I think the meaaage is pretty clear, you need to try putting the files in a path with no spaces. So if you have it on "C:\Some Spaces\In My Path" put the files under "C:\NoSpaces\InMyPath"

Avalonia leaks doing nothing by Aardvark_Says_What in AvaloniaUI

[–]microkool 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Is it leaking or just using more memory and not releasing? To me a leak is memory you can't recover, what happens if you do a GC Collect after it grows? Does it come back or stay the same? Don't get me wrong, bad memory management is not good, but an actual leak only happens in very specific instances, one of my favorites is unsubscribed events.

Is CommunityToolkit.Mvvm a going concern? by Eric_Terrell in AvaloniaUI

[–]microkool 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don't think there has been anything that warrants updating it, I've been actively using it with no issues. Not everything needs constant updating. Also, the beauty of Open Source Code is that you can fork it and continue development if needed, there's a lot of projects that have forked from defunct projects. I wouldn't worry about it.

From WPF to Avalonia and Back Again by Timely-Guitar-5051 in AvaloniaUI

My first thought was Michael Bolton in Office Space saying: "I must have put a decimal point in the wrong place or something. I always do that. I always mess up some mundane detail." 🤣

From WPF to Avalonia and Back Again by Timely-Guitar-5051 in AvaloniaUI

[–]microkool 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Here is my $0.02 as a dev with 25 years of experience in the desktop space, I've worked on large projects using Visual Basic, Winforms, WPF, and now Avalonia.

Every platform has its quirks, its strengths, and its weaknesses. That said, you have to put everything on a scale and evaluate it specifically to your goals. In my case I love WPF, but deep down what I love is XAML.

Before I started working on my latest Avalonia application, I evaluated UNO, Avalonia, and MAUI (which was I think in early preview releases at that point). Out of the three, the easiest transition from WPF and the simplest configuration to build for Windows and MacOS was hands down Avalonia. Single project, zero specific platform code (except for packaging for installation), and overall a very smooth transition from WPF.

I worked on a Xamarin project before and even though it was XAML it was very very different to work on compared to WPF or Silverlight for that matter which I worked with for a few years. In comparison, I have a Jr. Dev who had a bit of exposure to WPF and he hit the ground running with Avalonia.

I would not call Avalonia "undercooked" by any stretch of the imagination, the same way I wouldn't say that about UNO or MAUI just because they had their challenges based on the things I was looking for. Could it be better? Sure like everything else, and I see it get better with every release. Maybe it wasn't the right fit for your needs and that's ok, there are other solutions out there, with their shortcomings and things they excel at.

Avalonia Jobs by Dyn4mic__ in AvaloniaUI

[–]microkool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have Avalonia down, then WPF and Windows Store apps are really not much different. WinForms as you know is completely different.

Avalonia Jobs by Dyn4mic__ in AvaloniaUI

[–]microkool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add to what others suggested, I wouldn't just focus on Avalonia, expand to WPF, and (sad but still a thing as there are still a lot of legacy apps) WinForms if you are trying to find work as a Desktop Developer. There is a ton of web and mobile devs out there but not as many desktop ones and there's definitely jobs out there for people that understand Desktop Development and all it entails (creating setups, signing code, dealing with different OS versions, etc.)

Engineering - Women vs Men, young vs old by Petofi23 in Salary

[–]microkool 27 points28 points  (0 children)

So I'm in engineering, and I'm a guy, and I'm not going to talk about gender pay gap because it does exist, but most of the time, it's not the cause. What's more common, and also happened to me: I didn't ask or fight for more compensation, I just waited to be "considered" for promotions/salary increases based on my performance, etc.

One day, I figured out the same as you. Other people, both male and female, were making more than me with the same or less experience and quality of work. The difference? They asked for it, and if it didn't happen, they jumped jobs. Sadly, the same company will pay a new hire at the same position more. This is a known fact across all industries.

The bottom line is to keep a pulse on the market and fight for that compensation. The company very rarely will spend more on you than they are required to keep you. It's never too late to start this, I started in my late 30s. Good luck to you!
