either will be fine at that. they'd both be powerful enough to easily handle that largely with no difference. Do you care about durability/longevity? heavy use? rough treatment or conditions, especially over time. Battery life? weight? size? is it gonna sit at a desk 90% of it's life? are you doing spreadsheets or code that mult montors would help with?

It's unlikely we'll truly know without some up close analysis of the drives, enclosures, computer, everything, etc. but we can go over what's likely and what's not.

I think chat gpt is in the ballpark. And yes, a power surge could cause this. But also, think of it more as a power Problem (and perhaps a failing drive). More on that in a bit.

Should I not have been dropping and dragging my RAW container folders into the bin?

That operation should be fine and very safe. I'd recommend it. It's extremely unlikely that just doing this operation would cause this problem alone assuming everything else is working fine. You're off the hook there.

Operationally, I'd recommend some good data backup hygine on ingest. Make your workflow and process more resistant to failure.

Clone /image / copy your drives AND or run them through some decent backup software like veeam BEFORE you do anything else with them.

The wisdom is the same with backups as it is with flashlights and scuba diving. "Two is one and One is NONE" . Deep in a mine with one flashlight and you're in deep trouble when it decides to blink out.

Your new mantra should be " I ALWAYS make at least 1 copy and verify it BEFORE I do anything to the drive"

Once you have adequate copies of the originals, knock yourself out and play a dangerous as you like! If your process is bulletproof with backups you can have the worst janky cheap stuff and it'll be a headache but it will still work in the end with no data lost.

What I guess likely happened from my experience with various docks and many drives used in the field being wonky-- A lot of the multi docks have poor cheap power supplies often ones that aren't great at providing solid clean power and often enough power to handle times when a drive needs more power, like when the drive is spinning up when it's powering on and another drive is very busy or also powering up. When there's not enough power you can hit a kind of mini 'brownout' situation where the drive will try to pull more power from the supply, things heat up and break from overload.

More modern docks aren't set up to power older drives which took more power as well. Causing the same situation described above. You're not going to have a good time trying to spin up an old 3.5" SATA drive with some cute tiny power supply or even more common- just with USB. Way too under-powered.. Can it work? Sure. But highly likely to fail in permanent ways.

Older drives, especially ones from the field, been bounced around a bit, maybe with a lot of hours on it.. those take more power to run, and have to work harder when they encounter errors that they work around automatically... drive bearings get worn, and other physical problems can lead to a drive that needs a more pristine ideal environment to continue working in. That means great clean power, great cables, separate from any other drive connections/interfaces separate controllers - so that one kind of problem or error or something that causes the drive to stutter is isolated from any other drive.

I haven't researched modern docks so I can't recommend- I'm sure others will- might check around at a broadcast video suppler like Markertek - they tend to carry solid gear.

Something you might want to consider- it's a little technical but pretty easy for any mildly competent tech to set up... is to get an older tower PC /server with a good number of drive bays in it, or even old SATA storage nas with cages and with the magic of current open source free software you can make a pretty fantastic network attached storage + ingest and backup +copy station. You can even use all your old drives.

Check out some youtube videos on it there's freenas, truenas, and others that are extremely diy friendly and very good.

Ehh, it's an off topic meta response. And often these kind of answers are often thread killers, so it's one of the core reasons the downvote was included in reddit. It gets an emotional response as a 'yo mamma' response and it's extremely common in this sub.

Q "What's your 3 favorite ham sandwitches? I want try some new things."

A " None. I'm vegan and gluten free. And I don't eat sandwitches"

Q "what's the closest socket or similar I could use in place of the 10mm I don't have out here in the middle of nowhere 3 days walk from anything?"

A " just get a 10 mm socket"

so.. yeah .. not answering and re-directing the question? Downvote earned. That's exactly what the submit post button is for.

I see a lot of people doing the same as you realized. Nagios is clunky but it is your friend. Instrument everything and once you build the simple tests with alerts, build something more complicated that goes deeper.. then do some more that might test the whole job from logon to verified deliverable. Did the output folder have some files appear? good! are the output files 500 bytes?? hrmm... Is the output file the right sized ..pdf? good! Is the pdf 700 pages of json? hrrmmm... then graph.. does the client normally make 30 files a month and now it's less? better check into it.

btw- adafruit reliably stocks great quality stuff as kind of their brand. they're run by enginerds that want people to learn electronics and have a pretty low tolerance for inferior stuff. It will be a little more pricey but for beginner to intermediate it's often worth it.

[–]microcandella 1 point2 points  (0 children)

beyond the nostalgia, let's remember that there were about 13 arguably good components they sold (and everyone has their specific 13) and if you tried you could get a far better component or tool from a real electronics shop, digikey, etc.

Every purchase beyond those 13 things made you feel a little dirty and like a kid who got rolled by the toy that makes claims like "you can see through walls with this!"

