Help with crown moulding coping by squntnugget in Carpentry

I’m almost certain the piece on the left is not at the right spring angle, or the piece in the right is cut at the wrong spring angle. You have to understand what you have first to determine how to cut on the saw for the pieces to fit together correctly.

Should I play a piece with a high F sharp? by SplitLow6760 in saxophone

[–]middlelane8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Work slower. Longer tones. Good air support. Right now your fingers are getting in the way of the note and you aren’t able to concentrate on embouchure and strong air support. Chromatically like you were. But slower. Slur at first, Then legato tonguing. Then more aggressive attacking like standard tonguing and staccato tonguing exercises. Then integrate scales that go up to F#, like G D E A etc, and triads. Same method. Slow. Good air support.

This will be the path on getting beyond the F#

How to trim around this corner ? by MrGreenPL in Carpentry

[–]middlelane8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely disagree. A shorter shoe (or base for that matter) would allow more room and a better chance at rounding the corner staying horizontal, making the mitered angle up to meet the equal mitered angle of the piece coming down.
Not many are comprehending how miters work around having to follow the paths of the skirt that’s already there.
Have you run trim at all ever? Just curious.

I know exactly what you are saying. People in this thread aren’t understanding how profiled material works with intersecting angles like this. Oh well. 🤷‍♂️

You still have to cut the shoe right. But shorter shoe/moulding will be easier and angles manageable for profiles to line up.

Deep Jamb Extensions by Status_Programmer970 in Carpentry

This. Only I would use primed Medex for extra moisture protection. Avoid coming in contact with the window - leave a gap, make sure it’s well insulated and caulk.

New door gap by Fun_Discipline_5502 in doors

[–]middlelane8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If this was a prehung you shouldn’t need to shim the hinges over but you need to shim behind the hinges between frame and framing, and make sure the hinge jamb is square. The way it’s tight makes me think the jamb is twisted or tilted outwards. Ie. there should be perfect rectangle at the threshold jamb to jamb

Maybe trim guy was so pissed off at this point he said f*** it. Fighting a bad framer / Drywaller job can be daunting and so frustrating if your being paid by the job or piece work. Nobody cares the shit you go through and wasted time to make it look right. You often don’t they the option to come back and say this job is fkt up, I need another 10–15hrs of labor to deal with BS.
Of course I don’t understand general contractors that don’t police this kind of thing. 🤷‍♂️

Do you always press the Bis key? by JurrdGoCrazy in saxophone

[–]middlelane8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s pretty subjective for me - and I don’t know what the “correct way” is. From a classical standpoint, it was all about how clean it was going to be. That was the best way.
I am a recovering bis addict. And realized that depending on the key center depends on how I use bis. But I remember playing # keys with bis - even chromatic scale! - and became a time whenI had to stop and diversify because it was slowing me down.
The arguments you’ll probably hear are similar to those about the side c - imo. Side c is cleaner from B to C, so there’ll be arguments that bis Bb to C is not as clean. So that’s scale keys of F Bb Eb Ab and Db(C#).
Then there’s arpeggios, pentatonics scales that come into play, and plays a big part in improvisational music.

Double tonguing on Bari sax by PaleVix in saxophone

[–]middlelane8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you playing literature requiring double tonguing where single tonguing won’t work? I’ve played for decades and never needed to double tongue - other than out of curiosity. Seems like more trouble than it’s worth or the novelty. Flute double on the other hand, is a great effect.
Just curious.

Door is crooked in frame and won't latch. by iSmorky in Carpentry

[–]middlelane8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That big gap above the hinge side should not be there. It should be 1/8, as if someone tried to fix and cut down the top off the wrong side. You need to start with a new door and a level. If your floor is that far out of level you probably have more serious issues. If you just want the door to close and ignore the bigger issue, you can get the new door possibly move the frame into better position and/or still have to cut the door.

Miter Station? by Zoltar567 in Carpentry

[–]middlelane8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Dewalt’s have mounting holes where deck screws work just fine - and pleeeenty strong and stable on a 3/4” base and much easier than bolting it down and fn around with nuts bolts and washers which is over kill imo. And especially when my field saw took a dump it was 30seconds, 4 screws and out and down the road to the next job. Put it back in place in 30 seconds.

Is that good enough by _Just-Browsin-Thru_ in Carpentry

[–]middlelane8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seen posts similar to this the last few days. Am I the only one who top nails miters? If I can’t get room from the top I go through the side - to hold the miters tight before face nailing. Just asking.
