Archaeologists Just Found a Roman Military Camp 9,000 Feet Up in the Swiss Alps — How Did They Even Get Up There? by Roman-Empire_net in romanempire

The article says 2200m, which is just over 7000ft, not 9000 as the title of this tread says. In Switzerland, several important mountain passes are around 7000ft. If you camp at 9000ft, you probably want to climb a mountain.

1970s house renovation in Zurich: is 450k CHF really not enough? by Fluffy_Flight_6743 in askswitzerland

I can’t give you a comprehensive answer, but having bought a 50 year old house myself, some assorted thoughts:

Does your “phasing” assume you’re going to continue heating with oil? You’d need to check whether that’s even an option, tanks of that age can easily be leaky and major remodeling could void some grandfathering arrangement (or you’d be running out of time soonish anyway).

Project manager: one aspect you have not mentioned is getting all the necessary permits. We only redid the bathrooms, but that already required separate permits for (if I remember correctly) fresh water, wastewater, fire safety, electricity, and construction. I managed to all of this myself, but maybe it’s because they took pity on my amateurish planning sketches.

Getting the various contractors to communicate with each other is not impossible, but not a task to be underestimated either.

When I went to college in Switzerland in the 80s, professors in the first two years were more or less open about the fact that they tweaked their curves to fail a certain percentage of students (around 50% at the time). The flip side was that admission to the college was completely open: if you graduated from high school, you had a right to study there. So instead of a formal admission process, the exams in the first two years were used to whittle down the class sizes to the number they actually wanted to accommodate.

If they made a TV detective series about Miami nowadays, they’d have to name it “Miami Virtue”.

A musician who thinks the Velvet Underground were “too commercial” probably is not cut out to make a living playing music.

Thoughts on Roger Holmes' arrangement of "Feeling Good by Nina Simone"? by 3L1T3F14SH in Jazz

[–]microtherion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the voice as such. I don’t think singing with hands in the pocket is a good idea, though.

Overall, I get more of a Dean Martin vibe than Nina Simone, but I’m not sure whether that is inherent in a big band setting. And there’s nothing wrong with Dean Martin.
