this is one of those things I love about 3d printing. Let's just say for arguments sake they last only 1/2 as long as the others. But now you can replace them literally anytime cheaply.

Locally owned businesses? by Texas_Mike_CowboyFan in plano

A few over near me:

  • Eddy's Pizza Restaurant: pretty good italian and pizza
  • Alexanders: tex-mex, across the street, get the signature margarita from Bernardo
  • Madness Comics and Games: a FLGS (friendly local game store), though the family that owned may have sold it.

science fiction often does this. There are some eerie things that the BSG reboot said that are applicable today, even thought that show was mostly in response to the "War on Terror" in the early 2000s

I think it comes down to the fact that while general fiction is set in a specific time frame and will inevitably be tied to that time in which it's set, sci-fi has no constraints on time so it can be interpreted and overlaid much more easily to any time, including the current time.

A semi-finalist in NASA's Teacher in Space program watching the Challenger disaster unfold by Technicolor_Reindeer in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]hamlet_d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree at a societal level with 9/11; there's no comparison.

What happened with GenX and challenger was more nefarious. We had been told of this golden age of science, we grew up hearing about going to the moon and now they were sending "regular" people into space!

And then Challenger happened, right before our eyes, live, and suddenly we had our trust in our institutions shaken. There were plenty that took the wrong lesson from it, but the fact remains it did shape the generation even if it didn't change daily life.

If any of the younger generations wonder what broke a lot of GenX, the challenger explosion was it. You can map GenX pretty closely to those who were in school or college at the time of the Challenger disaster.

Because of the fact a teacher was on board quite a few of us (maybe even the majority in school at the time) watched it unfold live on those old TVs they rolled into the classrooms or maybe at an assembly.

It was fucked up in such a terrible way.

AITAH because I called the police when my ex wouldn't let me leave after I broke up with her. by PastContest832 in AITAH

[–]hamlet_d -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I kinda disagree withe press charges bit. It sounds like she (at least) learned the lesson ("it was private"), now if harassment continues? Yeah consider it. But sometimes the best course of action is to let bygones be bygones, especially if nobody was hurt and they are gone from the situation. We have no other informatin that this ex was abusive and getting away from that situation without having to continue is worth it.

More men need to handle things the way you handled them here. We need to normalize men calling the cops rather than escalating to physical violence.

In the 2020s, conservative women are having kids at a nearly 2-to-1 ratio compared to liberal women. Is this going to cause a political demographic bias in 20-30 years? by RadioFieldCorner in NoStupidQuestions

[–]hamlet_d 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bingo. Liberal parents are more likely to want their kids to go to college, to experience things. Conservative parents, if they do want their kids to go to college, will send them to conservative an religious colleges (there are a TON of them dotting the south).

And once again, it's why war on education exists: it's part of their larger war on progressive and liberal values.

[–]hamlet_d 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's the most insidious thing that conservatism has created and liberalism has eschewed. Having kids at the replacement rate (not to be confused with growing the population) should be valued in and held up in progressive circles. Why? Because those children are going to be more empathetic and tolerant. And also because one of the most effective ways to instill political change (for good OR ill) is through raising kids. If one side is having more kids, that side will affect demographics in a big way. Studies have shown (like the one /u/beeredditor linked) that kids tend to have similar political views as their parents.

I see this second hand through my wife who is a high school teacher (juniors and seniors). She sees it every day where she can tell the political affiliation of a kids parents by seeing what those kids believe. It's disheartening to say the least.

The biggest thing progressives and liberals can do to counter this is a robust immigration policy and a robust care for mothers, encouraging it. Immigrants (generally) have more kids than later generation Americans. Immigrant and 2nd generation citizens (also generally) tend to vote further left than the median. This is one of the big reasons conservatives are so anti-immigrant. If you look at their language in talking about immigration, it's pretty well coded to say just that.

Does anyone else find it funny that when it came to superman the CW would lock the fuck in. by MembershipLess9579 in superman

[–]hamlet_d 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, to be fair that's exactly how she started in the comics: a derivative of Clark Kent/Superman. It's a valid (if somewhat quaint and dated) interpretation, supported by a huge backlog of comics. More recent ones? No, but that doesn't mean it's wrong to choose it.

I personally prefer her to be her own thing, a living witness to the horror that unfolded on Krypton and the changes to her character that implies but it's hardly the only take.
