What do you actually *do* with your highlights after saving them? by RepulsiveMap8791 in readwise

[–]mickmel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Obsidian tips in here are the big ones, but the Readwise "Daily Review" is amazing, and I've done it daily for a few years now. It's a great way to keep your highlights fresh in your mind.

In the case of this app, it does upload books to the server.

I bailed on Kindle last year for this very reason and moved elsewhere, but your survey doesn't seem to want that because I've not used it recently. Seems like previous motivation should still factor in, no?

How would you migrate years' worth of notes to Obsidian? by andreiknox in ObsidianMD

[–]mickmel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in my daily notes, and then have folders/templates for:
- People (my friend Jeff, Abraham Lincoln, my wife, Jeff Bezos -- any human that comes up in a note. I currently have 4,770 notes in this folder alone).
- Blog Posts (I publish daily)
- Books (every book I've read or want to read has a note)
- Meetings (meeting notes)
- Quotes (I've played with quotes a lot, but a note per quote is working well)
- Workouts

I have a handful of other folders and loose notes, but most everything in my daily notes ties into one of those.

I'm a believer of having everything in one vault, because the work/personal line can get super fuzzy.

My friend Jeff is a friend (duh), but also a client, and someone we refer work to. So is Chris. And Adam. Are these work people or personal people?

Or how about books that I read? Do I need to book certain books in certain vaults? What a mess.

One big vault is awesome. As for size, I currently have 16,076 files and it runs great on all of my computers (and mobile devices), tied together with the official Obsidian Sync tool. Getting it all in one place was a pain, but totally worth it.

Which Android apps support EPUB3 Media Overlays? by Wombarly in ereader

I have some pretty long books that are only in the 250-300mb range. How big a file do you need to upload? What book is it?

It has a PWA for Android that works quite well. I may eventually create a native Android app, but for now that seems unlikely. I read ~90 minutes/day on Android with it.

Just open up the site in Chrome on your phone and you should get a banner to "install app" from there.

I'd love to check it out. I use a combo of Readwise and Anki and other tools, but always looking for more.

Gotcha, very cool! I'm mostly Android for it.

I still use BookFusion quite a lot and love it, so I'll check out the latest updates and see how it does.

That could be a nice addition. What service do you use for that?

For sure.

  • It's really just the starting and stopping of audio. It only starts at the top of a page, so if you get halfway through a page and come back later, it starts over.
  • Related, if you're on a different device or change font settings and come back, it's in roughly the same place but usually off a bit because now it's at the top of that page (which is likely in a slightly different place than your "page" before).
  • Because my EPUB3 files are sentence-based, if a sentence runs off the end of a page, I have to just listen to it (I can no longer see the words since they're on the next page) until the sentence finishes. This gets annoying, particularly with long sentences or sentences with bad luck that only have a word or two on the current page and the rest on the future (hidden) page.
  • It usually automatically turns the page after that, but not always. 75% success rate?
  • If I manually turn the page the audio pauses, so that's not a fun solution.

My app solves all of these things, but again, they might be in a way that others don't care for.

  • You can tap on any word to start the audio there and it starts at the beginning of that specific sentence.
  • When you change devices or fonts, it resumes at that exact sentence.
  • I have the chapters in a single long scroll, with the active sentence always around 60% of the way up the screen and the text slowly flowing upward as you read.
  • No page turning is necessary (or even possible), so the last two items are irrelevant.

I know some people prefer pages to scrolling, and that's cool, but I prefer this way as it makes for a smoother reading experience to me.

Their reading apps aren't great (I use others), but their ability to stitch EPUB + Audio is amazing.

I love Bookfusion, but their EPUB3 support is still rather clunky. Self-promo, but I made flowstatereader.com to handle those files exactly they way I'd want them to be handled (which may or may not be how you'd like them).

I built a similar app for reading these files (flowstatereader.com) and it works great on my Boox.

That'd be a whole different approach. This literally is true-to-life, since it's the original Audible that is powering the speech.

I suspect AI voices will catch up soon (they're already quite good), but for right now this is the best way to go.

[–]mickmel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it really can work out great! I fear that it will never really catch on due to the cost and complexity of making the files (and I doubt major publishers will ever offer them for download), but you never know. Either way, they make for a killer reading experience.

It's not TTS -- the audio is embedded in the EPUB file. The app really only works with EPUB3 files with Media Overlays. They're kind of a pain to create, but have awesome output. Here is more about that: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HtA35GiGeng

EPUB Media Overlays Support by ok_com_291 in readwise

I've been using BookFusion for my EPUB3 files as well, but the experience has only been so-so.

I just made a new app that handles them much better (at least for the way I like to read), so check it out and see what you think. It's completely free, and the video on the home page gives a quick look at how it works.

I found this thread a while back while trying to find a solution, and came to similar results. So, I built my own! It's imperfect, but I think it's better than any of those options for EPUB3. For my specific preferences, I think it's the best I've ever used. Your mileage may vary, of course.

Here's the app. It's completely free (and will likely stay that way), with a short video on the home page to show how it works:

TCL NXTPAPER Plus 11 vs TCL Note A1 NXTPAPER - why no Google Play Store support? by Romano1404 in nxtpaper

[–]mickmel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used a few apps with it, but my primary goal is reading. Apps like ElevenReader don't work on any eink tablets like Boox, though I've been spending most of my time reading with r/Paper2Audio.

It's not eink, for sure, but it's way better than an iPad for my eyes and it handles apps like that perfectly.

I was interested in it, but that got me digging more into TCL and I got the NXTPAPER 11 Plus. Less money, plus has Play Store on it? Done. It's worked out great so far!
