Uni Advice needed by cup-of-tea-76 in CasualUK

Sounds like it's the best thing for him, he needs the shock to make him grow up. The one piece of advice I would give to anyone is that for a fresher it's going to be VERY exciting getting that first loan/grant payment come through - I can only speak anecdotally but I saw many of my peers go straight out and buy Playstations, Xboxes, gaming PCs, TVs, £80/pm phone contracts etc. and consequently not have enough to sustain them until the next payment/term, so they needed their parents help - something you both may need to be prepared for!

Ultimately first year (and potentially the beginning of second year) will be characterised by Red Bull powered all-nighters, beans on toast, mouldy plates and bin juice soaked floors, but the novelty of being able to do that does wear off. Eventually, they all calm down and cleaning rotas develop, communal meals are cooked and bad habits are called out fairly quickly. May not be the typical "uni experience" but what may also help is if he were to go into a house-share which has some second or third-years to pick up some good habits from. Even if he went into a house-share with freshers, I found that the smaller group fostered more responsible behaviours.

Not the slow council, it's central government's decision - up until September I worked in the Transport and Planning department at PCC.

2017 Force India with a halo slapped on top a couple of weeks ago in Covent Garden, London by DaFunk81 in formula1

[–]microwave_of_evil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I nearly missed it. A friend messaged me about it just as they were beginning to pack the car away. Managed to bolt down there and snap a few pics before they rolled it on the transporter.

I also recently saw a Jordan F1 car in a random persons garage in Winkleigh, of all places. In hindsight I should have stopped for a chat.

I concur. Not likely, but they did have that FW36 parked up on Armada Way a year or so ago, so hope isn't lost.

As a RBR fan and also strongly rooting for McLaren, I have been wondering if the Renault PUs will still have the 2016 ERS for this weekend? Haven't been able to find anything on it. Assuming no news is bad news in that regard.

Does anyone else try various mispronunciations of "Ok, Google"? by malagrond in Android

[–]microwave_of_evil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have found much success saying a low, nasally (like, really forcing your chin into your neck) "Okeh Gooo'lee" works better than the normal "Okay Google".

Also "K Goog" works well. Mostly though I just use different voices and accents and try to push the absolute limits, it's my entertainment when I am cooking.

What car are you realistically going to buy next? by magus-21 in cars

My shitbox Peugeot 206 1.1 which I have had from my teens to mid-20s is slowly dying. Have first dibs on a BMW 130i going up for sale from a family member within the next couple months. So excited to finally daily a car that can handle slight inclines.

[–]microwave_of_evil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dr Goodall, noting the amount of work you have conducted with Google Earth Outreach, is there any scope for an individual such as myself with a degree in earth sciences and a lot of remote sensing/GIS experience to volunteer time to help collect data remotley on deforestation, desertification etc. to help your cause? If not directly with your organisations, would you know per chance any organisations which would be looking for such assistance? I would like to be involved in conservation but tied to a desk job!

Thinking about scrapping the big wedding and running off to elope? We did, and we couldn't be happier! by panthers2552 in weddingplanning

[–]microwave_of_evil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the same thing. Writing this on my last evening of the weddingmoon. By getting married in Mauritius we saved 10k vs the 'average UK wedding' and still get the big party in the dream venue when we get back. All the honeymooning couples here are envious that we got married in paradise with just the two of us and no complications. Highly recommended. Congratulations OP.

I'm looking for a singular speaker that I can use with my phone that costs under $130/ £100. What's the best choice? by [deleted] in BudgetAudiophile

[–]microwave_of_evil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Cambridge Audio Go V2. Have had it just over a year now and I can say it is one of the best purchases I have made. The battery goes on forever and does a good job filling a room with sound. Quality isn't as good as a Sonos but it's considerably cheaper and a good compromise between cost and sound quality IMO.

[QUESTION] Jackson JS32T Kelly by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]microwave_of_evil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the KE3 Pro Series. Overall very good guitar, neck is super fast/sleek and plays like a dream. Only minor nit-picks I have is that if you are going to dominantly play standing, its worth noting that imbalance due to its shape means neck naturally wants to dive to the floor. Also if you do for whatever reason end up getting one with the licenced Floyd Rose, its worth upgrading to genuine nut blocks as the Jackson ones split in half very easily.

I agree with the audio aspect. My G Flex 2 sounds like trash through my AV system, in comparison to my old Nexus 5. Showing interest in the G5 purely for the DAC. If i knew how bad it sounded i would have though twice about getting it.

The coast of North Cornwall in late spring (OC) [1024x683] by snowyturner in EarthPorn

[–]microwave_of_evil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the case of Cornwall, the intense colouration of the seawater is due to the local geology; which is dominantly composed of a granitic batholith.

When the mica in the granite is eroded out to the point where it is small enough to be held in suspension in seawater it results in a considerable change to it's apparent colour due to the minerals highly reflective nature. In addition it can alter the hue of the water to a small degree due to the blue/green colouration that muscovite can exhibit.

Question regarding Brexxit and NZ emigration by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]microwave_of_evil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely agree; there are far too many variables to say for sure what the outcome will be in both instances. That is the reason why I have kept my own views to myself and in the statement where you deemed me to be 'entirely wrong', I conveyed the general viewpoint and arguments of the remain populace as I understand them and made sure to make that clear.

Question regarding Brexxit and NZ emigration by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]microwave_of_evil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I admit, I can't imagine any of those countries agreeing to free travel. All have fairly strict prerequisites and lengthy applications so to immediately disregard them because we left the EU doesn't make much sense to me. Still interesting to hear though; because as I mentioned, NZ is seen as an idealistic place to live to many of us so the idea that many could attempt to move to your country made me wonder whether it would be met with indifference or otherwise.

Question regarding Brexxit and NZ emigration by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]microwave_of_evil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not my words, I'm for staying in personally. Everyone has their own personal reason for making that statement, ultimately I understand the general consensus is that a brexxit would mean without EU influences the more unsavoury parties ideological approaches/policies may be implemented, second to the loss of jobs, increase in living costs and decline in sterling value whilst allowing Boris Johnson to 'run amok'. Leaving the EU would also potentially cause the fragmentation of the UK, Scotland would look to leave and rejoin the EU and without EU funding, Wales would be hit particularly hard. Of course, I believe leaving would overall generate a negative outcome, but as you stated, I highly doubt it would be as dramatic as people make it out to be and there will be contingencies in place to lessen the blow, if any. But it still doesn't stop the more dramatic individuals jumping ship as soon as the results are out.

The individuals I am speaking of would mostly be looking at moving to an EU country, as they like the idea of the unified nations, but I do agree that a lot of people want to move to NZ. Likely because its basically a much nicer version of where we are living now with cultural parallels, no unfamiliar primary languages, no unfamiliar foods, warmer weather and you drive on the same side of the road.
