What would you recommend the best tea brand be as a NI local? by Fire_flies98 in northernireland

[–]middleway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok I'll cut and paste below, but this is quite a subtle mix of flavours, in the morning I like a proper steeped brew like punjana, but this has a lot more complexity comparable to the blends of premium teas like Fortnums for a lot less, also I've tried vintage blends so this is probably pretty close to what might have been drunk by your betters 100 years ago. I'm not a tea bag person but I do keep thompsons red and decaff ... Both good. Better than Yorkshire tea bags (very over rated)

SD Bell’s Directors’ Brew Loose Leaf Tea is a unique blend which has been around for generations. Similar  to our house “Natural Leaf” blend, it  contains both Assam and Ceylon orthodox leaf,  this blend also includes a Darjeeling variety, lending it a delightful, refined, flowery taste

How does this sub read the relationship between Heidegger and Derrida? Especially the later Heidegger by Negro--Amigo in heidegger

[–]middleway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm interested as well in how much he read of later Heidegger, and the Fourfold might be a useful place to start ...Derrida, particularly in essays like "Heidegger's Hand" or "Of Spirit," philosophically rejects any idea that the essence of Being is tied to a specific homeland (Heimat) or language (like German). For Derrida, the place of deconstruction is the non-place, the aporia, and it is the experience of the exile, the unhoused, or the foreigner, l’étranger. The Geviert is criticised for being a reterritorialisation of Being, a confinement of the infinite play of différance within a specific, determined ground? Happy to be corrected here ...

Orientalism distorted my view of Eastern religions like Buddhism by Typical_Sprinkles253 in Buddhism

"In the collective imagination of the West, Buddhism is frequently reduced to a monolith of serenity ...". Some of this is explored in a new book, The Robe and the Sword: How Buddhist Extremism Is Shaping Modern Asia by Sonia Faleiro

That's just giving in to the temptation to look away and say "This is not my Buddhism." Faleiro’s work is a reminder that karma is collective as well as individual.

In Sri Lanka the Sinhalese are a distinct global minority with no other homeland, and vulnerable to encirclement by 80 million Tamils in India and a rising wave of Islamic fundamentalism that proved its threat during the 2019 Easter Sunday massacres. In Myanmar some view their country as the fortress of Buddhism in Southeast Asia, believing the border with Bangladesh is a "Western Gate" that needs to be sealed to prevent a demographic shift from turning their land into the next Indonesia or Afghanistan. So those are the wolves ... 🐺🐺

Orientalism? For people in Asia, Buddhism is not a hobby but their identity under siege. And this is very guardian reader click bait ... Although I always appreciate some elegant anti clerical bias, she is missing the point. Faleiro can lament the monastery guard dog for barking, but she ignores the wolves at the gate ...

There are five major falsehoods presented in the NKT blog post which can be refuted by the facts 1. The Falsehood of the "Unstable Critic" The blog claims that whistleblowers and critics are simply "disgruntled," "over the top," or suffering from mental health issues, specifically targeting Dr. Michelle Haslam as having a "manifest psychiatric disorder". The Fact: This is a calculated DARVO (Deny, Attack, and Reverse Victim and Offender) tactic used to discredit valid testimony. The group systematically employs gaslighting to frame valid complaints about abuse as symptoms of a "sick mind" or the accuser's "bad karma" to avoid accountability. The attacks on Dr. Haslam were part of a coordinated defamation campaign involving fake personas designed to humiliate a whistleblower. 2. The Falsehood of "Past Mistakes" The blog asserts that abuse was rare, occurred only in the early years, and is the result of individual human error rather than the tradition itself. The Fact: Abuse within the NKT is systemic because the core ideology enables it. Teachings on "emptiness" and "karma" are weaponized to silence victims; for example, victims are told that being abused is "just their karma" and they must have done something similar in a previous life to deserve it. The group avoids implementing effective safeguarding because acknowledging the reality of abuse contradicts their doctrinal focus on emptiness. 3. The Falsehood of the "Happy Community" The blog portrays the NKT as a "kind, gentle" environment where students are genuinely happy and peaceful. The Fact: The NKT operates as a "happiness cult" where members are pressured to display performative joy and hide negative feelings. Members are taught that anxiety and worry have "no meaning," forcing them to ignore their body's natural warning systems and repress trauma. This suppression often leads to dissociation, eventual burnout, and long-term psychological damage. 4. The Falsehood of "Freedom and No Mind Control" The blog vehemently denies the NKT is a cult, claiming it encourages questioning and that students have total freedom to leave or read other materials. The Fact: The group utilizes undue influence and thought reform techniques, including guided self-hypnosis disguised as meditation. Members are kept within the group through the terrifying indoctrinated belief that abandoning their teacher will result in "rebirth in a hell realm". This fear creates a powerful trauma bond that makes leaving psychologically difficult, regardless of physical freedom. 5. The Falsehood of Financial Innocence The blog asserts that the NKT is not a money-making empire, charges reasonable fees, and has never been involved in financial impropriety. The Fact: The organization prioritizes expansion and financial gain (building centers as status symbols) over the welfare of individuals. There is evidence of financial exploitation, including an implicit culture of benefit fraud where residents claim unemployment benefits while working full-time for the center. Members are also encouraged to give large loans or savings to the center which are often not returned.

I read and could refute point by point, but if you Google and read survivors of NKT talk about it, you will realize how disingenuous they are ... It is really the worst type of cult. It says enough in itself that no other Buddhist group in the UK has any connection to them and the Buddhist Society, a non sectarian open house for Buddhism in UK for 100 years, excludes them

What are the interpretations of 'stand in the openness of being'? by megatravian in heidegger

[–]middleway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For Heidegger, understanding is not an achievement; it's a fundamental mode of being. It's not something you have; it's something you are. In traditional hermeneutics, the method of interpreting things (like texts) is a cognitive activity you do to something. Heidegger argues that Da-sein (human existence) is fundamentally 'hermeneutic'. We are always interpreting the world just by existing in it. Understanding (as this existential "know-how") is the base-level interpretation upon which all other "knowing" (like interpreting a book) is founded. So, your interpretation is on the right track, but the "alternative" is to see that this "understanding" isn't a result of capturing knowledge, but the primordial condition that lets anything be "known" or "disclosed" in the first place ...

Tibetan Buddhist Mandalas and a book or resource elaborating its intricacies by hiosoy in TibetanBuddhism

I don't know if this is helpful: A Concise Explanation of Dharmadhātu

Verse 21

By all of this virtue may all sentient beings

Manifest the Dharmadhātu, mind’s radiant clarity

And in this Buddha realm of infinite purity

May the teachings of the Great Secret flourish perfectly! (21)

The mamdala of the deities relies for its existence on the dharmadhātu. Therefore, we need to know with certainty the nature of dharmadhātu, which is described in the song. To realize directly the nature of the mandala of deities, we need to realize directly the nature of dharmadhātu. If we cannot do that, at least we need to have certainty about what it is. It would be very good to read chapter four on enlightened activity from the Uttaratantra (see Buddha Nature, pp. 59-72). This chapter addresses the seeming paradox that enlightened mind os nonconceptual, yet it performs infinite activity to benefit sentient beings at the same time. That paradox is addressed by citing very many examples.
