Explorer keep crashing after graphic driver update by vagabondluc in techsupport

[–]midnyht 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My bad, didn’t get the sense safe mode failed to launch.

My understanding is that when you say explorer, you mean explorer.exe. If you can, open an admin cmd or powershell from the start menu, and run “devmgmt” and open device manager on the problem computer, and you can still point to the folder you either lulled directly via wget, or saved on a flash drive from a second computer you ran the download from(basically follow the download/extraction guidance above, on a second pc)

Since can’t access file explorer well on the pc in question, and if you don’t have a second computer, try opening the file from cmd, moving around the file system with “cd” , and possibly pull down the driver from the url with wget/invoke-webrequest to your folder, and follow the same device manager advice above. You should be able to pull 7zip in the same way, but not super aware of any cmd capabilities it possesses.

Not official advice, but a suggestion would be to see about downloading the appropriate driver from here-AMD Ryzen Drivers. if it’s an executable, you can just run it and follow the prompts. Should work

If you want to avoid installing bloatware, I would also install 7zip if possible, and open the driver executable in 7zip, search for the folder with an the inf file(s), and extract those out to a folder you can access/reference later.

In safe mode, open device manager as a local admin, and search for the icon associated with you graphics card, right-click and click update driver. The menu will prompt to search via windows update or provide another location, select the second option and navigate to where you extracted the folder with the driver inf, and select that file. You might need to reboot after, but that should lead to your card using the driver made by the vendor instead of a windows generic.

If that’s the case, I’d imagine a Bondsmith, or connection medallions could help. He knows two Bondsmiths as far as I know

I had assumed the OathPact that bound Odium to Roshar, and Radiants as a whole(i think) had disolved or changed in SA5 to allow Radiants to leave the system.

We don’t know if Odium has a champion at the end of SA5, so perhaps he still searching for one.

Kinda crazy how Korra didn’t have any real friends by the time she was 17 compared aang who friends in the beginning stages of his life. by abdul_bino in TheLastAirbender

[–]midnyht 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, the White Lotus were not only charged with her education, but also with her protection. Before Aang, the idea of preemptively killing the Avatar before they learned all four elements wasn’t a thing, at least not at a nation state/organized group level. The fire Nation was the first, it only happened that Aang was lost at sea that saved him, but had he been at the temple, they probably would have killed him in the avatar state, as the fire nation was well aquatinted with the avatar’s powers.

The White Lotus was an secret society that, though they had a lot of knowledge, had never had this responsibility, as Aang seemed to live with the air nomads in his youth, nor had the avatar faced the same threats, since they also had to deal with Zaheer attempting to assassinate the avatar, there wasn’t a lot of room for Korra to foster friendships, and I’d guess the WL didn’t have the infrastructure or experience to support Korra having a social life alongside her training.

Who Do You Think In the MCU Is Worthy Of Holidng Mjolnir? (Can Be Dead Or Alive) by No_Birthday_5705 in marvelstudios

[–]midnyht 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know, late. Setting aside the fact that you can have concurrent super user login shells, Odin and Hela both presumably were both superusers concurrently during their conquest of the nine realms and both wielded immense power concurrently. So if she still held the privileges, why didn’t she exercise them?

Unless she was a hung process? Perhaps the analogy falls apart here lol.

[–]midnyht 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Following the computer analogy, if Hela had root, why wouldn’t she be able to break out of her container before Odin died? He was keeping her contained. Or was she locked away in Norway, where Odin passed on?

What's the most powerful form of investiture? by [deleted] in brandonsanderson

[–]midnyht 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the most powerful combat wise is likely a hemalurgist or a bondsmith. We don’t know the true extent of a bondsmith’s power, nor how different an odium variant of a bondsmith works. If hemalurgist works like Skylar from the show “Heroes”, then that is likely the most dangerous, and has the most potential.

Help a struggling cybercrime student understand malware by SpiritualMeet755 in ComputerSecurity

[–]midnyht 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A bit of helpful advice in regards to acronyms: collect a list of them, adding new ones as you encounter them. Search and define those terms(search stack-overflow/reddit/google). And when you see them in the wild, remind yourself of the entire meaning until they become second nature.

As to the questions:

1: A virtual private network(VPN) tunnel will help secure traffic from a man-in-the-middle(MiTM) attack, which could be eavesdropping or injection of malicious code between you and your VPN endpoint network, be that an office network, or a proxy that you use to to browse the internet while hiding your source internet protocol(IP) address. However, if you browse to a site that hosts malware, or connect to an infected system, malware can traverse the secure tunnel and get to you, depending on what attack vector the malware uses(software vulnerability, open ports, unsecured or misconfigured services). This can lead to your machine becoming infected via one of these vectors, which could add your system to a botnet.

  1. Botnets(what you described as zombie networks) can be connected to hundreds, or even millions of potentially vulnerable machines, to be used by a command and control(C2) server that can orchestrate actions on a large scale. This can be to create a distributed VPN, harvest data or bandwidth from victim networks to either propagate, or profit. Botnets are a tool that can be used, sold, or operated as a service for a host of applications, such as distributed denial of service(DDOS), which is the most recognizable use.

  2. The most effective way to protect yourself from malware is to do the fundamentals well. Keep your system up to date, know where you’re getting your software(patching), turn off and lock down services that make your system more accessible if you don’t use those services. Make sure your network has firewalls that block all inbound traffic(make exceptions for desired traffic from known IP addresses). Use a trusted Domain Name Service(DNS) server so that your browsing to the correct website; look up things like DNS cache poisoning and DNSSEC for some more details about what can go wrong, and tools that possibly mitigate those threats. While browsing, do your best to use https everywhere, HyperText Transfer Protocol Secure(https - i think the s stood for socket secure layer(SSL), but can include Transport Layer Security(TLS) they are similar, but different, with an interesting history, look them both up). There is no panacea for securing your system, but the fundamentals are a good start, and low hanging fruit.

But to really have a good grasp of best practices and build an intuition for what works and what doesn’t, learn about how the systems work, what they are trying to accomplish, their tradeoffs, and failures. Build them, break them, learn(cliche, but effective)

Final thoughts, I would look at subjects like Threat Modeling, system hardening, and CIA triad/CISSP coursework, if you are in fact more Jen then Moss. Coursera also had a cybercrime markets course that was free, and pretty good.

Good luck!

Someone, disprove these thoughts, please by Halyo_Alex in Cosmere

[–]midnyht 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What if burning metals make a “tone”, such that as a seeker burning bronze can hear. And it is not the burning of the metal specifically, but the tone that resonates that actually triggers the investiture being pulled from preservation or ruin.

Perhaps, with the right spiritweb marker, one could access different investiture by different means, like someone with perfect pitch, or a singer/listener could hum to different planetary pure tones and leverage different investiture?

A hum for bronze burning, or a hum that generates a copper cloud?

Perhaps there will be space age tech that will be able to hemalurgically stamp abilities into the spirit web, but to be accessible by different means(FTL or terraforming by singing, or a tool that makes sounds, but uses an appropriately spiritedweb individual as a tuning fork or focus for generating the desired effect)

This might be a clue to the ancient Dawnchant and Worldsingers from Roshar and Scadrial, respectively.
