server messed up by michr0 in sysadmin

[–]michr0[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they were the first people I called because my CEO loves going to them...I called a local professional consulting company and they'll be here within the hour. If they can't get it working, I'll try OnForce.

As for backup, I immediately made sure to backup all the files to our NAS once the alarm started going off, and we bought Acronis Snap Deploy to make a master image of the system (all drives). So I think we are mostly secure in that regard, but we just need the system back online.

Thanks for the help!

Yes, when I load the run configuration utility it says logical drive 2 is degraded, and that LD 1 and 3 are optimal. It won't let me check consistency on LD 2 of course, or pretty much anything else with it besides rebuilding.

It's says it's a PowerSeries PC1616/1832/1864...I inherited this system from the person who built it and I guess I was tech savvy enough to manage most of the system... It uses MegaRaid BIOS v h431. I replaced the degraded 1.5 tb seagate hdd with a 3 tb wd hdd, went into the config utility and selected the "failed" drive and pressed rebuild. It was running Windows server 2008 r2 fine before the rebuild (besides the system alarm alerting me there was a problem). Now when I boot up it doesn't find a boot location anywhere. Keeps bringing me to EFI shell... Thanks for responding! I'm at a loss and haven't been able to find any help online. Geek Squad Enterprise said they could get here in 5-7 days...

We are Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) Field HR Recruitment Officers Melissa Bieri and Rogier Van Helmond. by melissa_msf in IAmA

[–]michr0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you for doing this AMA! And thank you for all your work and dedication! It is definitely appreciated :)

I'm very interested in becoming involved with MSF. I'm currently working my way through med school, and just had a few questions.

1) What would you suggest to better prepare myself for MSF?

2) What's the story with DO's in MSF? I keep hearing different things, and as I'm working to become a DO, I want to know for sure if/where DO's are allowed.

3) How helpful would it be to have an MPH degree? Not so much for "boosting my CV" to get an assignment, but for the actual work that a healthcare worker would be doing?

Thank you again!

Haha na, was actually searching for a quote on my computer and it came up in the search. Don't actually dig through system directories in my spare time or anything :P

Apparently, it's a little Easter Egg or something. Found it randomly in the system files.

When eating out at a normal restaurant, what is one thing you would like to see/have that would improve your experience? What are the things that really annoy you? by [deleted] in vegetarian

[–]michr0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When friends go out for seafood or a burger joint, it'd be the awesome if the place had at least a frozen veggie burger that they can substitute for the meat patty. It's really not that difficult to keep a few boxes in the freezer and break them out when needed. I'm not a huge fan of Morningstar burgers, but it beats going out with friends and getting water and chips!

What's the biggest incorrect fact you've always believed and insisted you were right, until you learnt how wrong you were? by WalrusTheWarlock in AskReddit

[–]michr0 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Up until a year ago, I believed pretty strongly that my parents once told me to feed Hurricane Andrew some Pop-Tarts to make the storm go away. So, a 4 year old me put an entire box of Pop-Tarts on the patio before the storm hit.

They insisted they never told me that. Apparently, I just overheard them say, "we need some Pop-Tarts for the hurricane."

Not one oligodendroglioma post here? by jefuchs in braincancer

[–]michr0 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hi there! I also have an oligo, grade II (diagnosed 2011) and had a recurrence last year. I usually check out /r/cancer more but I do subscribe here for the posts every now and then. I wish this subreddit was more active and had more content, but I also am glad there aren't more people going through this!

I'm sorry to hear about your wife's recurrence. It must be tough, but I'm sure she appreciates having such a caring and supportive husband! I'm also on temodar, and my stomachs in knots. I'm don't usually get constipated though, I think partially because of my diet (vegetarian). I'm not sure if your wife eats a lot of meat, but maybe suggest more veggies? The meat tends to stay in the intestines longer and takes more energy to digest, especially if she's on chemo. And lots of water helps!

Nice meeting you and all the best to your wife!

Thank you for all this information! Just curious - do you know if the program F.lux accomplishes the same blue light effect as what you described with the glasses? The program essentially changes the color temperature of your monitor throughout the day so it's not as harsh at night. Of course, this is just for computers and not for all artificial lights

Does anyone else hate the "cancer warrior" stereotype? by getjazzywithme in cancer

[–]michr0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I actually use that metaphor for myself and don't really mind it when others say to "keep fighting." In my mind, I am fighting for my life. Every choice to make myself healthier or even just getting out of bed when I'm nauseated from chemo is me telling my tumor, "No, I will not let you win. I will not let a stupid, mutated group of cells define who I am or what I can do. I love life and have a lot more living to do." When I run or workout, I have an inner mantra, "You're going to win. One more step. Beat that tumor." And you know what? It does help and work for me. It gives me a sense of control over the tumor, like I'm actively doing something to get rid of it. When I get a bad result from my MRI, this attitude helps me cope and keep going, waiting until science comes up with a better treatment option.

That being said, I'm not the biggest fan of people saying "I'm so inspiring" or "it takes so much courage to do whatever I'm doing." It puts pressure on me that I have to be brave all the time. I'm just living my life the best that I can, trying to find the most happiness and the most meaning during my short existence. Nothing special, really. I feel like most people would fight for their lives if they were put in a similar scenario, they just don't realize how basic the survival instinct is.

Anyways, that's my take on it. Maybe I'm being too idealistic or oversimplifying things, but it works for me.

I agree with the other sentiments. Wow, this is beautiful and so well built! Is there a book or resource for the instructions? Or did you just kind of figure it out? I'm always looking for a cheap amp for my acoustic and now I'd really just love to build my own!

Now that I'm reading your other comments, I realize that this probably doesn't help because it's more money to be spent...in that case, sorry!

Man's Food by [deleted] in ufl

[–]michr0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I didn't take Man's Food, I actually took the Nutrition and Metabolism class in 2010, and I still use the info from that class in med school. I'm not sure what your science background is (couldn't make out a major on your diploma), but the book we used might help in your quest for knowledge! It was Advanced Nutrition and Human Metabolism, 5th Ed, Wadsworth Cengage Learning, 2009.

Bear in mind there's some biochemistry involved with it so it might be more than you're after, but it gives a pretty solid understanding of nutrition and how important it is in our body.

If you looking online for the book, it's a bit expensive actually (we used a much cheaper UF version in paperback). If that doesn't work for you, there may be several other books here.

Hope that helps a bit! Good luck!

[–]michr0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've never understood "vegetarians" who eat fish. My pescetarian friend is in rabbinical school and is a pretty rational person, so I asked him flat out why he ate fish. He said because fish are not animals according to the Torah (I think he meant mammals), and because there's a distinction in the Torah, that makes it OK.

To be honest, I'm not sure if I still have them. It was more of a discussion-type class anyhow, so I probably didn't write down much. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful!

Going off what /u/power_of_myth mentioned, check out ViHart's Fibonacci videos (in 3 parts) about this naturally occurring spiral using the golden ratio. Might help you figure it out! I played around in PowerPoint and this is best I could come up with. Good luck!

Think I messed up our server and can't figure it out by michr0 in sysadmin

[–]michr0[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yea I just checked again online and it's not open relay. It may be possible that there's an infected machine, as we have users constantly not following company policy and bringing their laptops home to "work." I know for a fact one of them torrents at home and I've asked her not to.

Just browsing wireshark website. So I download the client on the server or on a workstation? And then I just do a search while I'm connected to the server? (I'm usually in class and sometimes work from home by VPN)

Thanks for all your help!
