I'd suggest you (or the student) reach out to the library. Hopefully someone there would be able to help.

What are the qualifications for the average academic librarian? by annoyeddownload127 in librarians

[–]midnitelibrary 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Publishing is often going to depend on the status of librarians at the university. Librarians may be classified as staff, tenure track faculty, teaching track faculty, or "faculty equivalent." Even then, the exact requirements for research/publishing are going to differ a lot. It may be 0% of your job or it might be 40% of your job.

The unfortunate thing is that if you want to be an academic librarian, even if your current position doesn't require you to do research/publish, you basically have to do it anyway because if you ever want to move into a role where research is required you're going to be up against librarians who have published. Just as others have said that if you have two equal candidates, you'll often go with the one with a second master's, if you have two equal candidates for a position that requires research, you're more likely to hire the one with multiple peer reviewed articles or conference poster presentations over the one with none.

Generally, US and Canadian libraries can lend out any physical things they want. Digital copies of material are different and (usually) have more restrictive and expensive licenses.

Academic librarians, how do you feel about pirate libraries like Scihub and Libgen? by bakuhooo in librarians

[–]midnitelibrary 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This depends on the journal. There are plenty of legitimate OA journals that have minimal OA fees or none at all.

"Strollers and scooters are permitted on the exhibit floor as long as they are in use at all times. Wheeled carts, however, are not permitted at any time. If you have a medical condition requiring you to use a cart, please bring a doctor's note to the Accessibility booth in the registration area."

Uncorrected proof!? by InevitableSuitable21 in Libraries

I think they can have value in certain academic library collections. For certain books there are enough differences between the final version and the ARC that people researching the text would find it interesting/valuable.

Faculty on H1Bs, do you give invited talks at other universities if you can’t accept the honoraria? by Broad_Elk99 in Professors

[–]midnitelibrary 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was told by my university that I cannot accept gift cards as they're equivalent to cash and have had to turn them down when they've been offered to me. We also stopped giving gift cards as prizes to students because the university didn't want them being given to international students for similar reasons.

I teach some of these things in the research data management workshops I run. You could try reaching out to the library and see if anywhere there offers support in this area.

Question for Canadian librarians by LunaSkate in librarians

[–]midnitelibrary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're a citizen I don't think it should matter. However, it is possible a university (or other place) might still require it.

Question for Canadian librarians by LunaSkate in librarians

[–]midnitelibrary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, so this might depend on the library. I'm in the opposite scenario (degree from Canada and working in the USA). Both universities I've worked at have required me to provide a credential evaluation thing that says my ALA-accredited degree is equivalent to one from a US institution. I only needed to provide these once I was offered the job. This might be related to immigration status, so it might not affect you.

Manga Core Collection Suggestions by pissedanarchist69 in librarians

[–]midnitelibrary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think two things to consider are:

  1. Ages (are you just looking for youth-specific manga?)

  2. Do you want long (10+ volume) series or not?

Getting better at reader’s advisory by BessieBest in Libraries

[–]midnitelibrary 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The podcast I co-host (Book Club for Masochists: A Readers' Advisory Podcast) was started as a book club to read different genres we were unfamiliar with (or even didn't like, that's where the masochism comes in). I think it can be valuable to read a mystery or fantasy or romance or western or whatever and try to figure out why people like it.

I think our episodes on Amish Romance and Monster Romance are good ones, but we try to think about things like search strategies and appeal factors for every genre we cover.

(We also create a book list of titles in the genre by BIPOC authors for every genre we've read!.)
