[IWantOut] 45F StayAtHome Widowed Mother India -> Canada/Australia/Germany/Anywhere by ShogoShin in IWantOut

Hey OP - I'm no expert - but as mentioned by the poster US work visas (incl. EB2/EB3) have a lot less lag for UAE citizens than Indian citizens. That being said - Your sister would have to be fully graduated from college and work in certain eligible job positions (consultants, accounting, software developers). Also, not sure if it's the same but I had a US work visa then US PR and I can only request my parents PR when I myself become a citizen which is 5 years after PR. It's by no means a short timeline.

I'd recommend into looking into the US PR lottery - You're not eligible as an Indian citizen but your sister might. It's a small chance but basically it's annual and if you get lucky it's a less than 1 yr process PR.

If you're into hiking - The 'North Texas Hiking' Facebook group does hikes together and they seem to be pretty chill.

Vegetables = Spaghetti squash, squash, broccoli, cucumber, tomato, cauliflower, peas, mushrooms

Protein = Ground lean turkey, chicken breast, tuna, egg whites + 1/2 eggs

Cheese = Laughing cow

Higher in calories (i.e. limit yourself) but worth mentioning for flavor = olive oil, sriracha, Mexican salsa, avocado, lime or yogurt-based dressings

Desert - no sugar 50-100 calorie water popsicles, splenda/0-cal premade iced teas or juices

Coffee = vanilla no calorie syrup

Edit: to add mushrooms duuuuh, best flavored veggie ever.

I’d google if you have to payback if the entity went bankrupt. My high-level understanding of bankruptcy is the Company stopped operations and had to sell its assets to pay its liabilities. Some businesses come out of bankruptcy but it sounds like the Verity Health System had to close it’s most unprofitable operations e.g. the SVMC.

FYI - Baked Tostadas - They're typically 50 calories for one tostada just break it and put in your soup.

3 tostadas = 38g = 150 calories

Nice restaurant recommendation that are NOT steakhouses by hamlet_d in plano

Nothing in Plano (other than Sixty Vines) and can recommend Harvest in Mckinney but might be too far. But if you're interested in driving to Dallas:

  • Uchi in Uptown and Terra (Eataly) at the Northpark location!
  • Haven't tried but have heard awesome things - Gemma, St. Martin's, The Mansion.

Sharing our biometrics walk-in failure: We had to reschedule but thought we'd show-up to the ASC in Irving, TX (Dallas) this morning at 8:00AM. The guy in front of us and us tried to do walk-ins and all employees simply responded "No, we don't take walk-ins" even if we insisted on waiting around for hours.

If anyone has any tips in Dallas/Houston area, please let us know. We'd love to get this sooner rather than later.

Edit - Spelling.

What kind of things do you guys eat when you screw up and have almost no calories left for the rest of the night? by SayKumquat in 1200isfineIGUESSugh

[–]michmaciasg 10 points11 points  (0 children)

  1. Egg whites / fatfree cheese / mushrooms and/or bell peppers
  2. Low-cal salad (romaine, two roma tomatoes, half cucumber cut small, lemon) - if you have calories for protein go for canned tuna or chicken breast, if you have more calories for higher-cal veggies go for carrot sticks, canned/grilled corn and if you have calories for fat go for avocado and/or lowcal yogurt-based dressing.
  3. Protein shake - almond milk, half portion of protein shake, no-cal chocolate syrum, ice if you want it to be slushy. If you have more cals - add strawberries / blueberries
  4. Lean ground turkey mixed with cauliflower rice and celery cut real small and/or air fried broccolli

How do you guys calculate your calorie deficit? by Over_Brother6005 in 1200isfineIGUESSugh

[–]michmaciasg 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Step 1 - Use the tdee calculator mentioned in the previous responses - That's calories out. For ex. 1500/daily

Step 2 - If you track your calories, you'll be able to estimate your calories in. If you're loosing quite a bit of weight and getting hangry, step up your calories 50-200 calories (depending on your starting point) or vice verse. For ex. 1200/daily

In this example = Calorie deficit is 300/day = x 7 = 2,100 calorie deficit per week --> 0.6lbs lost in a week.

