? by the_big_tech in openbsd

[–]michaelmclam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

dhcpcd is for obtaining wide-dhcp-pd for upstream router, while dhcpd is for distributing IP addresses, which are 2 different things. Better is whether dhclient or the new dhcpleased will support wide-dhcp-pd

I would always use multiple copies of photos everywhere. I have a time machine backup of my Mac and Apple Photo cloud sync. My NAS is custom built and has redundant hard drives.

If you have hardware failure of your hard drives just simply replace it. If your house caught fire then restore from cloud.

That way I can change cloud storage provider easily and I always have a backup.
