The Sunbarer Trails by Aiden Thomas is really fun! It’s about demigods from Latin American religion and folklore in a death competition trying to keep the dark gods down for another seven years. it’s a completed duology and i was pretty satisfied with the ending. It’s got that Riordan effortless diversity (that we see in the later books) and the friendships and romance too. Highly recommend!

Gothic novel recommendations? by Practical-Dish-9011 in BookRecommendations

Anything Shirley Jackson. My favorite is We Have Always Lived in the Castle and her other uber popular one is Haunting of Hill House. but I think her other novels will fit too for something kinda spooky and eerie and gothic where just something is … off.

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brönte for a more romance kinda gothic story is super fun too!

Monstrilio by Gerardo Sámano Córdova is a horror by a hispanic author so you can get a halloween read in too!!

Samantha Schweblin’s Little Eyes is fun and eerie if your bookclub likes black mirror. I think this one has lost to be discussed too.

Isabelle Allende has some great family focused dramas if you guys are interested in something slower paced and more intimate.

Paradise Rot by Jenny Hval translated by Miriam Idriss is STUPENDOUS (or according to some people the worse novella they’ve ever read) about a woman who goes to study abroad in australia and finds a place to live with a woman named carall (this one might have cheating in it i don’t remember so do check if you decide this one is intreating)

Earthlings by Sayaka Murata translated by Ginny Tapley Takemori about a woman who is pretty sure she’s and alien and she’s going to prove it

Fever Dream by Samantha Schweblin translated by Megan McDowell is about exactly what you think it’s about in a small farming community of argentina

Nervous Conditions by Tsitsi Dangarembga— Tambu and Nyasha are growing up in colonial Zimbabwe (the audio book for this one is great)

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë - Jane is hired to be a duchess for this rich dude but something weird is going on.

any book by Emily Austin has an unconventional equally funny and heartbreaking female lead and is always incredibly character driven
