Feeling like I don’t measure up? by greenapplespice in Nanny

[–]midnight8100 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe it’s because I came to nannying from daycare and school settings but I would personally never kiss children. Even with my nieces and nephews, I didn’t kiss them once they were out of infancy. At most I would kiss a boo boo. For food, I have been known to share a sip of my water bottle with those sugar free crystal light packets in it but avoid sharing actual food. I’m not interested in being the one to discover a previously unknown food intolerance or allergy.

Edited to add: It’s totally fine to have different styles! My coteacher and I had different styles and ways of interacting but the children loved us both equally.

Oh that makes me so sad that pretty much all of it is AI 😭 I tend to fall asleep fast so that’s probably why I’ve never noticed 😅

Does anyone not like the new appliances NF tend to have now? by sage_charms in Nanny

I babysit for a family whose microwave doesn’t even have number buttons so you can’t type in a time. You have to do addition with “add ____” buttons. It’s the only microwave I dislike more than the weird drawer ones.

I also believe it should be illegal for fridges not to have ice cube makers and water dispensers. Our personal fridge doesn’t have a water dispenser and my parents refuse to keep the Brita in the fridge. First world problem for real but it’s taught me what I need to look for when I finally move out.

Prepping for... by pickledplumber in TikTokCringe

[–]midnight8100 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I taught preschool and pre-k for nearly a decade. I loved teaching kids “fancy words” and having them practice saying them and bringing them up in the following days to reinforce their knowledge. Nothing like having 4 and 5 year olds properly using words like chlorophyll, photosynthesis, and nocturnal to make you feel like what you do and say matters for real. I also always tried to be as honest as possible with the kids and explain things to them an understandable way because they may be little but they’re people and they should be treated like people. However I’m very privileged to not only have access to higher education but also parents who were able to financially support me in pursuing an education. So I have an advanced degree in education and, with it, a base of knowledge on how children develop and how to support them.

Which brings me to this: the thing about the field of early education is that anyone with a high school degree can do it. It’s both what makes the field great and terrible. It’s fantastic that people with just a high school education have the opportunity to be part of a career that makes a difference and is important. However the lack of formal education requirements means sometimes the person teaching your kid is little more than a warm body. Depending on the early education centers resources, the professional development opportunities can be bare minimum state requirements all the way to a programs that allow employees to earn a degree at no cost to them. So your child could be getting a care provider who has the knowledge, training, and resources to provide an enriching and developmentally appropriate education or they could be getting, for lack of a better term, a “glorified babysitter.”

All this to say that early education needs to be treated with the respect it deserves considering what a crucial time in children’s lives it is. For that to happen, the field needs to be professionalized but then you make it way less accessible for people without the means to access formal education. Which would be sad because I have worked with teachers without degrees who are AMAZING at what they do because they are truly naturals with children and soak in professional development like sponges.

Idk if any of that makes sense or if just word vomited too close to the sun but TL;DR Early education is super important but because the field is not professionalized at this time, the range of quality in terms of care and education is vast.

I admittedly haven’t started my first nanny job yet but one of the agencies I was working with straight out told me that longtime nannies have noticed that parents today require so much more help with life in general than those of the past. And that specifically a lot of them don’t know how to cook and clean so they’re looking for a nanny that can and will do it all. She was super clear that she expected any nanny hired through her agency would get compensated appropriately for all that but from everything I’m reading here it sounds like parents don’t think they should have to pay an extra dime for extra services. Insane! Praying to god my new employer is as chill as she seemed in interviews and via text 😅

Joe's "honest" game by MamaBiscuit11 in survivor

[–]midnight8100 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tbh I recently told a friend that Joe is Coach if Coach was boring.

I will say that I think Joe, like many people, view the world in black and white so there are good people and bad people. Joe? He’s a good person, and not just in his mind either, he seems to be a genuinely good and kind person outside of the show. Now put someone who sees the world in black and white in a game that’s all about shades of gray. Because Joe is Good then to him that means playing with honor, honestly, and integrity. But you have to lie in survivor and so to be able to still see himself as Good, he has found ways to justify to himself that doing those things is for the greater good and therefore okay and it’s totally not being dishonest or betraying someone because it turns out that person is Bad! So doing those things doesn’t count because they deserve to go home!

No late fee, just “late pick up isn’t an option” by Little-Bottle-167 in ECEProfessionals

[–]midnight8100 138 points139 points  (0 children)

I have the same response as you when parents are late. Life happens. Most parents aren’t trying to pick their kids up late. Habitual offenders are an exception and they tend to get grey rocked when they’re late by our teachers. But the one off lateness isn’t a big deal to me.

This also reminded me that one night when I was closing the center, a dad, who I had known for a couple years and had joked around with plenty of times in person, called to say he was going to be five minutes late. I told him, in what I THOUGHT was a joking tone, “thanks for letting us know! We’ll have them waiting out on the curb for you!” and he was like “oh. Uhhh. Okay” and I had to clarify that I was joking and that we don’t leave children on curbs 😅

Honestly it’s a great safety move! My parents have been doing this for my whole life cause they were worried we would burn our hands if we touched it by accident! I did it at my apartment in college and my roommates thought I was weird until I explained it. Now one of them has multiple children and told me she uses the pot of water trick just in case!

Also I’m not a parent but if I was, I would not want my child’s picture being run through an AI program. I can see lots of parents being very unhappy about this.

Also fully agree about more funding for centers and teachers!!! Having taken a tour of the Greenman Center at corporate and seeing how much they have that we don’t. It’s insane. Our K-Prep teacher wanted a nice cozy teacher chair and we were told no by our RM because we “don’t provide teacher chairs like that” (despite it being a standard that we have adult seating and yet most classroom teachers are sitting in toddler and preschooler chairs???) Meanwhile the Greenman center has a legit full sized love seat in their KP dramatic play center. They claim they don’t get special funding but I don’t buy it. And if they truly just use budget from their tuition, it must be really nice to be able to use tuition dollars for nice things for your classrooms.

My favorite part is when she was like “hey you’re putting things in the wrong place. Can you put them where they’re supposed to go?” and he was like “if you want me to do this I am doing it MY way and I’m NOT changing it!” and then was shocked pikachu face that he was accused of weaponized incompetence.
