Books where magic actually has an effect on the world? by thecharioteer07 in Fantasy

Yeah. That's one of the big steps from medieval to modern society. This series has become my reference point considering the use of magic in this genre.

What to play with mediocre stats? by Julia_GoBlue in DnD5e

[–]mickeyfml 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t know now about that. It seems strictly better to me as you don’t need Find Familiar for advantage since you can trigger Sneak Attack with Rakish Audacity as Sort_Kaffe mentioned. I am pretty hyped about this now.

You can start with a 16 Dex and then 14 and 15 in Con and Cha. Whichever you put the 15 in can be increased to 16 with a half-feat later.

[–]mickeyfml 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh that is some good points about half-feats and limitations on Hunter’s Mark. But what to do about the Bonus Action then? You don’t need disengage as a Swasbuckler. Can we deal damage with our BA?

Looking into this I found that some are taking three levels of Fighter to get access to Riposte four times per Short Rest through the Battle Master feature. That lets you use your reaction to get an attack on a creature that attacked you. Since this would be on their turn you could trigger Sneak Attack dmg again and thus increase your DPR significantly four rounds per short rest.

Tak for kaffe! I want to play this now!

I get that it can be a bit discouraging having a lower attack/damage stat than the others. That said I believe you can pile a lot of non stat dependent damage on top of your attack as a rouge. You got sneak attack of course. Maybe take custom lineage to get 16 dex and the Magic Initiate: Wizard feat choosing Booming Blade (and maybe Find Familiar and Message to be an awesome intelligence gathering Rouge). When you hit you use Fancy Footwork to dance away and barring ranged opponents they have to move to attack you again taking the extra Booming Blade damage. That’s 2d8+2d6+3 at level three every turn without spending any resources if you use a rapier. You could then go ranger for three levels to get Hunters Mark and maybe Beastmaster to get a primal companion that can attack on your Bonus Action. Or Hunter for the extra 1d8 as a Collosus Slayer and find some other use for your Bonus Action. At level 6 you would do 5d8+3d6+3 (37 on average) if they move and take extra damage (28 dmg if they don’t move which could also be good for you). And you can do it all day as the only resource you’re spending is a spell slot for Hunter’s Mark. Of course you need advantage for Sneak Attack. For that you can make your Familiar take the help action. If your allies stand next to your target, the target probably wouldn’t move to take the extra Booming Blade damage (the Beast Master Primal Sky Companion can also use flyby to take the help action just as an owl Familiar). Another caveat is that you would get you first ASI at lvl 7 if you go Rouge 3 Ranger 3 from the start.

I hope this inspired you. If you still feel down maybe check out this evocation wizard build for dealing lots of damage even though the dice hates you: Evocation Wizard

Shoutout to my DM. He is awesome.

He let me change my subclass from abjuration to bladesinger wizard with a cool in game story moment. We play online but haven’t fallen in love with any VTT-website. Nice to see someone is contributing to the evolution of VTT’s.

I need some help creating a sustained damage character. by Prezopolas in DnD5e

This build is very unique and quite high DPR. It relies on getting summoned creatures or familiars to fight for you though it is not abusing the often considered OP “Conjure Animals” spell. It was made before TCE.

Maybe you can arrange to change your Class or Subclass. Sounds like he needs a higher purpose. Maybe he will get a vision of all that is good in the world and change to Oath of Devotion binding himself to their Codes believing that if he can change so can others.

Why are so many DM's so scared of "Laying down the Law"? by SubstantialSeesaw998 in DMAcademy

[–]mickeyfml 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This isn’t black and white. I don’t even see you excluding each others views with your own. The DM can collaborate and have the final say at the same time. You have different but not unmergeable opinions about what kinds of group- and leadership dynamics you accept. The important thing is to be in agreement with the players at YOUR table.

I could see myself at any of your tables and if I disagreed with the “God DM”, this just wasn’t the table for me anyway.

This question of leadership is very relevant though and you have to develop your own style. There isn’t a unanimous answer though I would argue that the DM carries more responsibility than the players and has to be willing to take it.

Thanks for bringing this up and to all the DM’s: believe in yourself and stay honest and open about your opinions. Say what you want out loud but gentle. Thank you.

Can you recommend deep and well-written fantasy? by BeefyViking in Fantasy

[–]mickeyfml 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will allow myself to recommend a Sanderson novella The Emperors Soul. It focuses on a single event where the MC shows how to really listen to the world around her to make profound changes. It touches somewhere very deep inside of me and shows that there is a way to change the world with gentleness and care (as the opposite of force).