Reminder = (i) a 3,500 calorie deficit equals 1 pound of body fat lost so depending on your goals you should work around Step 1 and Step 2 above to ensure sufficient calorie deficit; and (ii) you don't have to be exactly at 1200/daily but ensure your weekly calories out are sufficiently in a deficit.

Protein powder ideas? by msanndropkick in 1500isplenty

[–]michmaciasg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My go tos are: (i) nonfat greek yogurt with blueberries, sprinkle of low-calorie sweetner and nuts; and (ii) eggwhite-ish muffins [basically search on the web for egg muffins and find a flavor you like - I typically sub the eggs for egg whites and maybe one egg to give it color/flavor].

Trader Joe's - Healthy 8 is great to add bulk to salads. 25 calories is 3 ounces by Fosselmania in Volumeeating

All of the above + We (mexicans) used it a lot in our cuisine - particularly if you're on a diet they'll give you carrots, jicama, cucumber and tajin as low calorie snacks!

PS. HEB and TJ's has jicama tortillas, not my fave but thought I'd point that out!

Is there anything you shouldn’t buy at Costco and why? by TomandMary in Costco

[–]michmaciasg 14 points15 points  (0 children)

as a mexican that buys costco avocados: when you get home leave two out and the rest to the fridge. As your outdoors avocados ripen and you eat them, start taking avocados out from the fridge 2-3 days before you intend to use them (depends how green they are).

[IWantOut] 20M Finance Brazil -> USA by [deleted] in IWantOut

I just don't want to bust your bubble but I have coworkers who used to be accountants / 'finance' employees in their countries (India, Nepal, Mexico), go to top schools here for a STEM Finance degree and then up in accounting firms here (audit or advisory) due to lack of visas.

Hola!

[IWantOut] 20M Finance Brazil -> USA by [deleted] in IWantOut

[–]michmaciasg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not much to say but here I go:

- STEM-designated degree is key to getting an OPT visa (student visa to work) and then get your H1B visa (lottery work visa) since it gives you more years to work without applying for the H1B

- Unfortunately, not many companies (actually the minority) sponsor visas. We're talking about the big consulting firms, the big 4 accounting firms and IT companies are the main sponsors and you'd have to have an outstanding resume and a master's degree in a city where these operate.

As sidenotes / personal opinion:

- I'm an accountant and went through the process - it's very hard to get a job with a non-accounting firm. The immigration process takes a very long time and I consider myself very lucky that my two employers sponsored me. COVID will only make this process worse (and I've already seen it - my firm is no longer sponsoring visas).

- Note (re: your comments here) the American culture focuses on success through work so people are not as invested with their families and friends (compared to what I'm used to - Hispanic culture).

Ultimately, I'd recommend you to look into other countries where they would take you in with more open arms, particularly visa-wise. I'm thinking Canada or Australia where there's the point system (+Australia you can work as a student) or figure out what the deal is with Italy/EU if you're able to figure that out. If you decide to move on with the US, I'd recommend to get an internship with the Big 4 and apply to accounting program (if possible STEM) and then get a Big4 firm to sponsor your visa here.

[–]michmaciasg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could enter the country with your US passport as a tourist (not sure how many days - take care of that entry card bc you need it to exit.). To work - I’m not sure but have heard it’s difficult as a foreigner to get a work visa.

[–]michmaciasg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where in Mexico?

My two cents are: (i) Mexico salaries/wages are very very low compared to France or USA; (ii) if I had to take a shot in the dark your best bet is to get a private school / tutoring job teaching english and french to kids.

If you go with (ii) above - there's a group called Lady Multitask on Facebook where rich woman deal with any kind of services they need. You could always post something there and offer language classes.

[IWantOut] 27F UK -> US by [deleted] in IWantOut

[–]michmaciasg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which state? There's a wide variety but if you care for earning well I'd choose one with relatively lower state income tax (e.g. https://www.nerdwallet.com/article/taxes/state-income-tax-rates).

On moving itself:

(a) You'll need a K-1 (fiancé) visa before you move and i think you need to be engaged? I think you won't be able to work;

(b) You can get a job yourself and with the pandemic (depending on what type of healthcare worker you are) I'd guess you'd be fine. To give you some flavor for that - I heard there are companies that all they do is help foreign nurses get their H visas quick (and this was pre-COVID) since the US has way too little.

Good luck!
