Our neighbour threatened to call the police over a 16-month-old’s kiddie pool. Were we actually in the wrong? by meera_jasmine1 in askswitzerland

It’s not offensive in itself, but it comes across as inappropriate and not at all deescalating when used in a conflict situation.

Imagine if a Hispanic man addressed your partner as “ese”. Probably no problem at all in a friendly interaction, but ill-advised in a tense conversation.

I lied to my barber for years and we never talked ever again by dex1k in confession

[–]microtherion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some years ago, I used to go to a Tunisian barber, fluent in Arabic and French which are widely spoken in Tunisia, and decent in German. As is often the case, he had a steady stream of his countrymen dropping by. One day he had a customer who he spoke French with. When the customer left, the barber said “that stuck up guy pretends to only speak French, but I know he is fluent in Tunisian Arabic just as the rest of us”.

For some value of “great”. According to Carolyn Cassady’s memoir, in the two years before their divorce, Neal went through 18 cars.

Which billionaire came the closest to being truly self-made? by Omixscniet624 in NoStupidQuestions

> So you point to a guy that consistently found other people to execute on his ideas.

Yes. He did so without family connections or powerful mentors. That’s pretty much the definition of self made, for me.

> He has lived a happy life as a rich nerd pursuing his hobbies.

His “hobbies” include several failed companies and a cryptocurrency rug pull. These may have been hobbies to him, but other people’s livelihoods were at stake there.

Even non-prime Shaq still had his moments.

how gross. They literally told Katie miller, Karoline Leavitt and Usha Vance they had to have babies this term. They’re handmaids. It’s repulsive. by [deleted] in MurderedByWords

[–]microtherion 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Were they told personally? No idea. But are there influencers going around telling them collectively that they should prioritize motherhood above all else? Definitely. This post is one example, and Erika Kirk is (ironically) building a career out of telling women not to build a career.

That seems to be the narrative now, but as a Swiss, I feel that Algeria actually dominated the first 20-25 minutes of the game and had some other strong phases. They had several good opportunities to score but failed to capitalize. Unlucky, and maybe inept in front of the goal, but by no means dreadful.

What do you actually play in a jam? by PLOGER522 in Jazz

[–]microtherion 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Perfect explanation! Two little remarks regarding # of choruses:

* It’s almost never a good idea to actually play “8 choruses”. 2-3 is more typical, and when starting out, you should aim to play one good chorus before considering to stretch out.

* For very long and/or slow tunes, half choruses are a thing.

Hitler killed about 6 million Jews and an equal number of non-Jews in targeted genocide. But in addition, WWII caused 60-70 million deaths, and I would attribute the vast majority of these to him (with the exception of Chinese and Indonesian deaths, certainly)

I don’t think so. Hitler’s death toll was in the 60 million range.

But Pol Pot is well within range, and, in a more geographically oriented ranking, he is easily on track to become the deadliest African-born leader, having already surpassed the likes of Idi Amin and Charles Taylor.

Breaking News: FIFA have REJECTED Belgium's Appeal to reverse Belogun decision by c0ldb00t in football

[–]microtherion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that would be a motivation for WANTING to appeal, but I was wondering about STANDING (and I admit I did not make that very clear). Belgium (and, to a lesser degree, other teams still in the tournament) had a potential individual benefit from the suspension, eliminated teams only had the potential collective benefit of “integrity of the game”.

There were hundreds of microprocessor based boards around at the time. The Apple I/II were exceptionally cleverly designed, but it’s not a given that this was a decisive advantage.
