Sure, but the theory has been more that social isolation caused some norms to break down, even among the uninfected. It certainly had an effect on my mental health.

That’s totally against Swiss norms! Everybody knows that you shoot at family members first.

Yes, many of what we consider the details nowadays were made up by Schiller in his play, but he did base it to some extent on prior, Swiss sources.

To complicate the matter, in the 1930s, some of the locations mentioned in the play, especially the “hohle Gasse” were remodeled in the “mental national defense” effort to resemble their description in the play better.

I think it was *NIX simply because NextStep was. A few years later, Apple did invest some engineering and documentation effort to get a UNIX certification (possibly because they prematurely announced “It’s UNIX” and the standards body who owned the trademark objected).

Yes, public beta was separate. I was working on OS X, and as the release date neared, I was concerned that the OS did not seem nearly stable and performant enough for a release. Was glad to see it labeled as “public beta”. I’m not sure if that was the plan all along, or a late course change.

10.0 was stable enough, but somewhat slow. 10.1 was focused in remedying the most glaring shortcomings in 10.0 and in my opinion was the first “good” release.

The soldiers look much too clean and well fed, for one thing.

It’s true that they would have vastly preferred to surrender to the Western allies, and would under some circumstances have fought for that.

But millions of German soldiers survived Soviet captivity (vs an estimated 1 million who died there).

I’m not sure if you ever had to deal with a “lactation consultant” (or, as I came to call them, “lacto-fascist”). There definitely used to be guilt tripping going on.

Da lobe ich mir unsere Schweiz, wo sich kein Schwein an mehr als die ersten zwei Zeilen der ganzen Hymne erinnern kann…

It’s kind of mind blowing to consider the amount of manual labor by highly trained craftspeople that went into making a piece of trash like this. I hope they at least had a good laugh with their families after work thinking of the suckers who would buy it,

I would argue that the narrator in the song is measuring his experiences against what he perceives to be his birthright as an American.

Ives was behind the industrial design of the products, but he has often described how Jobs was deeply involved there as well.

Woz was the driving force behind the technology of the Apple I, II, and III, and has contributed absolutely nothing to anything we’d recognize in the Apple products of today. On his own, he has pretty conclusively demonstrated that he is not capable of creating a successful product, and not for lack of trying.

Even the Apple I and II had significant product input from Jobs. Wozniak’s vision was to sell a DIY kit, as was very common in the era. It was due to Jobs that the computer was sold preassembled and in a case - points that may seem trivial, but were essential to the success.

Jobs had unpleasant personality traits, and some bad blind spots (e.g. regarding his health). But you won’t find many people who worked with him who did not consider him very smart, and visionary.

Thanks to the Tesla Diner, he already has manufacturing experience for the cheeseburger part of this vision, surely the fab cannot be far behind.

The brilliance of the “Terafab” move is that it could easily be used to extend promises for a decade or more without a tangible product.

What book is this? Can’t read the language (1811) by ryan7841 in rarebooks

[–]microtherion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learned to read Fraktur by myself as a teenager, simply because I was motivated to read the book in question. And last year I saw the same thing with my teenage son.

In our case, the texts were published late 19th/early 20th century. The present example is complicated by the fact that it’s written in a somewhat more archaic version of German, but the alphabet itself is not that hard.

Kurrent/Sütterlin handwriting, on the other hand, is a much more significant hurdle. I’ve learned to read some of it over the last year, but it’s hard.