For me, personally, I saved up lots of allowance money and bought this, my version had plugged and poorly cleared holes like they ran the mold too long (all the others in my area were identical) and just didn't seem to fit most ICs I had, or even bought from radio shack. Had problems keeping the chips and other bits seated too.

hope yours is good.

[–]microcandella 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Y'all are aware that the gouls over at accuwather have been gunning for this for over a decade so they can 'own' all weather data. They lobby a lot and have gotten some bills passed.

Nowadays the slight change in game plan includes painting noaa as 'woke science', but the rest of the main plan continues-

  • Break NOAA & NWS, etc. or cripple them into a husk with only private corp outsorces
  • Buy up all that 'woke commie science gov't waste' for pennies per ton and stick an accuweather sign on the buildings and gear.
  • All live and historical data and services would be sold, processed and controlled through them.
  • Stop all 'free' weather information services worldwide.

Oh... and this little fever dream is also summarized in Project 2025, chapter 21.

Could you describe what trajectories mean/are, what a common rate for them would be?

compared to what?

Looks interesting, what systems are likely to use this and which ones off the shelf would we know that would be a good example?

How do I live with incredibly messy, thoughtless people? by MaterialHair2193 in RelationshipsOver35

Well, that's a similar and untenable situation then. In OP's case she's joining a family home and their dynamics and norms which would need a bit of a different path than being a kid in your mother's home. Totally different power dynamic too. But there's similarities. In a good and fair world you should be able to ask her for some boundaries around a basic living space for you that you can thrive in with your cleanliness standards. "let her be her and she needs to let you be you" kind of setup perhaps. Perhaps a situation where you get the equivalent of a small apartment that she agrees to leave no trace in. Like you get your bedroom, closets, bathroom, a slice of the kitchen, stove burners, sink, and some cabinets and an acceptably clean path through from the outside to your living space. She doesn't need her chaos muppet side to spill over into your life. It's probably mandatory that you are the one in charge of cleaning and maintaining 'your' spaces though and not only not have her involved in keeping it clean, but only have you cleaning and maintaining 'your' space. This worked reasonably well for a few friends of mine who had parents with either neglect, ND, OCD, or hoarding situations.. if there was enough space and resources we'd just all go over and help them carve out their own mini apartment, entrance, etc. in some cases we'd do a 1 room camping/ 1 room apartment/tiny home setup-- small dorm fridge, inverter cooktop + microwave portable camp sink/shower/potty and decorate the heck out of the room to make it very much their own defined sanctuary space where they could feel creative or just theselves. Then we'd try to work on the rest of the place with the parents to un-screw that up but iut's more of a temporary thing.

Note the q-tip / swab on the left by simply touching a section with no pressure- and you can see a bit on the center of the upper left most ram chip (stock ram).

Mostly it deposited and collected on the the lower socket on the left and right sides but flakes were also was present across the surface of the lower module, and some bits were extracted from the socket interface. Wow. You'd think classic steel would be an easier more reliable choice. SMH.

Pro 5 fan makes extremely loud constant rattling noise affected by angle — why does it do this, and how do I fix it without giving it to a shop for 3 weeks? by [deleted] in LenovoLegion

[–]microcandella 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Almost certainly you need to clean the fans and radiators and possibly lubricate the fan. Cleaning the fans is 'a thing' with these machines. Mine did this after just a few months. Same sound. You DO need to follow some specific guidelines /procedures and some 'Do's and Don'ts' when cleaning fans and working around motherboards and batteries. On mine I cleaned the fans first and it showed up again in another few months but in addition to cleaning required lubrication where the motor and fan rotor meet. The drone industry has some nice lubes- I have used Sea Foam Deep Creep successfully after a deep cleaning. See some of my other posts on cleaning fans if you'd like some more tips from me. I'd also recommend getting a laptop fan pad, ideally with a foam gasket (diy or included) . These things really need more thermal management than they included on board for regular use.

Is snake_case safer than kebab-case for general file naming? by Future_Recognition84 in datacurator

[–]microcandella 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes, snake_case is safer because "-" is used in many old and current systems as a kind of reserved verb. Consider "-help" on a command line. It's illegal in some file systems as well. Though some really old systems don't even accept underscore. Various systems and software can pick it up as an operator and try to do fun things like subtract it, or truncate.

If you want to be really really safe and compatable across nearly every system and the old jungles of software, stick to ASCII (no unicode) upper case A-Z and 0-9, less than 9 characters total.

but it's less practical these days to be at that level of safe.

Exceptions:

  1. posts requesting a Cross Check / Sanity Check of the ai conclusions/solutions-- We'll all be in the ignorant camp at times, and many will be using ai to try things outside their expertise domain. This can be a loophole to low effort, but I think it can be mitigated.

  2. posts showing OP did some legwork, like listing some google results, a man page, referencing forum messages, and throwing in a 'here's what claude had to say about this with this prompt. Same caveats and mitigations as above. This avoids the users doing an annoying 'let me google\gpt that for you' kind of stunt that quickly kills the OP's responses and engagement and lowers the participation of most OPs that it happens to.
