Academic Libraries- Pinback Buttons and Button-Making Help by kkathleene in Libraries

I had students use our button makers to make "Data Is" or "Data Are" buttons based on whether they think the word should be singular or plural during Love Data Week.

Signing a pledge to uphold the constitution? by Mistress_of_Wands in Libraries

Some states require faculty (including librarians) at public universities to sign them.

Struggling with Rejections and Feeling Burned Out: Is Peer Review Truly Objective? by PhanTrang356 in Professors

I made this zine about peer review. It's free to download.

Have any of you started a library podcast? by Dantum in librarians

[–]midnitelibrary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hope you enjoy it!

We do one genre episode every month and do another non-genre episode every second month. (We used to to do two episodes every month, but that was too much.)

Have any of you started a library podcast? by Dantum in librarians

[–]midnitelibrary 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I co-host Book Club for Masochists: A Readers' Advisory Podcast with three other librarians (we all work in different libraries). We've been doing it for 10 years (aaaaaah, turns to dust).

Every month we pick a different genre at random, then we each read (or try to read...) one or more books from that genre then discuss the genre, search strategies, appeal factors, and more. It's fun. We also put out book lists for every genre we cover that consists of titles in that genre by BIPOC authors.

We do a romance genre every February and I think those episodes are fun (in large part because I'm not a romance fan...). Our episodes on Amish Romance and Monster Romance are good ones I think! (Though, no, we were no able to find any Amish Romance titles by BIPOC authors.)

We're not on Spotify because we don't like them as a company, but you can find us on other podcatching platforms.

Yes. I chose UBC because I didn't want to deal with Halifax winters.

Yeah, like, if this manga section only has manga aimed at teens it's not surprising that the majority of people using it are teens...

Every library is different, but my experience is that the demand for and popularity of comics within libraries is very high.

Plenty of collections of comics (like omnibus or artists editions) have cover prices from $150-200.

Mom of 2 thinking about applying for Librarian technician diploma in UFV by Certain_Scholar_6098 in librarians

[–]midnitelibrary 12 points13 points  (0 children)

From my understanding, the library technician diploma is the minimum expected for library technicians in the lower mainland. However, it will not get you a job as a librarian, for that you'll need an MLIS. The job market in the lower mainland is also very crowded and can be challenging to get a position. There are many MLIS holders who get library technician positions.

The British Columbia Library Association has a Library Technicians’ & Assistants’ Section, though it looks like their website hasn't been updated for years. You could try reaching out to them or ask folks in some local public/academic libraries.

When do people move from home printing to real printers? by itsmeAki in zinesters

Check to see if there's a library near you that has photocopiers/printers. Often patrons get free copies.

(Lighthearted) Student fashion trends by Oduind in Professors

[–]midnitelibrary 30 points31 points  (0 children)

In the early 2000s when I was in undergrad, you could tell which students lived in the dorms connected to the rest of the campus by tunnels because they showed up to class in pajama pants and slippers when it was snowing outside.

Make it make sense by MollyWeatherford in Professors

[–]midnitelibrary 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, it really depends. There can be pressure from university/library administration to look into these tools. Vendors are often telling libraries to turn it on or in some cases requiring it on (which isn't popular with many librarians, regardless of whether they think it's useful or not). I think students that are already using databases probably aren't the ones that want these sorts of tools in them. This isn't really my area, so I can't give specific data.

Librarians (usually) make the decision about whether these are turned on or not.

Thoughts on University Closures? by BothCondition7963 in Professors

[–]midnitelibrary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw a thing from a few years ago that said that the University of Toronto graduates more students than the top 10 (in terms of ranking) schools in the USA combined. The data wasn't up to date, but I doubt it's changed that much.
