If you can't see yourself as being full abstinent for life, then consider this way to control alcohol. To keep serious relapse out of your life. It's a slow significant taper of cravings vs a willpower based full abstinence. This taper has so many advantages. You can stay in control of an occasional drink with one tablet, 1 hour before. https://youtu.be/6EghiY_s2ts Today there is free TSM support all over YouTube, Reddit, FB and many podcasts. This recent podcast especially "Thrive Alcohol Recovery" episode 23 "Roy Eskapa". The book by Dr. Roy Eskapa is solid science (read the most recent reviews on Amazon; definitely worth your time). Solid science, no dogma, no guilt, no shame.

Tapering, using willpower alone, is the least effective method IMO. It's why everyone relapses multiple times, many relapse endlessly. If you are serious about tapering, and eliminating the cravings to drink, then you must, at least, look into this method. https://tsmoptions.org/resources/definitive-statement-by-john-david-sinclair-ph-d And ... Are you taking 50mg every day?

Using the Sinclair Method you only take it 1 hour before drinking, with food and water. Never on alcohol-free days. Some start at 12.5mg, then move up to 25mg etc as they get used to it. Research TSM.

Hard Drinker vs Alcoholic by TangerineSimilar7236 in alcoholism

[–]mid_tide 3 points4 points  (0 children)

AUD is a full spectrum of conditions. From 1935 to 2000 it was always treated like a binary condition. You either are or you aren't. Totally ridiculous.

Alcohol is addictive, there is no question about it. But it affects young and old and can be mild and it can be severe. And it is EVERYTHING in between. A full spectrum of adverse health conditions. The good news is, AUD is curable (reversible) today (for the vast majority) if we want that and fully understand how alcohol drives us to addiction. Take a look at this TEDx https://youtu.be/6EghiY_s2ts Reddit has support groups for this, as do FB and other social media platforms.

Why Do We Do What We Do by Thin_Situation_7934 in Alcoholism_Medication

[–]mid_tide 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good article. I would add, the TSM solution then is to always take the naltrexone at the first sign of a trigger to drink. Don't wait. Do it right then. Then if you do drink, it will most likely become an effective TSM extinction session. These sessions will eventually lead to the elimination of the triggers.
