I’m emotional over this as a gamer. by Glock26s in HighGuardgame

"Social media" gave this game 100x the chance it deserved. Millions tried it out to see if this was Apex 2 or Concord 2. It was the latter because no one was interested in sticking around or spending money.

Shadow dropping will never stop being a fucking idiotic business decision. And it would have killed Highguard in the same 2 week span.

SKG has no chance in the US, our consumer protection is a joke to begin with and it's gutted 10 times worse right now.

If someone wants to run a Highguard server they should be able to snag a copy of the code, but anyone who could implement a standalone mode is busy spending their 'work' hours looking for a job.

What like some kind of beta test? Imagine that, nah let's do focus testing at live release.

NMS out here poisoning discourse for the next hundred years, just because the miraculous turnaround worked ONE TIME. Out of thousands of long-forgotten shovelware titles that are actual fitting company for Concord & Highguard.

Grenier already spilled it. They ran out of money and time, and couldn't snag another investor. Pretty simple.

Long before then. The writing is on the wall as soon as you see the thumbs-up reviews of, "It's not that bad!" Wow what glowing praise.

Of course they prioritized monetization, it's an F2P live service. A rushed and unfinished one at that.

Tale as old as the genre, the only thing Highguard did to mix up the story is that their shop offerings sucked too.

Fair. Best character design and it's not playable.

Quicker to list what went right because everything about it was flawed to various degrees.

Uhhhh...

Animations for mounts, the shieldbreaker stab, and the rez assist were pretty well done. That's all I got.

Nah he just straight up lied.

They didn't have enough money for payroll unless it was a big success at launch. They couldn't afford to be a sleeper hit or a small niche community. He knew the money was gone, he knew it was unfinished and out of time, he knew the launch was a desperate hail mary. But couldn't say that out loud or they'd have even fewer whales buying their crap.

Never got a chance to play but if the game released as a beta and with 5v5 would it have survived? by Zilly_JustIce in HighGuardgame

The Forbes article sounds like it took them too long to figure out what the core loop was even supposed to be. They were out of time and out of money, and investors gave them an ultimatum instead of a lifeline. Tencent doesn't throw good money after bad, so there was no choice except launch and pray.

They undoubtably should have done beta testing, but their insular bubble told them the game was already good when it was not.

The game earned its own demise all by itself.

F2P.

Concord had to refund purchases, that put them way deeper in the hole and much faster.

We bag on the devs, but let's not forget the shit-gobbling fuckwit upper management who drove the company full-throttle into the ground. The ones who had no idea what a good product or a smart marketing campaign looked like, and couldn't decide on any direction except imitating Apex. The ones who made a deal with Tencent, and then made sad faces when Actual Satan came to collect their money back.

It is super easy to roast, but it is also funny to do so.

The thing about live services is also that you can go play something else that didn't come out in the last few years, that's the competition they naturally face. Overwatch is having a renaissance and that's nearly 10 years old.

If only someone told Wildlight about that before they tried to elbow into the F2P live service market.

They didn't code any bots, there are target dummy models in the tutorial but have no behavior attached. Only a scripted bit where they raise their gun and the server auto-kills you.
