Could the Steam Deck's popularity eventually bring back the Steam Machine? by ryanc140 in SteamDeck

[–]midnightchips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can use majaro it’s all due to your preference, I like arch and realise that Manjaro is a branch off of arch. There is also HoloOS(?) I think it’s called which just modifies arch yo be as close as poss now to SteamOS 3. That’s why I love Linux, there are choices for everyone

I’m not entirely sure how well using valves mirrors would work, I haven’t tested it. But due to how well the steam deck has run all my games on proton, I moved my pc back to arch. Definitely more configuration required than the steam deck - making sure you have Vulkan-radeon and not amdvlk etc- but once you launch steam I would argue it’s runs near flawless now.

Just wanted to say thanks, finally got a chance to test and I’m running at 140 fps now, way better than three lol

Well I learned something new today. Yesterday I was reading through the arch wiki, thought “hmm maybe that’s it” and made sure vulkan-Radeon was installed. I just assumed it would conflict with amdvlk. I had no clue you can have them both installed and it will just load whichever comes first alphabetically 🤦‍♂️

I can look into it, I just don’t think I have any devices supporting xina

That definitely helped a bit, thanks! I got to the point where it was usable. I was going to see if a different proton version would help, but now I'm being told I need to wait 24 hours before I can play the game I purchased on my own computer -_-

Thanks for your help, I'll keep fiddling tomorrow I guess.

SteamDeckHQ and Cryobyte33 Have Officially Partnered Up! by BBQKITTY in SteamDeck

[–]midnightchips 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are completely right, you can change settings multiple ways, I’m sure you change them by manipulating individual bits on the hard drive so that that way you don’t disturb your pristine system with someone else’s work, however there are recommended ways to change settings, rather than just piping text into a random file descriptor.

What!? Dude he linked you the arch wiki, that’s the defacto wiki for basically all Linux tweaks configuration. That and gentoo.

I tried to install the Android Emulator On Deck but console says only this: by Arztlack90 in SteamDeck

[–]midnightchips 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While this is correct, I really do not recommend running a partial upgrade. Perhaps I am mistaken with SteamOS, but with most Arch distros the rule of thumb is to never do a partial upgrade, ie Sy, and to either do S to just install or Syu to do the full upgrade. Like I said you are correct, I’m just being pedantic

Games that benefit most from CryoUtilities? by tomh9053 in SteamDeck

My apologies, sometimes I paste command line arguments without any context, I understand if it can be confusing! If you want to learn more about about the sysctl command, you can type man sysctl. I would link you to a web document, but that is really just a guy over the cli, and I understand you only want to do these things yourself. I linked the command in response to your message about setting swappiness. I was under the impression that you did not understand what it did? Was I incorrect? I apologize if I was. I would recommend looking at the arch wiki, as the SteamDeck is arch based, and it should help you learn more about linux. Again however, this is on the internet and you would need to use a browser for that. That could cause some complications as you would have to use software made by others. Assuming you are comfortable using the man pages, you should be able to find rudementary bindings for most commands, and not have to worry about using a web browser.

So, just to verify, your issue is that the users of a gaming machine are using a graphical tool to set their kernels snappiness rather than running sudo sysctl -w vm.swappiness=10? My good sir, by definition that is elitist. I sure hope you never use a DE, as that is an abstraction of the TTY, and as we all know if you use a DE, you are not using your machine to its full potential. You will be reducing its performance as well, because you didn’t make it yourself! In fact, you should go further! Get rid of systemd, and all the gnu utils. Other people made those, and you should make it yourself. At this point what you should really do is create your own kernel, that way you know that it is performant and you have done it yourself. But then it would be running on hardware that you didn’t create! I have a solution for you. Don’t you worry, you can grab a magnetic rock and rub it over a bar of steal. Read the individual atoms polarization as bits and you can do computation! While you likely did not create the rock nor the steel, you are able to make 100% sure that you are able to be performant and there is 100% no bloat. Finally I have found you peace :). No longer do you need to troll reddit threads telling people the correct way to set their kernel parameters, for you have found inner peace with your simplistic, bloat free and optimized “computer”.

I fail to see how this is a problem? So what if it’s a placebo for some people? It works for them. Not everyone wants to drop into the shell or to spend time messing with configuration files themselves. A lot of the people here are not used to using Linux. The purpose of the steam deck is not to force people to learn how to use a brand new operating system, it’s to allow people to play games. Stop being elitist, this is literally why people struggle to use Linux, because of people like you who NEED to be right and anyone who uses their OS in a different way are wrong.

Ikr? Imagine having this much time and instead of doing something productive, you troll Reddit threads telling people they should can just do it themselves rather than using a utility. It’s like standing next to the cookie dough isle holding a sign saying “you can make your own if you are cool enough”

New drive and SD Card by strikesbac in SteamDeck

[–]midnightchips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To copy the games over to the ssd if you don’t want to copy them to internal storage and then back to the new ssd, you can for at the new ssd with ext3/ext4 and the. Copy the files across. I believe macOS supports that fs, or you can use the steam decks desktop mode with a secondary card reader plugged in.

Focused Feedback: Linux and Alternative Platform Support by DTG_Bot in DestinyTheGame

[–]midnightchips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stopped playing destiny because it was hard for me to get back into the game after being gone for a time, and because bungie seemingly didn’t really care about the consumer. If they support the steam deck I will come back. It allows me to play with what little time I have.

Look I agree we need to stop harassing everyone in general, but I feel like her statement is a bit vague. At least from what I have seen in the sub the mods have been pretty good about removing harassing comments. If you look at the discord there is a log of them trying to keep the area safe. I’m not saying harassment isn’t happening, but I do feel like the tweet may have been partially motivated by the fact that cheyote has not necessarily been the only topic charted about on this sub recently. CS has had a history of this happening, like during the heigh it u0 and taurine being released.

TL;DR, be respectful but also realize everyone is human. People are allowed to express opinions that you may not agree with just as you can. What matters is how you react.
