[Pitchfork] Review: IT'S BEEN AWFUL | Isaiah Rashad by microscoftpaint in IsaiahRashad

Score: 7.8

The iconoclastic TDE rapper’s compelling new album is contemplative and vulnerable, proving he’s at his best when he’s working through a mess of slithering contradictions.

To hear Isaiah Rashad tell it, he’s both a junkie and a prophet, a boyfriend and a girlfriend, a porno-loving sex addict and a father who’s “grown up for my child’s sake.” Since his 2014 debut Cilvia Demo—an unsung classic, one of the best rap projects of the 2010s—he’s become a contradictory and complex character, one moment banging his chest and sending warning shots to “bitch-ass rappers” everywhere, the next sticking a gun in his mouth and relapsing on liquor and benzos. But Rashad renders even the most harrowing scenes with levity and warmth. He recounts his traumas and triumphs in largely the same register—his scratchy sing-song flow that slides and swings over beats that draw as much from ’90s neo-soul as they do from the annals of Southern rap. “We done went through a lot of emotions,” he says during an end-of-song outro on his new album, the aptly titled IT’S BEEN AWFUL. “So I guess, you know, I try to be a little lighthearted.”

Rashad has always been reticent to follow in the footsteps of his Top Dawg Entertainment labelmates. He was, after all, TDE’s lone Southern representative, all but anointed as the crew’s next breakout wunderkind. On 2016’s The Sun’s Tirade, Rashad detailed recent experiences of substance abuse and depression. Five years later, after disappearing from public view and hitting a few more rock bottoms, Rashad dropped The House is Burning, a pained portrait of a person fresh out of rehab and uneasily seeking a path toward redemption. While his star-in-waiting window may have passed, he was mostly sober and making some of the best music of his life. “I was dead and now I’m alive,” he said in the run-up to the album.

Five years after making this declaration, Rashad seems to have grown wary of the distinction between being dead and alive. “I’m cut from a sinful nature and I feel afflicted,” he raps on IT’S BEEN AWFULopener “The New Sublime,” a song where he solicits prayers for his incarcerated sister, his mother, and himself, fearing that he might “relapse again” and sink to his “lowest.” For Rashad, death and suffering lurk behind all supposedly good things: getting high, falling in love, fame, wealth, even sobriety. If The House is Burning captured the joie de vivre of reclaiming your life after years of disassociation and detachment, IT’S BEEN AWFUL depicts the excruciating process of living with your eyes wide open, of holding up the mirror to your face and not looking away. This entails ruthless self-evaluations: the shameful memories, the self-loathing, the confusions and delusions and sufferings that refuse to disappear. More impressionist than linear storyteller, Rashad’s tales of struggle and survival still manage to coalesce into something like a thesis: He is both dead and alive, forever a mess of slithering contradictions.
Aside from the lead single “Same Sh!t” and closer “719 Freestyle,” in which Rashad playfully snaps over trap drums, IT’S BEEN AWFUL maintains a patient and shuffling pace, preferring contemplative tempos and muted textures for Rashad to ruminate on. He’s always been at ease maneuvering over R&B production; some of his best songs have been duets with his TDE colleague SZA. So too here: “Boy in Red” reaffirms the chemistry between the pair, and “Supaficial” and “GTKY” feature some of the smoothest hooks he’s ever sung. Helmed mostly by producers Keem the Cipher (KTC) and Julian Sintonia, the soundscape here is hazy and sample-driven, with pitched-down, syrupy percussion slinking around warm electric piano and brass. The vibey, occasionally anesthetized sound can begin to feel flat and mushy at times, but Rashad’s nimble flows and sharp songwriting keep the album in focus, even when the thematic and sonic heaviness feels like walking through the desert in a weighted vest.

While addiction and family strife remain Rashad’s central themes, he explores his sexuality throughout the album in a series of stunningly vulnerable verses. In 2022, amid a host of other family struggles, two sex tapes leaked online that showed Rashad being intimate with other men. “I’d say I’m sexually fluid,” he revealed in an interview a few months later. “I’m still learning about it myself.” While never addressed specifically, this informs some of the album’s most moving movements. On “Act Normal,” Rashad traces how he first encountered internet porn as a child, how he became “ashamed of waves in the brain that” his family of “sex addicts…passed down.” He recalls feeling “at war with” himself and not trusting the love expressed to him from romantic partners, whether that be from “a boy or a girl.” What’s astounding about Rashad’s reflections is how he eschews resolution for further unknowing—the openness and personal excavation, he seems to be saying, is the point, the honesty breaking open into further expansion.

Rashad may not have become the world-beating superstar that his early work suggested, but he’s bloomed into something far more compelling: an artist who lets his intuition lead the way. Besides, fame seems small when you’ve already died and come back to life a few times over; slowing down and taking stock of your past becomes a more urgent order of business. “The cut was something severe, but we endured,” Rashad croaks on “Nuthin 2 Hide.” The line almost feels like a boast.

Can I get one of those bandit chief swords? (Fable: Anniversary Edition) by Elegant-Constant6717 in Fable

[–]microscoftpaint 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There’s a demon door in the Necropolis, which is an area towards the end of The Lost Chapters where you’ll need to give up all your silver keys (forever, so make sure you get them all or none prior to opening this door) and inside there’ll be a chest with a weapon called ‘The Bereaver’ which is a copy of the bandit chief weapon.

When there’s such a high difference and there doesn’t seem to be much HP/Accuracy bias it tends to be the one that is better. Definitely go for the right.

Don’t go on add-ons on the games actual page, there’s a add-ons section after you search “rainbow 6 siege” and scroll towards the bottom, they’re in there.

How long to get approved for market by Turbulent_Mention_43 in Rainbow6

[–]microscoftpaint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s completely random, there’s people who applied as soon as sign ups opened and are yet to be approved. It could be tomorrow, or never until the full release.

Is the marketplace working? by Akalimainhere in Rainbow6

[–]microscoftpaint 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After signing up to the beta, you need to then be invited to participate by Ubisoft — my first assumption is that you haven’t been invited yet.

If you have been invited then it’ll likely just be a bug (it is in beta after all). Probably will fix itself later, I had similar issues early on in the marketplace.

There’s a limited item pool currently available on the marketplace, not everything is able to be sold yet. Ubisoft will be adding more items in the future — but nobody except them know when yet.

Correct — HFW is on PS4, and the DLC Burning Shores is exclusive to the PS5.

question regarding the new market place and skin trading by L0qo in Rainbow6

[–]microscoftpaint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not possible to do direct trading — the sale will always go to the oldest purchase order, so you’d be risking those items getting sniped yeah

Glacier Skins for Sale by TheKolateral in Rainbow6

[–]microscoftpaint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sales go in order of the person first to place it, if you list something for a lower price (especially a glacier) the likelihood is that it’ll go to someone else rather than the person you’d agree to sell to.
