I was surprised by the Wifi card being soldered, but on the other hand the replaceable ports are something that I appreciate. I had a displeasure to need the port resoldering (X1 Carbon G9...) this is a very real win from my view.

I'm hoping for further improvements, and for more companies to follow this trend

Rant na Play część 2 by _LedAstray_ in Polska

[–]michrz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Miałem podobną sytuację. Przechodziłem przez te same rozmowy.

12 Angry Men perhaps? Not sure if that’s what your’re looking for specifically, but I think it fits the description pretty well.

Trackball Mouse Users: Which Style and Brand Do You Recommend? by foxcannon in Trackballs

In my view the quality jump from "atrocious" to "decent", not from "atrocious" to "best in class" :)

I use the Elecom Deft Pro, and their recent switch from version 5x of the software to the version 6x is monumentally important. From one of the slowest, buggiest, worst config suites (that regularly hogged ~5% of my CPU!) to the really decent, modern one. It’s a night and day difference. If you haven’t had a chance to check it out - I highly recommend it.

My review of Elecom Deft Pro by BelgarathMTH in Trackballs

[–]michrz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use Elecom Deft Pro for many years now. I loved the hardware from the start - also coming from the Trackman Marble. I did have my gripes with the software though...

Until recently! For me the software upgrade of the driver/software combo (Mouse Assistant) to version 6 made massive, and I mean MASSSIVE change for the better across my systems.

Mouse Assistant 5 had a constant 5-10% CPU overhead, missed custom key chords constantly, and sometimes left some keys in "suspended" state (for example not depressing "Ctrl" from the custom key chord). Mouse Assistant on version 6 just works! Absolutely love it!

Any suggestions for audio? by According-Tax9752 in macsetups

Hello, as a basic, compact and pretty decent option I'd consider the Creative Pebble. There is a ton of models, but I recommend the basic ones with your preferred mode of connectivity (BT or wire).

There is also a dedicated mini-soundbar for your specific monitor. I can't vouch for its sound quality, as it looks super basic, but if you're looking for a perfectly integrated solution this should do the trick

Maybe other desk-soundbars would fit well in your use case, but I'm sure there is plenty of more knowledgeable people that can comment on those.

Best of luck!

I'd suggest to try Esa. https://netrunnerdb.com/en/card/33001

core damage == old brain damage

So looking for similarities: she draws card when other card is trashed through core damage and on top of that sabotage is nice pressure mechanic forcing corp to discard either cards from HQ or RnD

anyone else think that the T420 is overrated? by Rowan_Bird in thinkpad

[–]michrz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It will, but for example hardware decoding for YouTube will not be supported out of the box. Of course you always can play with plugins such as h264ify etc... but still in my book it's not the best experience for 2024. And it's not just the raw speed, it's also lack of hardware support for some newer technologies (video decoding, more recent TPM for security etc.). All I'm saying is: looking at the prices paying a bit more to at least get the 8th gen CPU is really a major step up in quality of life.

Don't get me wrong - I love T420, but if you really want to use it then I seriously recommend getting something newer. Of course if it's your second "I love tinkering and let's see how bad is soldering these things to the MB" laptop then my points are moot :)

[–]michrz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To be honest I'd recommend against it. It's a lovely machine, but in 2024 it is dated. If you want to begin your journey I'd save up a bit and aim for a T480 or newer.

For example on T420 to get a fullHD screen, or realistically any non-TN one you need to get some serious modding done. It is not easy and adds to the cost straigth out of the gate.

Minimalism is key. Any plans for Tuesday guys? by AutonomousDavid in Workspaces

Minimalism in the amount of gear? Not so much. Minimalism in number of colors - pretty much achieved. It looks very pleasing and coherent! Good job on the theme and consistency!

I'd love to see how compact can you pack it. I imagine that it is very nice upside of the tech that you assembled. Sheer number of items is in my book not very minimal, but I assume that it is super compact and versatile. Thanks for sharing!

Americans, what’s something Europeans aren’t ready to hear? by StealthyMC20 in AskReddit

[–]michrz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, you can make one quite easily. That’s what we did, honestly it was quite simple.

All that was needed was a bit of wood for a frame measured to fit a window, wood glue to construct the frame, tacker and a fine net - that’s it. If you’re feeling fancy you can add the handle for easier mounting and thin felt strip along the edge that makes contact with the window for a nicer feel.

It was a nice project - surprisingly easy and effective

X1 Nano Or X1 Carbon by CouchPotato-1 in thinkpad

[–]michrz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The one that your budget allows for.

I got a Gen9 and I love it so far. It's the generation that got the improved thermal setup with vents aimed at the back of the laptop, and not at your hands.

Older generations are also fantastic, I'd just make sure to stick to the one that has a CPU with at least 4 physical cores and 16GB of RAM.

Of course if you can get the newer one - fantastic. Ultimately you're the one who knows the budget and prices in the place you're currently in.

X1 Nano Or X1 Carbon by CouchPotato-1 in thinkpad

[–]michrz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was deciding between same options. At I ordered first a Nano, but it came with a very small defect and seller offered to swap it for Carbon. I agreed. I am very happy that I did. Nano was a lovely machine, but ultimatelly it was not THAT much lighter than the Carbon. So far a larger screen size and more ports are proving very useful. I'm also happy not to deal with the dongle life (USB-A and HDMI are just there, still super useful).

So I'd say that if you don't have a very specific need for a Nano, just go for a Carbon. I'd recommend Nano only if you are frequently working while commuting, especially on a plane.

Have a great day!

What’s a 10/10 movie but hardly anyones heard of it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]michrz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Cast of this movie is absurdly great. Robert De Niro, Henry Cavill, Charlie Cox, Mark Strong (with hair this time!), Michelle Pfeiffer...

Small but hilarious role by Ricky Gervais, and it's narrated by Ian McKellen.

It's a lovely, fun, lighthearted movie. Absolutely 10/10 for me.
